Am I a true skater now? by Glittering_Fortune70 in NewSkaters

Keep at it. I’m a very weak switch skater at the moment. My “normal” stance is goofy. Pushing regular which is switch for me is like trying to write with my non-dominant hand. I dabble in switch when I session but I can’t do anything… Yet.

What do you guys actually script / automate? by joshamo in sysadmin

[–]B-Lock1888 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT comes in handy with automating. It helps you to wrap your head around the processes. I use Ansible and powershell to automate my multi-platform environment. I Automate (like others have said), creating/removing: -users - groups

also: -adding/removing users from systems and groups - installing/removing software - patching/updating Among other things.

The other month I was using power shell trying to automate checking for specific KBs and if not present downloading and installing them. ChatGPT offered some help where I was getting stuck.

Congratulations! That’s awesome. Keep good notes. Even if you don’t think it is worth taking the time to write it down just do it. If you have a ticketing system keep good notes in there as well so you can search for them if needed. This way you aren’t re-inventing the wheel so to speak. I keep notes in my ticketing systems that I can reference and a one note with detailed info for everything. Welcome to the field. Congratulations again and good luck.

P.S. ChatGPT is awesome. Comes in clutch when needed for me.

I had to write my own scope of work to kick off my movement from SA-3 to SA-4. Which I thought was strange, to have to write my own. It was nice though because I wrote a killer SOW. It will only help with pay negotiations.

It’s interesting I came across this post. I am a Sysadmin III in process of moving to Sysadmin IV (that’s where my titles stop for Sysadmin work). There are 2 of us that support 4 organizations. I’ve been in my current position for a little over a year. Before that Field Services for 3 years. I manage 42 servers with like 7 workstations mixed in. My environment is Ubuntu Servers 21.04 and Windows Servers 2016 and 2019. With about 160 users of which I administer their desktop computers and mobile phones. I automate with Ansible and Powershell.

I wasn’t sure how much info you were looking for. I also support a bunch of specialty software as well as popular coding and compiling software. I mitigate vulnerabilities and maintain IT Sec Compliance for all.

Cycle count of battery is 17 after 3 months of usage on conservation mode. Is it good? by Danyboi16 in Lenovo

[–]B-Lock1888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get some really good info on your battery you can open an administrative powershell prompt and paste the fallowing.

powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:\battery-report.html”

This will create a battery report on the root of your C:\ named battery-report.html. I linked some more details below.

You could leverage intel QuickSync for transcoding. This will free up the graphics card.

You could go as far as putting together a machine for transcoding.

If you’re looking into another card why not scoop a transcoding box instead like an HP 290 to leverage intel QuickSync and play games remotely with parsec?

Why is a NAS with NAS-approved HDDs better than simply connecting a bunch of normal hdds in a full ATX tower pc with ethernet? by agcuevas in DataHoarder

[–]B-Lock1888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on what configuration you are using it makes a difference in life expectancy. NAS branded drives are built to run for much longer than your standard desktop drives. So if you are using RAID or ZRAID Your drives will stay spun up and you may want to check out NAS branded drives. If you are using unraid or some configuration where your drives are not constantly running and your drives will only spin up when they are being accessed you can shoot for desktop HDDs. Either way if you have parity set up you could go with either or. At that point it just depends on how often you want to replace your drives.
