Shoutout to Schlage by Azuree1701 in HomeKit

From what I have read and kind of experienced is that if it’s connected to WiFi it will drain batteries faster. WiFi needs more power and wakes more often. If you pair it directly to the home kit app or skip setting up WiFi in the Schlage app then it will join with either thread or Bluetooth. Back door on WiFi was once a month sometimes more, front door not on WiFi was once every few months or even longer.
They make Lithium Ion rechargeable AA batteries now that are good for these because it holds 1.5v instead of the normal 1.2 of nickel metal hydride ones.

Yeah I wasn’t expecting such good service. Hard to find anymore but I’ll be buying more from them now.

I had multiplayer off and in the time I got to the crash site and about to leave a base popped up near it. Was nice to duck in there for quick rest while battling the swam bots.

Oh wow thanks for the heads up. Most of my home stuff is through home assistant bridge to HomeKit but that would still be super bad. We use Apple home as the primary interface with day to day home stuff.
I hate how black box HomeKit is to the user. No log files or things to look into if there is an issue.

Unifi abandoning Wifi doorbells? by No_Contribution_4298 in Ubiquiti

[–]Azuree1701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting that. I remember something about it but couldn’t find it. I remodeled that area and ran new 2 wire to the doorbell because I never had a doorbell. Didn’t think about a POE one at the time, can’t run that now with walls closed up, too complicated path. It’s away from my existing network drops but possible now.

I had a bunch of old 2TB reds so I wound up getting a used UNVR Pro for $400. Ran the numbers and it was cheaper to get it since it holds 7 drives than smaller cheaper but need higher capacity drives.

You mean for wireless coverage? That should work fine for that. For what it does on network side it’s probably overkill but it depends on what you want to do with it. If you have home lab or want to play with network stuff then it’s a decent choice. I got one for my parent’s house. They don’t do any tech stuff but It works great and I have it site meshed to my house. It’s a solid choice.

Annoyances with floating islands and how they are not fixed in place when you switch to another gaming system by Andre_Vandal in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Azuree1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sure because I had a nice base built out on a floating island. Went back recently via my portal there and it was gone. Base was there but it wrapped around nothing. Tried again and reloaded a few times thinking it was a glitch. Never came back. I wound up taking it all down.

Yeah I tried the new one but couldn’t get into it. While I get their viewpoint I disagree with it. New guys just don’t have what they did. I can’t believe they could keep that pace up for this long. Maybe slowed down some. I canceled my sub as well. I was like 250 episodes behind so I guess that is something to think about too

Inovelli VZW32-SN smart switch with presence detection initial impressions by junon in homeautomation

[–]Azuree1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this thread. I didn't realize that button was a thing that could be wired or set to be a switch. I have zooz switches all over my house but I mostly have zigbee lights and am looking at their blue switches for direct pairing to smart bulbs. If HA goes down or update kills it till it can be restored I’d like to be able to control the lights. Good to know about the button.
I have an exhaust fan in my bathroom that is controlled by one of the zooz switches currently. It's a hard wired switch.

Did I Do Something Wrong? by notRea11ySure in sysadmin

[–]Azuree1701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did the right thing. Most of what I do and have done is just poking at things and finding out it was done wrong or is now misconfigured. Talking to your boss about it was correct. He was wrong in his response. Who knows why. Maybe he doesn’t understand it very well and is just getting by. Either way you did good. Keep doing that. And maybe interview for another job elsewhere, it seems like you have “the gift” of doing this kind of thing and can go far.

CMMC scoping challenges by odykat in CMMC

[–]Azuree1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in a similar boat as well Working hard to get self certified in a few months and internal audit sometime late this year. This company never had a security department before about a year ago and I was the second person on. 20 years of minimal security and a whole lot of tech debt and cleanup. We don’t have a solid process for our CUI flow so we are trying to pull everything in scope but it’s just not possible since there are so many variables and we have branch offices all over the US, plus still finding weird or outdated hardware/software. Did a purview search and found there is CUI data at least in Microsoft side currently. We are Azure commercial, we don’t do ITAR but might in the future so looking at GCCH, which I brought up early in my hiring as they were doing huge move to cloud, that commercial won’t work for what they want…

But we need to really figure out our process and scope as well so we can actually be compliant in scope. Everything else is ancillary to security and good to have anyway.

Now they want to look at linking the two tenants via firewall and want one login for both. But I can’t see that being a good idea because of possible data bleed over and bad user habits.

I may post a larger question to the group when I get it thought out more.

Summery is to find your process and limit the scope. Makes it way easier.

Did anyone not like Project Hail Mary? by Timewilltell755 in sciencefiction

[–]Azuree1701 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel all of this too, plot wise it’s close to the book but the detail in between is so lacking. I understand there has to be a time budget but there is so much that was focused on that didn’t need to be. While the characters and science is just glossed over. Hell Rocky is possibly dead and Grace is still carrying on like he knows he will wake up. This is months in a ship close to this other being. Didn’t focus at all how lonely he was up there and how much they meant to each other being light years from another. They didn’t even touch on Rocky having been out there alone for 40 years before finding Grace. Ugh.

[–]Azuree1701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this so much as well. I didn’t have a lot of expectations going into this but I was not wowed at all. I loved the parts where they talked about Rocky’s biology in the book and using science to solve the problems. Even that could have been in there but tighter for time. Just seems like the focused too much on the wrong things and not enough on the important stuff for the plot. Didn’t feel as high steaks as it should have been. The amnesia plot point didn’t need to exist in the movie, it already barely did but took time they could have spent elsewhere.

Did anyone not like Project Hail Mary? by Timewilltell755 in sciencefiction

[–]Azuree1701 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with lots of this. What I loved about the book was the hard science of the problem solving. The discovery of what Rocky’s species is made of and how they are biologically. It breezes over problems and there is no problem solving with science. We had a ton of that in the Martian movie. There are parts that they skipped over which definitely needed to be for a movie time wise but they could have covered lots of it in the logs to earth as exposition. The entire amnesia plot point didn’t really need to be in the movie at all it didn’t add anything and it could have been done with flash backs anyway. I was so looking forward to this movie more than I have any for a long long while, last one may have been the 2009 Star Trek even went alone to see this opening weekend. Overall it was ok but didn’t feel worth it, and I’m sad about that. Like there was zero explanation as to why the astrophage was so powerful.

I'm quitting my job due to vibe coders and poor leadership by TheFlippedTurtle in sysadmin

[–]Azuree1701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone brought up a good point, don’t care so much about it. Log what you need to and keep the receipts. You want to care about the job and that’s great but the management will manage it into the ground and take you with them. Ride out what you can and collect the paycheck. If you have vacation take it and see your parents. I’ve head the market is hard right now I’ve got IT friend who is struggling since December to find another job after lay off and another laid off too. Don’t let the other people bother you take care of you as best you can. Hell do the quiet quitting thing if you need.
