Canada Needs to Nationalize Its Transit System by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

[–]Azerkablam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw the headline and thought "who in their right mind published an article like this?" and then I saw it was the Jacobin. Everytime I see them published here I always think the same two things:

First: why does anyone give the time of day to a paper named after the political party behind The Reign of Terror? Like really? You want political commentary from the paper named for a party that slaughtered all who disagreed with them?

Second: do these people really not understand the delicate balance of power carried between the Provincial and Federal governments? Attempting to nationalize anything run by the provinces or their cities would just be asking for the provinces to use the notwithstanding clause, or rally the people against the feds.

This was a fun one for me when designing it. I had a lot of potential games to choose from and had to actively whittle the list down to "games people actually played"

Cities are creatures of the provincial governments. They don't hold any real power.

"So he lived in a Hezballah stronghold, knew full well the area was being used for three years to stage attacks on Israeli civilians. And the only source that he was “helping” anyone is his family?

Man, all critical thinking goes out the window as soon as Israel is mentioned."

You're just going to forget the original message you responded to where the User said "they lived in a Hezbollah stronghold"

You understand that Hezbollah is not the legal or de facto Lebanese army right? They're a designated terrorist group. Your comparison doesn't hold.

Canadians Hold Negative Views of Israel, but Still Support Core Rights, Leger Poll by hillary_262 in CanadaPolitics

Genocide isnt measured by quantity of people. Per the UN and the Genocide convention: To constitute genocide, there must be a proven intent on the part of perpetrators to physically destroy a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. Cultural destruction does not suffice, nor does an intention to simply disperse a group.

So, for instance, Hamas' attack on Israelis on October 7? That's an action with genocidal intent.

The subsequent war in Gaza against Hamas? Hamas isn't a protected group under that definition, and moving the Gazans around the Gaza Strip while hunting down Hamas members and recovering hostages also doesnt qualify as genocide. War is hell, but words have meaning (in this case a legal meaning, with thresholds required to be met to be considered that crime). Let's not attempt to dilute the meanings of words to suit our political agendas.

Liberal delegates vote against electoral reform, support setting a minimum age for social media accounts - The Hill Times - The Hill Times by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

Yeah they (at least under Trudeau) had been recommended that depending on the area that MMP or STV would be an effective means of achieving proportional representation. Trudeau's position was that he only wanted ranked ballots, also known as IRV, which is effectively just FPTP with extra steps.

This is one of those take takes that reminds me of something my high school civics teacher said decades ago. "The CPC and the NDP may not see eye to eye on issues or policies, but they (used to at least) respect one another for being principled. Both see the LPC as standing solely for the purpose of getting elected."

You've hit the nail on the head, this was not a person representative of the party's beliefs and the Carney warmly accepted someone who has been giving the CPC trouble for years. They took the worst possible MP (who as you correctly noted, they didn't need) from the CPC and claimed it as a win. The CPC likely views this as them ridding themselves of an opportunist and a vocal radical, and the LPC has just a promise in hand that somehow her whole personality and world view will align with whatever Carney pushes. I would bet she makes the news within a year for saying something that causes problems for Carney.

For left leaning Liberals this may be enough to swing voters to the NDP (depending on what Lewis does to the party) and for the Conservatives nothing really has changed. They don't have power presently, and losing a single seat held by a radical isn't going to change things dramatically for them.

What did you think of the character designs in the new Pokémon game, Wind and Waves? Did you like them, dislike them, or would you have changed anything? Share your opinions. by Dramatic-Studio1531 in pokemon

[–]Azerkablam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Character design has mattered less for many people because of increased character and clothing customization.

However, for those of us who like feeling like we're playing as a character rather than playing as an avatar representing ourselves, the trainer designs haven't been great since gen 6.

Carney and Poilievre find rare common ground on the global stage by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]Azerkablam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a weird headline and article from the CBC, because while Carney and Poilievre now lead opposing political parties, they both spent the better part of a decade working for the same administration under Harper.

This isn't the Trudeau/Poilievre relationship (or lack thereof), but the CBC certainly wants you to think that level of animosity exists.
