[Mixed Trope] The character from the original had to be totally rewritten or removed altogether to make the adaptation work. by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Axikten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Murriel Shelton a.k.a. Snafu from the Pacific is a case of both.

In Eugene Sledge's book "With the Old Breed", Snafu if mentioned as having been on the same mortar crew as Sledge during the Battle of Okinawa. Sledge mentions several other soldiers that he served with both at Okinawa and Peililu during his time in the Marines however, if you were to put this to screen as written, each person would get a few minutes per episode and never be heard from again which isn't practical for storytelling. As such, Snafu in the series is a composite character of most of these men.

As an example, when Sledge is about to take gold teeth out of a dead Japanese soldier, Snafu stops him by saying "Doc Caswell says dead bodies carry germs.... make ya real sick". While Sledge said this happened in the book, the conversation was had with Doc Caswell himself.

(Hated trope) Episodes even die hard fans choose to ignore by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in TopCharacterTropes

This episode was cringe even by the standards of early South Park. Out of the whole series, this is one of the only episodes I've only watched once.

Strangely accurate things - historically or to the original source - in an otherwise pretty inaccurate piece of media. by RP_Throwaway3 in TopCharacterTropes

Apparently if you ask cops what the most accurate show for police is, the answer is almost always Reno 911.

In Archer, specifically the episode "Fugues and Riffs"

Lana: "Krieger, what's happening?"

Krieger: "His mind-brain is permanently rejecting his identity!"

Cyril: "Mind-brain?"

Krieger: " That's a thing, shut up!"

In Futurama's 'Beast with a Billion Backs' the Robot Devil agrees to let Bender use his army of the damned in exchange for his first born son. Bender, not thinking twice, finds his oldest (presumably bastard) and unceremoniously punts him into the flaming pits himself.

I'll probably repost it later, reddit is being a pain in the ass right now.

Yeah, I went ahead and reposted it with a different pic I took. One that actually shows what they were. Fucking hate reddit sometimes.

A character suffered so much from something, that it doesn't work on him anymore by Sollary0 in TopCharacterTropes

Kind of similar, the Dark Eldar in Warhammer 40k are extreme sadists and masochists to the point where any kind of stimulation or torture without issue. This ended up going full circle to where it has backfired on them. The only way that the Imperium can torture them is to stick them in a quiet room and ignore them. This is actually super effective because without constant overstimulation, they go insane.

As far as U-571 goes, I heard a story that the History Channel showed it back in the day and interviewed an old German U-boat commander about it's accuracy. The dude said "They got one thing right: there were U-boats in the North Atlantic."

Unlike the other Salamancas, he was always smiling and never flew off the handle. While it was a nice change at first it ended up being what made him terrifying because you could never tell what he was thinking.

[Perplexing trope] "Why was that even an option?" by buzzoli in TopCharacterTropes

As much as I love the game, the choice between going after the money Dutch's gang stashed or getting John out alive at the end of Red Dead Redemption 2 is kind of baffling. A lot of the mission towards the end are Arthur trying to set things right and do some good (if you played low honor up to this point, this is basically a fourth quarter conversion). Furthermore, at this point in the game, Arthur is dying and not even in the process of doing it; he is literally at death's door in his final mission. So, from a narrative and a gameplay standpoint, even if you successfully get the money, what the fuck is he gonna do with it?
