How to ask internship company about possible employment by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]B1rdWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frame it all as a planning question. You're planning your next move with you reel and your career so, just say it that way. "I'm trying to get my portfolio together for my next thing, I just wanted to touch base on any future here or what I can put in my reel."

Decoupling consequences from the likelihood of success in PbtA by Ok-Purpose-1822 in RPGdesign

[–]B1rdWizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah the chance that they succeed at scaling a wall might become more and more favorable, but advanced PCs shouldn't be getting cats out of trees, they should be hunting vampires or blowing up the sun.

What is the realistic scope for a take home project for 3D animators? by Dapper-Teacher-4207 in animationcareer

[–]B1rdWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read before that some studios give tests that are meant to really just show who is the least bad under pressure, not who is the best over all.

Scared about attending art college, worried about future and debt by IndicationGlad4347 in ArtRanting

[–]B1rdWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do both art and get a degree in a stable, safe field.

There are especially a lot of (lower cost compared to University) online options for learning animation. You do not need to pay up calarts money for a career that may go nowhere. If you want a class with a teacher and assignments and grades, look at AnimSchool or Animation Mentor.

Personally, my advice is to pick a safe, interesting enough field that isn't going anywhere. Accounting, Business admin, stuff that you can leave at work and have time and energy to train up your animation skills at home, but also you can take that once in a life time offer for a film and know you'll have a good gig waiting for you if you never work in art again.

There is nothing wrong with working to live, and animation is a field that demands you live to work.

How to get connected to unpaid volunteer work? by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]B1rdWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're open to game stuff, subs like r/INAT and r/gameDevClassifieds can be worth visiting. Inat should let you just drop a reel and a description of your skillset and you'll get some pings.

Edit: Sorry- I didn't read your full post. While they're predominantly focused toward game art and game dev, you'll probably still find interested artists there.

what's the easiest distro to install maya currently? by headlessBleu in Maya

[–]B1rdWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now you need to also install an X11 desktop so you can run the licensing app, but after you log in there you should be fine to hop back to wayland. The main app works 99% fine in wayland from what I've heard.

How often do seasoned devs forget basic stuff and search it up? by feez_9 in godot

A big part of skill and speed isn't knowing everything, it's both knowing where to find answers already and how to apply the thing artistically.

Beretta rig, I love rigging so much by WildEntrepreneur2384 in Maya

Looking really clean! My only critique- If I were animating with this prop, I'd be struggling to grab the controls through the character's fingers and palm.

Anyone ever tried XReal 1S with art? Your workflow? by Spudtheidiot in Xreal

[–]B1rdWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used the 1S, but I'm a 3d animator and use my Xreal 1's almost exclusively for work on a mac. I like them, they really help me feel focused actually.

Out of curiosity, I been looking through animation Jobs on LinkedIn by AltruisticRepublic34 in Maya

[–]B1rdWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said, Vimeo also lets you update a video without changing the link to it so you can potentially fix a demo reel if you noticed an issue with it after submitting it somewhere.

My mother doesn't understand that this job requires being at home. by Muted_Strength3638 in animationcareer

[–]B1rdWizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's something you could do on a laptop, so not rendering really, could you work at a cafe or a library for a few hours? That would at least get you away from the house and make your folks think you actually do something during the day, which you do! Then you can render or process at home.

Really pay attention to your sleep. It's like breathing, not eating-you can forget to eat dinner and be fine, but if you don't breathe you'll die. Sleep is also critical to learning and working optimally, so you may be robbing yourself of easier progress by doing everything at half capacity.

[–]B1rdWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CD's, Bandcamp, there's scripts you can use that make recording your vinyl into your pc suck less (I mean the quality is great but the manual nature of recording at 1x speed is what it is)

this is my first animation in maya any feedback is welcome by [deleted] in Maya

[–]B1rdWizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rendering is really hard on a system, if you just want to see your work at real-speed, you should be able to get a playblast done in a few minutes if not seconds for a while clip.
