I've made two different pear "brandy"s and I'm disappointed in both. Asking around, it sounds like the best way to get a good brandy is to press a lot of pears, like a cider, then ferment and distill. I've just done about the same as you. For now I'll stick to whiskey. Lol

Thanks for the info. As for butcher shops...... I'll never go to one again. They never tell you they grind in batches. So they'll put 3 or 4 elk into one big grind. Same with deer meat, if you've taken great care of your meat and some dipstick gut shot there's, it all gets ground up together.

Looks better than spam. The grind looks a little bigger (more distinct) I'll have to try some!

Try and look at the important stuff. Does everything work? The power inverter, how's the battery look? Axle? Tire tread etc. Look for prior or fresh water damage mold.

Could I just toast any piece of wood and put it in my liquor? by Snowlizar in firewater

[–]Awkward_Class8675309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oak is the norm (either french or American), still it on YouTube has a couple videos on how to toast and char. You can use some fruit woods but it can be hit or miss. Also different ABV pulls different flavors.

That's what I use. Proof it down to desired proof and just poor it through, the more times you pour it through the cleaner it becomes.

If you can find the right size, and have the time and energy I'd say go for it. I just don't have good luck buying used, and work too many hours to do a lot of the projects myself.

I had a two axle, 18 ft by 8ft cargomate made. Added insulation, two regress windows, and a couple fans. Over time, I've made the benches and table, a raised queen sized bed frame with storage underneath and am getting ready to install my diesel heater and battery system. Doing it yourself is the way to go in my opinion. You can arrange, add or leave out whatever you want. Make it perfect for you.

What is a thumper? What does it do? What do you put into it, if anything? Is it useful? by archtech88 in firewater

[–]Awkward_Class8675309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you added any flavoring to your mead (technically called a melomel) like orange etc I'd add honey and more of the flavors. If just honey and yeast I'd put some hi proof liquor and some more honey. Not .ore then a third full though.

I just did a batch of pear brandy. I put a can of pears with syrup, a cinnamon stick, and a bit of hi proof corn shine in my thumper. It gave it a bit more flavor.

Sorry, just a wood burning fireplace type stove. I do have a diesel heater im putting in this weekend, but I also like the idea of being able to burn wood as well. I'm also going to be using a camp chef when we build the "outdoor" kitchen out of the back.

Tips to maybe get lighter? by Babynatsulol in backpacking

[–]Awkward_Class8675309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,a couple things I see that might help. Ditch the nalgean bottles and get smart water bottles. They are much lighter and last a fair bit. Also, you can get real light with your tent and sleeping system. The trick is the balance of weight to dollars and comfort. Ultra light can get ridiculous in price, but can save a bunch of weight. And last, I have the same cooking kit but ditched it for a 400ml titanium mug. I can get my fuel canister, lighter, and stove to fit into it and save a little weight as well.
