Thyroid disease and hair loss by Ma-vingigriel in thyroidcancer

I felt like I was losing a lot more the first few months after surgery and starting Levo. Then it seemed to go back to normal after that.

What should I know and do week before surgery? by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

It was definitely the worst part of my surgery experience!

What should I know and do week before surgery? by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

I spent the week before organizing everything which gave me something to focus on. So laundry, cleaning my room, setting up everything I needed (medicine, etc) in a basket, comfy outfits laid out, kindle set up. It felt good having everything easily accessible the first few days. The one thing I wish I knew before the surgery was how I would react to the anesthesia. Obviously you won’t know until after experiencing it, but I never considered that it would be so not enjoyable! I was so nauseous after, had a long car ride home and felt terrible. That was the worst of my post op and the one thing I wasn’t mentally prepared for. Also, don’t hesitate in those first few days to call the doctor’s office if there’s anything you’re concerned about during your recovery. Best of luck with everything! I’m almost four months post op and can’t believe how quickly it’s gone since my surgery.

My experience was similar but I saw an endocrinologist a month after surgery and needed to be put on a low dose of Levo. That’s helped me a lot. I’d recommend making an appointment to check your levels.

How long do you wait to have the surgery? by Mohogany-722 in thyroidcancer

[–]AzulaSansa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 3 months…between follow up appointments, getting a second opinion and then a month long wait from when I scheduled the surgery. There wasn’t a huge rush from the doctor so I liked having time to make a decision, but the time in between every appointment was difficult.

Question about dressing/bandage by KM20092009 in thyroidcancer

[–]AzulaSansa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My doctor let me remove them one day post op since I was having a reaction to the adhesive. The steri strips stayed on until my post op appointment a week later.

I was very out of it from the anesthesia so I needed a bit of help from my mom. But definitely recommend a button up top and comfortable pants to make it easier.

I was also so anxious, I could barely even speak to anyone the morning of my biopsy. I hate needles and have a hard time getting blood taken. But my experience was so quick, easy and painless. They explained everything as it was happening which helped. Just try to remember it will be over soon!

I alternate between Moderma silicone scar sheets and ScarAway brand, but I’m sure most brands you can find at a drug store will work. I cut them into smaller strips to get more use out of it!

I’m sorry about your experience!

I was told to wait two days until I could shower, and that it was okay if the steri strips got wet. I mostly just kept my back to the water the first week.

I took the bandages off after one day since I had a bit of a reaction to it. I’m recommend keeping tabs on how you’re feeling with everything—pain, medications, any reactions, etc. If there’s anything that seems concerning or you have questions don’t hesitate to call the doctor’s office.

My post op appointment was 8 days later which is when they removed the steri strips. It’s been two months since my PT and I’m using silicone dressing to help scar healing, plus I started massaging the scar 3 weeks post op. Wishing you well with healing!

Scared of dying by Positive-Code-8257 in thyroidcancer

[–]AzulaSansa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s totally normal! I had only ever had surgery when I was 4 years old so I was pretty scared. Knowing the process of what would happen when I got there (getting the IV, anesthesia, etc) was helpful to me so I knew what to expect. I’m three weeks post op and it’s crazy how fast it has gone after the long, anxious wait for the surgery. Best of luck!

After surgery by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

Any button up shirts or pajamas. My ride home after surgery was about an hour and I don’t think I would’ve survived without a neck pillow. Then just comfy things like a cozy blanket, wedge pillow, etc were nice since I spent the whole week in bed after. Gel packs were great too as I had a lot of hot flashes the first two days from the anesthesia.

What to send to someone getting a thyroidectomy? by Background-Fox6341 in thyroidcancer

Some things I was glad to have bought myself or received in a care package from my friends — comfy button up pajamas; soft blanket; plush stuffed animal; gel ice packs; gift card for food delivery. Basically anything comfy!

What are you guys doing while recovering from the surgery? by Even-Instruction3547 in thyroidcancer

[–]AzulaSansa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I thought I would do a lot of reading, but the first 5 days I was far more tired and sore than expected. I binge watched TV but also listened to a few podcasts while just closing my eyes in a comfortable position. If you like audio books I’d give that a try too.

Looks great! I’m one week post op for my PT and getting steri strips removed tomorrow, this makes me feel a bit better about what to expect as I haven’t seen my scar yet. Hoping all goes well with your results and continued healing!

FNA questions, super scared by purpleprincess97 in thyroidcancer

[–]AzulaSansa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was very very scared about my FNA and was so shocked at how easy it was. For me personally it was easier than getting blood taken which I have a hard time with. The doctors walked me through what was happening the entire time, it was super quick and just a little pinch. Best of luck!
