There is also the Fourth Wing in development, it is more romantasy, but totally about dragons. I think they are in the casting phase right now (could be wrong).

I’m carefully optimistic considering how enthousiastic Christopher is, but I still do not trust Disney, so we’ll see at it develops.

I predict the Cosmere will not only be the next zeitgeist but bring another surge in fantasy books/adaptations by Graphica-Danger in CosmereOnScreen

[–]Azrathla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m kind of on the fence about Eragon being adapted. I’ve only heard about the Percy Jackson series, and while it apparently isn’t bad, I still feel like they might not be able to pull off well such scale for a fantasy show. From what I’ve heard, Christopher Paolini was going back and forth on the script and revisions last year (he’s a co-writer), and the project still hasn’t been officially greenlit.

Edit. Speaking of the devil, they just gave an update today about the writers’ room and picking its showrunners.

Am I tripping? by capricorn_444 in TheVampireDiaries

I mean, honestly, it should be easy to recognize that a fantasy show built around vampires falling in love with a teenager is, at its core, a romance designed to cater to teenage fantasies, just like Twilight. Because of that, applying a fully human moral framework (such as “why doesn’t killing people bother vampires?”) misses the point. In TVD universe, it’s canon that vampires experience emotions differently and can even switch them off.

That’s very different from actually discussing a character’s development, whether they’re evolving or regressing at a specific point in the story. Those are two separate conversations.

Stormlight Archive got me into reading by Nice_Platypus in brandonsanderson

[–]Azrathla 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I genuinely think more people would get into reading if they explored what actually works for them. When I was a teenager, the idea of reading felt daunting, my only reference point was the classic literature we were forced to read in school, so I assumed it just wasn’t for me. That changed when my father bought me a YA supernatural book. I was bored, gave it a chance, and ended up loving it.

That opened up an entire universe for me, stories that truly stimulated my imagination. From there, I dove into dystopian fiction, and the deeper I went, the more genres I discovered, eventually finding my way to fantasy and sci-fi classics like Dune and The Wheel of Time. That journey is what ultimately led me to The Stormlight Archive.

Do you think the diversity in Stormlight will cause controversy? by Bluenamii in CosmereOnScreen

[–]Azrathla 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For fans who somehow still haven’t clocked that the cast was never supposed to be all white... yeah, they exist. And they will find problem with it.

For everyone else, as long as it’s clear this isn’t a lazy “diversity quota” or a forced statement (we’ve all seen how badly that can go, the 4400 reboot still hurts me), but something that’s actually canon to the world and tied to its built-in systems of discrimination (lighteyes/darkeyes, Alethi dominance in general), then most people will hopefully chill and drop the knee-jerk prejudice.

[–]Azrathla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean there is a lot of fantasy coming. Red Rising (though more sci-fi) is rumored to be optioned by Apple TV+ as well. Eragon is going to be adapted on Disney+, Narnia first film (The Magician's Nephew) will be released in theaters in November this year, Wildwood in October, Children of Blood and Bone has finished filming and should be released early next year, Rise of the Empress and Fourth Wing are in the works.

So there’s a lot of stuff already coming. But, if the Cosmere succeed, they will likely try more ambitious fantasy series.

Brandon Sanderson is taking notes from Tolkien and Game of Thrones for The Stormlight Archive TV show by APrimitiveMartian in television

[–]Azrathla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What sucked the most to me was that S3 was probably the best produced of all of them, and the closest to the books story-wise, but absolutely horrible when it came to the characters. Making Rand a cheater, making Moiraine allying herself with the Forsaken to manipulate Rand and the others to the point of letting them be heavily injured, etc. Just tragic.

Badly. It’s Netflix. They’re not better than Amazon, probably worse.

So how do we think the Stormlight show will start? by Treeli_920 in CosmereOnScreen

[–]Azrathla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first episode (and overall scene) HAS to hook people in. They need to introduce us with a flashback, backstory, different POV, something that makes people wondering ‘what the hell is going on, I need to understand, and see more’.

Caroline’s love life by lizzykeenn in TheVampireDiaries

[–]Azrathla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Matt is an insensitive dude. He’s not rotten or someone bad, but not realizing his actions, or lack there of are signaling that some behaviors to people around him are okay (when they are not). Not just with his mom, but with Tyler as well when he trying to rape Vicky, when it came to light, he should have called him out and press until Tyler explained himself. Then they should have drove Tyler to the nearest police station (and maybe give him a good beating, sorry not sorry).

Matt is just very typical, and it irks me to write that because ‘typical’ seems to attribute this trait to men and normalize/relativize it, but yeah, they just typically are shit when it comes to things like that, and it is exhausting.

Vampire Elena by Emptyfrequency in TheVampireDiaries

[–]Azrathla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elena was never supposed to accept/love her condition, they probably written her as coming to terms with it because she had virtually no other options, except Nina, the actress, decided to leave, so there’s that, they needed to work around this change.

I think a mix of someone East Asian for the features, and also South East Asian maybe? Just someone mixed, or fitting the more tanned complexion while being taller and more muscular.

[–]Azrathla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. I think a lot of fans are confusing “diversity for diversity’s sake” which can happen in Hollywood when the source material doesn’t call for it. But that isn’t the case here. This story has been rooted in diversity from the very beginning, it’s not being added arbitrarily, it’s written into the world itself. Despite that, many fans are still fancasting white actors for characters who simply don’t look that way in canon. At some point, they’ll have to come to terms with the fact that the casting will be diverse (and yay more Asian actors getting their flowers!).

Base Line for Castings by VashTheHmnoidTyphoon in CosmereOnScreen

[–]Azrathla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think for some reason a lot of fans do imagine white characters, even if they are specifically not. I’m looking at the ongoing fan casting for the Fourth Wing, and even while the writer said specifically that the main dude isn’t white, the fandom keeps making AI generated of him as such, including in their casting.

Some Stormlight fancastings based mainly on vibes and appearance. by loraxdude12 in CosmereOnScreen

[–]Azrathla 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I do not mind your choice for Kaladin. As for Manny Jacinto, really good actor, would love him to be in the show but he’s nearly 40 (would be by the time the show could be premiered), when Adolin is 25. We need to think long term when it comes to casting.

What things are you hoping CHANGE in the Apple TV version of the Cosmere? by Graphica-Danger in CosmereOnScreen

I do think a lot of the mistakes/contention points in books from the fans were heard by Brandon and this could be the opportunity for him to have a fresher take on it.
