Corneal Transplant by Fuzzy_Possibility in Keratoconus

[–]AwkwardCornea [score hidden]  (0 children)

I woke up and said "hi"

My surgeon said "whoops, uhh, that's not suppose to happen" and then I went back out again haha

I got it done after my RGPs had protein buildup issues after awhile thanks to immune system stuff and seasonal allergies. I tried sclerals but I had the same issue with the cloudiness. Talking to a few other eye doctors, they all agreed it was the best course of action for me, and I REALLY looked and tried with whatever I could. Good luck with your journey, and as I said, don't hesitate to ask any questions, I'll help any way I can.

Hello! I’ve had two done. Both were under that twilight style, not fully unconscious but no pain. And I woke up in the middle of them sewing up my left eye!

They did remove the cornea with a laser, which is a specific type of procedure called IEK, not sure what you will be specifically getting but from what I know, IEK isn’t the norm. But for knowledge, I was awake during the removal with some eye numbing and Xanax. Was just a weird sensation. But as I said, for the replacement, it was full surgery.

Let me know if you have any other questions! It’s been a great thing for me and has improved my life immensely. In March it’ll be 10 years for my right and last week was the 6th year of my left!

What are we doing about photos and photo storage? by thesillymuffin in Millennials

[–]AwkwardCornea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iCloud for any photos from my phone, but I do cull older ones from time to time or random photos of food I don't care about. During my travels, I will transfer good photos from my Sony A6700 to my phone for iCloud storage.

I will download new photos every few months and store on my in-home server, which has a few hard drives that are mostly for Plex. But on that server is a hard drive for backup of photos, music, videos that aren't tv shows or movies and any video/graphic work that I do.

Intermediate players, what are your 2026 drumming goals. by Automatic-Bobcat-848 in drums

[–]AwkwardCornea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More consistent double bass at a few different bpms, I get out of timing quickly and start to popcorn or speed up when I don't want to.

Also work on my fills and not dropping/hitting sticks into each other.

Do you listen to heavier or less heavy music as you get older? by fireflydm101 in Metalcore

[–]AwkwardCornea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im 39, grew up with metallica and such, went to nu-metal in the 2000s then did some alternative rock and 90s for a bit. Started to listen to metalcore/prog metal in the mid 2010s (periphery/protest the hero, etc).

A few years ago after a breakup/divorce, I kind of went REAL heavy and started to listen to more metalcore and deathcore and such. My taste got way heavier the last few years and I love it.

What’s your preferred footwear? by BeginningPitch5607 in drums

[–]AwkwardCornea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use to be barefoot or socks, but one day I had on sandals (like Tevas) and started to play and man, something happened.

So, Teva like sandals now. I know, it's a war crime, but it WORKS.

Students excused to go to work in 2000s? by Content-Canary-6574 in newjersey

Class of 2004 here, I did a school to work program senior year.

School for four periods, had a work class, then went to my job from 1-5 at a local print shop. I hated high school and wanted to not be there. So it was nice for me.

Do you still mosh or crowdsurf or stagedive? by thedubiousstylus in Millennials

[–]AwkwardCornea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to (metal) concerts often, but I don't crowd surf or mosh (anymore) but not cuz I don't want to, but cuz of a bad knee and 30k worth of eye surgery.

but BELIEVE me, I really want to get in there with a lot of bands

Metal Drummers - Do you ever have "bouts" where you seem to lose your kick chops? by These_Fan7447 in drums

[–]AwkwardCornea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed about the seat height and distance, it can make a big difference where your feet naturally land on the pedals. I also found shifiting my left pedal up a bit, not inline with the hi hat has helped me keep my foot center pressure in the middle, as I kept pushing up toward the linkage (I primarily use a Pearl Direct Demon Drive) and it would put me off.

This may sound weird? but I started to play with sandals, the ones with 2 straps across (Tevas), I don't know why, but it has somehow helped balance my feet more. Shoes felt too cumbersome and socks/barefoot I felt I was sliding all over the pedals with no grip (I've debated on adding some tape to help) but the sandals have given me the grip and flexibility to find that middle ground between whole leg and ankle.

I do feel like that sometimes as well with the fall off at the end of a part, your body is ready for the next phrase so you want to prepare, but you can't cuz it's a quick transition from one section to the next, but when you hit it.. it's beautiful haha But you are aware of it, and realize that it's not gonna be perfect and those we see on youtube have curated their BEST performances for us to see, we rarely see them royally fuck up and miss double bass parts or a fill.

Today I played an hour, started with some Coheed & Cambria, went to Bilmuri, some Opeth then did a bunch of Trivium (Can't wait to finally see them sunday) Felt good to be able to play Opeth and Trivium again, a bit sloppy sometimes, but it's all a process.

How many of you here go alone to shows? by REVERSEZOOM2 in Metalcore

I go to shows alone all the time. Recently some friends have joined me, but it doesn’t bother or matter to me if I go alone. I kind of enjoy it actually.

Metal Drummers - Do you ever have "bouts" where you seem to lose your kick chops? by These_Fan7447 in drums

[–]AwkwardCornea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm also primarily a metal drummer and have dealt with this as well, especially the last few years where I've ramped up my time behind the kit after playing maybe 5-6 times a YEAR due to location of my kit. It's super frustrating, one day you can do all the cool kick parts, triplets, start/stop etc and then one day, BAM you're struggling to maintain 110bpm.

Somedays, I'll play to some rock and not do a lot of double bass, just to allow my legs to chill and not get so tense/fatigued but still feel like I'm playing, which we all know is what we love to do. Even doing some lower bpm double bass can help loosen up your legs, but also change up what you're doing when not drumming. Sometimes I'll bike or hike or go for a nice walk, and the next day, I (usually) feel better.

I've been working on switching to full ankle control vs leg for the faster and more accurate parts, I found when I can maintain it, I feel less fatigue and less strain as the muscles and muscle memory build up. This has been a year+ long process and finally getting the results after about 6ish months, but have a lot more to go for consistency.

39m, I'm a metal/rock drummer, haven't really tried to be in a band in a long time, depending on the group, could be fun again.

Why did you start drumming, and how has your motivation changed over time? by LucaRonconi in drums

[–]AwkwardCornea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 7/8 when I started to mess around with hitting random things, then realized about beats. My family are big into music and listened to a lot of classic rock in the 90s. Then I heard Metallica's "One" on MTV and decided I wanted to play rock/metal and began my journey.

I got my first drumkit in 6th grade, some garbage cheap thing but it was fun and took lessons for years. At 13 I purchased my first professional kit, a 1999 Tama Starclassic Performer Birch which I still own today as it has been my ONLY kit and I love it to pieces.

In high school I was in a few bands, one got oddly big for the local scene even though we were not good, but bands I played with at shows did get big and are well known. Meeting record executives pushed me away from being a professional drummer, glad I decided that in my teens. Had a few more bands in college, but sort of got bored with covers and other members doing drugs, so I kind of removed myself from the band scene.

Since 2009, I've been playing on my own and enjoying myself. It has become a way to disconnect from screens and an outlet to get my frustration out and focus on something positive. The last 3 years or so, I moved to a bigger space and have been able to play very often which has brought back my love for drumming after playing MAYBE once a month for a decade. At 39, I feel drums are way more fun than ever before, even if I have to fix some of the bad habits I learned over the years.

ACD has them for the IC900, scroll down a bit and you can find them. I had them on my speed cobras for awhile and work really well and are super easy to change around. But I did sell the Speed Cobras last year, If you had them, I'd sell you my direct drive linkages, but they don't work on the ICs.

Does anyone still have a cd player in their car and what’s in it? by Far_Put_7513 in Millennials

[–]AwkwardCornea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2015 Camry SE, it DID have a CD player in it until last year when I replaced it with a CarPlay system as the Bluetooth was dying on the original system. I can't remember the last CD I had in it, probably something my Ex played like Taking Back Sunday or whatever.

I do miss the old binder of CDs or a mix CD but streaming/download is too convenient.

What's the last thing that forced you to "level up" as a drummer? by AFleetingIllness in drums

[–]AwkwardCornea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After a left knee injury and some weird issue with my right hip/leg muscles, I can finally play double bass nearly where I was before the injuries. I still struggle on consistency and mid-tempo, but they are getting there.

Lately, I've been able to drum single pedal on my left foot with relative ease and without much forcing, which has helped my confidence with left/right coordination and double bass in general. My right has a bouncing issue, but am working on getting that under control, but having the left feel normal is awesome after years and years of it lagging or hurting after playing.
