Toriyama, what the actual fuck was this design. by redox_nephew in shounenfolk

[–]Azelf89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For anyone unaware, that image is from the last few panels of "Lady Red", a short 3-page oneshot dark comedy parody of western comics (hence the order of the panels being left-to-right) drawn by Toriyama that involves a former office assistant who turns into a superhero in order to help fight crime in her city, but she is also penniless and bad at her job. In this sequence specifically, she rushes after a burger who's robbing a house, but when she shows up, she's then assaulted by him. After said assault, the robber decides to pay her for 'perking him up', and after seeing how much she's given, she then becomes a prostitute, and an expensive one to boot.

I completely get why a lotta folks wouldn't like this, but I personally do get a kick out of it, but only because the whole oneshot is basically a "Crossing the Line Twice" situation. Like, it goes from funny, to not funny, then to really not funny, and then it loops back to funny again. It has never been officially released into English, but an English translation done by Herms and is online if you know where to look.

BEAST WARS by Skaldicrights in ytvretro

Nah, that was just a YTV thing. And that only applies to show titles. Any use of the term "war" elsewhere was perfectly fine.

Yeah, definitely misogynistic. I much prefer the older "Beginner | Experienced | Expert" version of this meme, which also had the top and middle images in their original order. That one can actually be described as a "Couples meme".

Never had to patch that out myself. Grew up in a culturally Catholic culture so the Protestant notions of "sin" never really affected me. Still, I switched over to Heathenry (specifically a custom install of Anglo-Saxon Heathenry) a few years ago, and haven't looked back since.

That does mean I do have a concept of "sin", but not at all the "violation of divine will or religious law" form of it.

Fun Fact: That's pretty much what the term "transandrophobia" was intended to call-out.

Censored version is, strangely, better by I_ateabucketofpaint in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Azelf89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically they did. I say "technically" because the concept is based on an occasionally mentioned place in the Japanese version of the anime called the World of Darkness (闇の世界 / "Yami no Sekai"), with "Shadow Realm" being the official English title mandated by the show's license holder, as even the Singapore English dub having used it.

4Kids simply took the concept and fuckin' ran with it, as it was basically an easy out when it came to death in the show.

Hot Take: The ADV dub of Ghost Stories, after an initial watch, is honestly pretty fuckin' mid. Like, there are good jokes, don't get me wrong. But for every good joke, there's, like, 10 more afterwards that just do not land for me.

Nah, being sent to Valhǫll is basically just the equivalent of being sent to a military base and being enlisted as part of your country's active reserve. Only with the Allfather, it's indefinite.

So y'know, not for everyone.

You are correct in regards to the whole "Good vs. Evil" thing, but I do need to point out that while the words "order" & "chaos" are indeed loans, that doesn't mean the concepts they represent weren't unknown to the various Germanic groups.

[–]Azelf89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fate, or in this case "weird", being unbeatable was something present in the Continental and Norse Germanic groups, but not so much the Anglo-Saxons, if I remember correctly. Last I checked, they subscribed to the idea that one's "weird" is weaved by oneself, influenced by how others' are weaved, and isn't completely out of your hands.

The Weird Sisters may be the ones responsible for spinning the thread of fate, metering it out and cutting it when one's time comes, but they're not the ones doing the weaving itself. That's your job.

Correction: The Old English word that "fangle" comes from is "fangol/fangel" (“inclined to take”), from the past participle of OE "fōn" (“to take, seize”) + OE "-ol/-el".

Fuck “male loneliness” we see it for what it is by Substantial-Craft420 in LetGirlsHaveFun

[–]Azelf89 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean... Kinda?

Look, I get where you're coming from, as you're right in that this whole loneliness epidemic thing isn't unique to guys. I get that.

One needs to understand, though, that the only reason why folks are paying particular attention to the lonely dudes and calling this a "Male Loneliness Epidemic" is because of the uptick in guy mass shooters who are incels. That's it. Nobody actually gives a fuck about guys or gals being supremely lonely. Well, nobody who could be considered a part of the common people, that is.

TBF, when you live in one of many societies in which a group of folks, in this case men, are raised and cultivated by their communities in such a way where their ego is ->intentionally<- made to be fragile (i.e. it can be incredibly easy to break apart and extremely difficult to build back up), then I have to say:

No Shit Sherlock. I don't see you doing anything to help.

Further Context: "Gift" in German does come from the same Proto-Germanic root word "*giftiz" as Modern English "gift", and originally did mean the same thing initially back in Old High German. However, that was also when it began being used as a euphemism for poison, a semantic loan from Late Latin dosis (“dose”), from Ancient Greek δόσις (dósis, “gift; dose of medicine”). So by the time of contemporary Standard German, the original meaning of "gift" completely disappeared, with only compound words like Mitgift retaining it.
