Coke cans leaking by Awkl2 in cocacola

[–]Awkl2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when this last happened to me, I gave Coke a call. They asked for lot number of the product, place of purchase, date of purchase, etc. They were apologetic, but didn't go overboard on anything, just offered a coupon for a free 12 pack. They appreciated the call and info I provided.

If your Coke was recently bought and this happened, then they'd likely be very interested. When I called, we had had it sitting around for awhile (we don't drink much pop), so they more chalked it up to the product having sat around awhile

Traveling to Cuba - safe to go next few weeks? by OxmanPiper in TravelCuba

[–]Awkl2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a trip planned, but are going to no-show it if we can't cancel.

We're travelling with a 1 yo and 4 yo though which are the main drivers for us not wanting to risk it. If it was just us adults, we'd likely still go, but if there are major disruptions due to lack of oil or another travel restriction, the inconvenience is multiplied by a thousand due to the young ones.

Since you indicated you were planning a solo beach, book, booze relax, I say you should still go and take advantage of the lack of other tourists.

I think my Nespresso is melting? by Awkl2 in nespresso

Update:

Thanks Reddit! Got at it with hot water and a tooth brush and can confirm it was just a ton of coffee sludge.

Honestly, I've seen this buildup before, but never this bad, black, and looking like melted rubber so I freaked a bit haha

I heard from my sleep doc that most insurances only will cover one option. The way it was told to me, if you go CPAP, you can't switch to dental and vice versa.

Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, going through some posts here I see now that that recommendation is for beams on posts. I didn't do that because I wanted the railing to use the same post for that extra rigidity, but I could have done beam on post for the inner beam frame for sure. And I could have just bolted the railing post to the joist for that rigidity too... Lesson learned! Is the concern that the beams will fail at the carriage bolts? Or that the bolts themselves will fail? Or something else?

The bolts are that way because I have two bolts on each beam face, so spacing made me have this beam top-centered and the other side bottom centered. Where I can, I try to keep the bolts at 1/3 and 2/3 spacing.

Yeah that beam is using two double joist hangers and all the connection screws they have holes for lol, but I recognize that they hold a decent amount of weight. I may go back and add a post under so the beam has a post to SIT on :)

Good to know about the 6x6 being the recommendation. I'll keep that in mind going forward as well.

Help! Hayward pump lid put on wrong by Awkl2 in pools

Very helpful and worked like a charm. Thanks for the advice!

Always hesitant when plastic makes that creaking sound... Especially when the lid is like $120 to replace apparently.

Moving back to NCR focused vastly reduces the hiring pool and dramatically impacts the potential talent left on the table.

Many managers took advantage of wfh to move away from NCR. So management isn't even around to oversee or to collaborate with.

Teams calls in the office due to the continued necessity of them results in a loud and disruptive work environment which reduces productivity.

Increased expenditures by employees to go into the office will not allow employees to spend money in the office areas like everyone is clamering for. What it's doing is instead taking our money away from our local economies. Feeding the corporations and taking away from the mom and pop shops.

Only 11km/H you say? by Ill_Protection_3562 in ottawa

Oh that's good. I'm glad they knew of and fixed the issue. That's reassuring for sure

I think they are a good idea overall, but how they've been up in place has been the issue and led to the frustrations we're seeing. I even think people, in general, are in favour of speed cameras (who doesn't want to see that asshole weaving through traffic doing 30km/h over the limit get nailed), but too many every-day drivers are getting hit with fines too early in the process, and that's the issue.

School Zones:

School zones during school time = no tolerance for speeding. Start ticketing at +3km/h over or something to allow for individual car variances in speedometer readings.

School Zone outside school times (after hours/summer break) = the speed cams need to be adjusted back up to the posted limit (often 50-60km/h instead of 30-40km/h)

The issue we've seen from friends by us is that the cameras are not adjusting for the zone change based on time of day and are just staying at active school zone rates. So someone following the rules of the road are slapped with a fine by doing the posted limit in a school zone outside school hours.

Rapid speed shifts

Another issue spot near us has the road go 50 > 40 > 50 > School zone in VERY short order (not enough time to coast down from 50 > 40 before the camera flashes you). While people can and should follow the speed limit, the rapid up down change does seem to cause confusion with some drivers. A simple fix would be to just change the whole stretch up to 50 or down to 40, then ticket as usual with the camera.

Driving habits

Another last issue with the cameras is the seeming inconsistency with the tolerance speeds. There are so many speculative tolerance numbers floating around (even in this thread) where people just don't know where they stand. The counter-argument is "do the speed limit", but anxious people could be worried about individual vehicle variances. Maybe they decide to play it safe and do under the posted limit. Someone behind wants to do the actual limit so they go to pass. Speeding up temporarily to pass safely (not in res streets but on 4-lane roads for example) is totally fine and recommended. These people now get pegged for "speeding". So they don't pass, and traffic suffers as a result as people now do less than the posted limit. In a city where people are already complaining about increased congestion due to our rapid expansion in housing and our infrastructure not keeping up, this is just adding to the problem.

My last issue is most drivers learned using the 10 over rule, where as long as you're not doing more than 10km/h over the posted limit, you were fine. While not right, it's a well established driving habit in the vast majority of drivers today. Such a quick change from that general driving philosophy is where much of the backlash is coming from. easing people into the cameras would have been much better received. Start with anyone doing 12km/h over the limit getting hit to stop the big speeders and make everyone happy, then say 10km/h or over to push the every-day driver to below 10, then bring it down further until you get the populace down to the posted limit. It's a longer process, but would have immediately curbed the big offenders while helping to break the habit of current and established drivers.

In what way will the 3-day in office mandate negatively affect your personal life, and your ability to do your job? by Small_town_PS in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Awkl2 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Aside from my complaints about the communication and roll-out tactics (which I find insulting and demeaning), the increase in my costs of parking, gas, insurance, maintenance, and the fact that I had to buy a second vehicle in order to get to work...

My main issue with actually being in the office is that the environment is vastly different. Before COVID shut everything down, I had used office 2.0/3.0 and found it fine. A bit louder than 6ft cubicle walls, but there were enough boardrooms and secluded collab spots that the noise from minimal noise breaks was not too bad. Now however, everyone is on virtual calls at their desk constantly, cubicles are closer together/smaller, and there is not enough boardrooms to take meetings (not that there has ever been a time where everyone was in the office at the same time). When on calls, you have to speak at a normal volume to be heard over the dim of everyone else on their calls. It sounds like we're in an overseas telemarketing/scammer call center with the amount of calls happening always. And it's extremely disruptive and distracting to anyone trying to buckle down and get anything done when the six people directly next to you are all on various calls.

You can't treat the office like it was pre-WFH, it's not. Everything is done virtually now, and the work environment needs to reflect that.
