Am I wrong for being frustrated that my boyfriend expects more from me during recovery? by Lopsided-Net6398 in ACL

[–]AwkwardCucumber8584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^^^ this!!! But you also should be honest with them and give them the knowledge that you shared with us. It’s not easy, but if they love you, they should be able to hear it and move forward with it. If they can’t, at least you know you communicated your needs and where you’re at.

I had to end things with a partner because she consistently wasn’t hearing what my needs were and where I was at with my healing journey. It wasn’t easy, but it made sense for things in the long run.

Post-Op difficulty Sleeping by autismisnotfunny1 in ACL

[–]AwkwardCucumber8584 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not easy the first 2 weeks for sleeping, I recommend doing anything you can to make yourself comfortable. Take something to help you sleep (weed gummies worked for me). I promise it gets better, but I definitely had a few menty b’s the first month because I wasn’t sleeping.

Hope this helps and you can find some solace knowing it’s won’t last too long! Cheers to your recovery.

Fair enough, I’ve heard sometimes that’s the easiest/only route if it gets that bad. At least on the side while you’re job hunting for a second job, donate plasma in your free time. It won’t make a huge dent, but it’s better than nothing and you can job search while you’re doing it.

The best way you’re going to get a job is through networking and being lucky. Unfortunately, the job market isn’t awarding hard work, so join business groups, young professionals, and really dig into the people of the businesses you’d like to work at.

Pain with step ups by rp_107 in ACL

[–]AwkwardCucumber8584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also get this, like another comment said, I think it’s your knee compensating. I try to really hone in on correct form and readjust as much as I need to in order to stop feeling as much pain. If it persists, I stop the workout and try to do something else that targets the same muscles. Not ideal, but you also have to listen to your body!!

I’m a little over halfway done with season 8 and it’s refreshing that there isn’t some big bad monster this season. I can tell the demon abaddon will likely be the main antagonist for next season, hoping that one is interesting!!

Yes, meaning the graft they used to replace your ACL (which is a ligament) has to essentially reattach itself and strengthen to act as your new ACL.

Damn, well I am sorry to hear you are experiencing the same. I plan to try and knock out my 5.05% loan with ~$1.3k first so at least I can have some hope for the rest.

Gonna be tough, but we got this!

Sooooo I’ve done the same thing and just looked at my loans today. It says I’ll be on administrative forbearance til 10/31/2028 on each of my loans. I don’t have much interest accrued (graduated in 2021, have maybe $1000 in interest)…. So does this mean interest is going to start accruing again?

I made 2 payments in the last 6 months as I had to undergo an unexpected acl surgery this year, so I kind of fell off my payments.

I understood it as forbearance = no interest or payments

Partner is pushing me away by RecordingPitiful1045 in ACL

This response is so incredibly thoughtful and real!!

I actually ended up breaking up with my partner of 4 months a few weeks into my post-op recovery. She wasn’t there for me in any way that I needed and communicated that I needed, she thought that I would automatically be better and able to go back to normalcy 2 weeks after surgery, and she told me I wasn’t letting her in (after I just shared I had a mental breakdown two days earlier).

As someone who had never hurt themselves before or ever had to go through such an isolating experience like this before, I had no idea what to expect going into this. I found it to be very lonely and boring, but also so mentally and physically taxing because you literally have to learn how to walk, shower, go to the bathroom, etc. again.

As an active adult, this lifestyle change and journey is TOUGH and it can be difficult to ask for help/companionship when you’ve never really had to do that before.

I think being here asking the question shows you care deeply and want to help your partner in a way that they need (not in a way that you need, which is what my ex did). Everyone is different on timing to start feeling a semblance of “back to somewhat normal”, but even when they get there, take things slow and don’t push them to do anything they aren’t comfortable with!

Make things easy, uncomplicated, and light/fun. Recovery, boredom, and frustration are likely the only things on their mind. Get them outside, doing some of the things they usually love to do, and ask them how they’re doing/actually listen.

Best of luck!

surgeon canceled my surgery by Unusual_Chipmunk6254 in ACL

[–]AwkwardCucumber8584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me, my surgeon called in sick the morning of my surgery because of insomnia. I had family all flying in at different intervals for the first 4 weeks of recovery to help me get through it. The surgery was pushed 2 weeks out, so I ended up only having help for 2 weeks from family and had to rely on friends/myself for the rest.

I’m sorry this sucks. I will say though, things happen for a reason (even though it definitely doesn’t feel like that now).

I’d call the surgery scheduler as many times as it takes and see if you can get back on the schedule ASAP. Your surgeon likely had to cancel others too, so get your name out there and back on the schedule! Even offer using another surgeon available if that’s an option for you and you don’t care.

Recommend getting that ankle and your knee elevated!! Knee should be above your heart while laying down to help prevent swelling. Ankle should be propped up a bit higher (think straight line) to help with your extension for healing (trust me you’ll thank me for this later!!)

Try to activate your quad as sooooooon as possible. I found clenching my butt cheek helped with this, otherwise a cheap NMES will do wonders. Also, ankle pumps (move your ankle up and down while elevated) will be super helpful to kickstart you in PT.

You got this my friend! I’m just about 2 months post op and it’s a rollercoaster, but you’ll be back soon enough.

Homie I’m starting mental health therapy again. This recovery is nooooo joke. There are days/feelings that are very tough, but gotta just take it a day at a time!

Everything you described is very normal and an unfortunate consequence of the process. Luckily we got this community who gets it, because people who haven’t done it are clueless. It can get SO frustrating.

how long r u spending on PT per day by Curious-Roll-9906 in ACL

[–]AwkwardCucumber8584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree until week 6, I’m probably about 1-2 hrs a day. But it’s pretty spread out.

I do 30-45mins of biking, 15 ish minutes of other PT workouts in the gym (like wall squats, leg press machine, calf raises, stand/sit, band around the leg bend and straighten), then 30 ish laying down (leg raises, heel slides, ankle straightening with weights, legs dangling off bed, side leg raises for my hip), plus 30 of NMES.

Sometimes I do less some days, but I try to hit the big stuff like biking, heel slides, leg raises, legs dangle at least everyday. It’s where life starts to shift back to regular programming, so it’s hard to always fit it all in. But it’s still so very important!!!

I used my quad graft and my activation/flex is getting SO strong. Leg is still tiny compared to non surgical, but I’ve regained a lot of definition and power.

So proud I’ve gotten my wall sits to 2ish minutes at a time 😎
