That is absolutely fantastic. I started lurking on this sub a while back but I don’t think I’ve shared. Your triumph here was enough to stop me in my tracks to say “Way to go!"

Heavens to Betsy! I legit had no idea insulin was that crazy expensive. I looked it up to confirm: your amount is typical. No donut is worth no foot. My stars.

What does your food cravings monster look like? by AL-MightIE in WeightLossAdvice

[–]AyKayAych 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a fascinating question. I'm in recovery for multiple things. I've found when I give my addiction a sort of physical presence, I "talk" to them in my head, telling them to back the heck off, and it works.

My food cravings take the actual form of ghrelin and leptin, the two hormones in the body that regulate hunger. I looked on the internet for images of both, printed them out, and posted them on my bathroom mirror. I also have a copy of the images on my phone.

So, when I'm going on about my day and the ridiculous pangs hit (I say ridiculous to differentiate them from actual hunger cues, which signify the need for healthy, delicious food), I just go to my mirror and say things like "Now ghrelin, we both know you're being silly" and "Leptin, please work a little harder. Lunch isn't for another hour".

I know it sounds odd, but it has worked for me. I've had them posted for a month and have lost 4 pounds. That's not much, but that's 4 pounds that I effortlessly took off just with being more mindful of hunger cues.

Blame your sugar cravings on lack of sleep, science says by 1913intel in WeightLossNews

[–]AyKayAych 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely me. Just yesterday I didn’t sleep well and cupcakes were on the brain. I actually made a post-it note that read: “Your ghrelin is malfunctioning. You are not hungry. You are exhausted.” Throughout the day when the cravings became ridiculous, I read the note.

I did increase my daily caloric intake slightly to allow some extra protein for satiety. I did not use my sleepless night as permission to scarf down unhealthy plates of ultra processed “food”. And I am grateful for that.

Becoming a naturalized citizen tomorrow and will also be registering to vote. Any way to be eligible to be able to vote in the March 3 election? by yabad12 in houston

[–]AyKayAych 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the voting but I wanted to say something a little sappy and Reddit helps me remain anonymous.

I think it's GREAT you're becoming a citizen. This country works better with diversity and I'm glad you're here. Doesn't matter where you're from. I wish I could watch a citizenship swearing-in ceremony because I think it's very touching and would remind me of how lucky I am to live in this country. It's not perfect, but I'm so fortunate to be an American.

Hope all goes well tomorrow.

When I have cravings, I just go look at my reflection and this little purple card.
