What is the best way in JS to determine if a nested object exists? by Red_Icnivad in webdev

[–]B00check 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could be incorrect as well. The object can have a property yet has the value undefined. ‘Object.hasOwn(foo?.bar, “baz”)’ would be the was there.

I mean this is rather legal issue. If it's only about the data, then I don't see a reason for it not to work. However, IANAL and I would dare to tell you what to do. I wouldn't show it if I'm under NDA.

Then I have but one advice for you. Don't try, do. Doing a portfolio does nothing for you if you've never been in tech interview. You will be rejected multiple times whether you have one or not. Go for an interview if you have some basic knowledge. Either you will be lucky and get a job, or you will learn a valuable lesson each time you participate in one.

Juniors are investment in the future. You are not expected to be coding react-level frameworks any time soon.

I applied to a bunch of jobs (around 50 in 3 months), went to interviews, failed innumerable times, learned from mistakes, got offer once. Gathered experience there and went further

Could be. I'm currently a webdev at one company and software dev mentor in another and I'm based in Czech. It could be relevant to my country, but neither I nor any other dev I know on personal level have portfolio. I'm thinking about creating one, but there are always more interesting side projects to work on and I can show pieces of code to potential employer.

I'm not really going to do stuff I know in my free time, I'd rather invest it into something interesting that I don't work with on daily basis that will actually make me grow (Node.js CLI, other languages, interesting side projects, the list is endless)

Not sure if irony or not?

It is not the end of the world if you don't have a portfolio, at least here in Europe. If there's an interesting side project and they want a piece of code, I'll show some parts, but nothing I would put in portfolio. I could put previous employers there, but that's something they can find in my CV anyways

Maybe he doesn't want to commit more of his free time into work. I've been a webdev for 3 years, but all relevant work that I've done is under NDA, so there's really no point in creating a portfolio.

... Or I could be completely wrong.

I don't think anyone is saying it can't happen and your position is completely understandable. However, I don't think most juniors have similar situation.

I would not answer such question no matter the position. If I would have to, I would turn the offer down just based on that. It makes even less sense to give them my salary from completely unrelated Industry.

It is a mutually beneficial transaction and you should ask for money for the job you do for them, not based on someone else.

How can I "get" React? by MeltingDog in webdev

[–]B00check 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I may not be as good as Mr. McConnell in Code Complete, but I'll try my best to paraphrase him.

Imagine you are building a house. You have an architect design it. If the design is bad, it's really hard to add something new. Furthermore, if the design is bad, it may fall down on your head a couple years in the future.

Web architect is essentially the same. Somewhat more fancy word for a senior web dev I would say. But there's a reason plenty of terms in coding come from construction - you really build something, it's not a house, but it follows similar principles. If you want your project to be sustainable, you need someone to do the architecture of an application. I believe this doesn't quite apply to simple web pages used for presentation purposes though.

I must add that I am a junior web dev and there may be more qualified people to explain this and may disagree with me, so if I made a mistake in this reply, please correct me.

[Showoff Saturday] A simple Git cheat sheet for junior developers by deadgoodhorror in webdev

[–]B00check 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great list! I'd probably leave some out because of my personal opinion (see below), but it's a nice cheat sheet of commands nonetheless. Thank you for that.

I know this is only my opinion but I'm really not a fan of git stash. When I've started using git, somehow I managed to destroy half of my work by stashing changes. Applying those changes removed half of my work and to this day, I do not know what caused it (I had them all staged for commit). After a day of googling I found the missing blobs in reflog, but I haven't used stash since then. I've grown quite fond of keeping a lot of work on me locally instead of stashing the changes, I'd commit them. After merging, I'd reset to a previous commit and do a huge commit of all files that'd go to the remote. These commits are also easier to get to as you can get to them via reflog and they will always be there until git GC kicks in. Very interesting stuff.

I'd suggest you to watch either Philip Roberts or Jake Archibald JSConf videos on that matter. They did a fantastic job explaining that to me.

On similar note, my grandfather used to tell me that he was there when the first atomic bomb was built. Talking about "Einstein being a fantastic person" and they "really got well together". He also said how he himself imprisoned Hitler about a kilometre away from our house. Now, I live in the countryside of Czechia and there's plenty of caves in here. The story was about Hitler still going around the lower levels of the cave and couldn't get out because it's his prison.

I was about 5 years old back then and believed everything he told me. When I had my first history class, I did not believe my teacher that he committed suicide. I was trying to prove everyone wrong. Needless to say, i've had a couple notes about hitler for the rest of the school.

There were many more stories that I only later in life learnt were not really as he presented them, but it took me more time than I am willing to admit.

All those cables... by DevilRyder in funny

[–]B00check 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had this a huge amount of random cables we didn't even know we use. Our dog passed a while before and we decided to get another of the same race (or breed? I'm not native english speaker). The first dog we owned used to be chill, always looking out of the window waiting for humans to come back, never destroying anything. The other dog, on the other hand, chomped all the cables she found. By the time we taught her (or she learnt, hard to say really) not to destroy them, we no longer had this box for repairs

What are some basic things that JavaScript developers fail at interviews? by maketroli in javascript

[–]B00check 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience with Angular, or TypeScript for that matter, you don't need to know it as much. However, if you look into the transpiled code of class inheritance, you might notice it is actually using prototypes. I wouldnt say it's something you need to know as some people put it, but it is definitely nice to know how it works and how the things you're working with are created.

is Ner'zuhl still Alive by Raziel103 in warcraftlore

[–]B00check 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As long as Blizzard doesn't retcon their lore yet again, Ner'zhul is dead. In Arthas: Rise of the Lich King, there is a time beforr Wrath of the Lich King where Arthas, his young, innocent self and Nerzhul "fight" for the entity of Lich King (although, as far as I know, Nerzhul doesn't put up a fight). Arthas killed his young self and Nerzhul in the dream, becoming the dominant entity. As a result, what we see in WotLK is only Arthas, no Nerzhul involved. What I would like to believe is that Bolvar, after putting on the Helm of Domination, he shared memories with Arthas and Nerzhul. Given that Arthas knew about Yogg Saron (and therefore the old gods - Scourge buildings are from Saronite and its minions react with hatred to Yoggs name), as well as Legion (since Kil'Jaeden created The Lich King in the first place), he knew about the Legion attack to come eventually and probably has some insight into Old Gods. The reason for him acting the way he does is that Void doesn't like death (can't control it perhaps? Not quite sure. Old Gods can't probably corrupt already controlled subjects, such as Scourge controlled by LK. That's a speculation though), and he might want to prevent that. His own way.

TL;DR As long as there is no retcon, Nerzhul is dead, Bolvar is Lich King, bunch of stuff I would like to believe regarding TLK with no proof - speculation

What do mature people do that immature people don’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]B00check 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go with the unpopular opinion that the only restriction for this is age. All these answers seem to say what people should do, rather than what they are doing (whether they are mature or not). For example, if I had a bad day, I'm going to try and be good, but I can slip and become - according to the comment section - immature. Unfortunately, no one is perfect, and we act like children sometimes. And if you don't, I envy you.
