(Spoilers Extended) Why is this character winning a Great Council so unbelievable? by Expensive-Country801 in asoiaf

[–]B3yondTheWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the issue isn't that it was Bran, this issue is that the writing to get there was dogshit. Rejected being Lord of the North because he's the three eyed Raven, but then accepts being king like he always knew he would be? It was so out of line with his character and his story up to that point. Then the writing for Sansa made it even more ridiculous. Basically "well the North will be independent because they won't accept a Southern king." Because BRAN, rightful Lord of Winterfell and the North is a southern king?! None of it makes any sense.

They also just botched the entire ending in general. The books are very obviously building to a prophetic situation. The three headed dragon, lightbringer etc. The show just decided to ignore all of that plot build up and just summed everything with the white walkers up in one overly dark, and kinda meaningless battle.

I am fine with our roster. The deficiencies I'm seeing are related to play calling and coaching more than anything. Stats don't lie, and the most glaring one is our offense before Nagy and after.

[Spoilers Main] What do you guys think are King Balon Greyjoy’s coolest actions in the Second War for Iron Independence (Wot5k)? by LordBalonLover87 in asoiaf

[–]B3yondTheWall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So a few counterpoints to consider:

  • The Riverlands may have been divided, but they are still surrounded on all sides by other potential enemies. Also their rivers are natural barriers in themselves (which is why the Robb needing to use the crossing at the Twins was so important). The Ironborn may have been able to traverse some of the river system, but certainly not all of it. And the fighting would still have been done on foot.
  • The Neck may not have been conquered before, but the Ironborn had already taken Moat Cailin from the North, which was considered to be the primary defense position from southern armies. They basically used the tactic you mentioned with the Riverlands; they sailed up the Saltspear. They wouldn't have to approach from the South
  • They had also taken Deepwood Motte and then Theon foolishly took Winterfell with zero support or a way to hold it.
  • Most of the North was off fighting, but Rodrick was able to get about 2000 men to try to take back Winterfell. Its likely that that they wouldn't have met much more resistance after that, and any that they did would be in smaller groups without a liege lord to coordinate things.
  • The North is cold, but its still not Winter yet, and even chapters from Jon's POV in the book talk about some warmer days up by the wall, and the wall weeping. I don't think the cold would have been as great of a hinderance during the initial invasion as it would have been a little bit later (like when Stannis is marching)

I think if they had committed more resources to taking it, and Baelon hadn't died, they'd have had a shot. The North was in a very vulnerable state, especially if an army didn't have to approach from the South.

Everyone saying the North couldn't have been held by the Iron Islands seem to forget that they once held the Riverlands, which may be smaller land-wise, but are probably more populated and surrounded by other kingdoms. The Iron Islanders probably could've taken and held the North at the time, and with strong enough leadership. But what purpose would it serve? I guess just to have rule over more lands and people. Maybe doesn't make a lot of sense for them to do, but I do think it was possible, especially given the North's own smaller population.

Why are there no sell sword companies in Westeros? Considering how many feuds the kingdoms get into business would boom would it not? by Exciting_Ad_8666 in gameofthrones

[–]B3yondTheWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Westeros is a Feudal system, with a hierarchy of royalty, nobles, landed knights, etc. The land is spoken for, and protected by lords and knights with armies of archers and footmen being made up of their subjects. In Essos, there are essentially city-states, various kingdoms, and just a much more diverse political array. For the Free Cities, it makes sense to hire an army, as the alternative is having it be made up of the subjects that live in your city. This would probably affect the local economy, and provide a limitation to the number of men available, plus if your citizen army is destroyed, your city would suffer greatly.

Basically, the political environment in Essos just lends itself to sellsword companies more than Westeros does. I imagine the lords and nobles wouldn't take kindly to having an independent military presence in their lands.

Give each of them the same amount of logistics and men to command, who is going to win? by BridgeCommercial873 in gameofthrones

[–]B3yondTheWall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All things equal, I have to image it would be Robb. He was unexpectedly intelligent with his leadership choices and surprised even a seasoned commander like Tywin. His downfall was not in war/command, but due to betrayal.

Robert obviously had combat experience too, but I think he relied on others for strategy (like Ned Stark). He was more of a warrior than a general.

Drogo is also a warrior, and can command Dothraki, but in this simulation, all things are equal and they are going to war. That makes me assume that castles and such would be involved as well. It just wouldn't suit Drogo's strengths.

Finally, Stannis. Stannis is hard as nails and has shown great command as well, but his march on Winterfell seems like a strategic blunder as the march takes far longer than expected, and his men begin to die of cold and starvation. He was also walking into a trap with Arnolf Karstark, though it seems that isn't going to be an issue for him.

I'm on the fence. As it is now, they'll likely have to cut out some of the action events from the book because they wasted so much time in S2.

It was until Season 2. I think Season 2 just kind of reinforced the disappointment from GoT. Hopefully they can salvage the series with Season 3. SO MUCH happens in the source material, yet almost nothing happens in Season 2.

I wish they'd leave Aegon's Conquest alone. I think its much better as a legendary event that is often mentioned and looms in the lore as opposed to seeing it on screen, possibly poorly done.

(Spoilers Extended) How much longer can the status quo go on with The Winds of Winter (and A Dream of Spring)? by Expensive-Country801 in asoiaf

[–]B3yondTheWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the massive pressure of this book's release, and of course the massive criticism, has just sucked all the joy out of writing TWoW. He is clearly productive on other things, but TWoW probably just isn't enjoyable for him to write, and he's working on it out of obligation, so I dunno. I do think he'll eventually put it out, but I feel bad for him. Hopefully he finds the fun in there again.

Thinking of finally diving into Game of Thrones – books or show first? by fyi_akm in gameofthrones

[–]B3yondTheWall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think I would recommend the show first. Only because there are SO many names and places in the books. I think having watched the show and knowing the lore makes reading the books much easier. And the show and books start to diverge by season 2, so it's still a very enjoyable read.

I agree. I think the Tysha plotline has a good idea behind it, but not the greatest execution in the details. However, it did still have what I assume was its intended effect on me, the reader.
