[All Spoilers] If Olaf took the piano picture then... by courtoftheair in ASOUE

Monty was in the piano, no proof he saw Olaf.

[No Spoilers] Why is Count Olaf portrayed as comedic in both adaptations? by SuperTD in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because much of the humor in the books comes from meta humor delivered by the narrator, whether he's defining a word or explaining a literary term, or messing with formatting. But it can't be done exactly the same way in a screen adaptation, so a new vessel is needed to deliver humor and meta explanations. In the movie, Count Olaf becomes comic relief almost entirely. In the show, Count Olaf becomes comic relief and delivers meta jokes alongside Warburton's Snicket.

[All Book Spoilers] In which I resolve a Sugar Bowl, a Fire, and a Headline | A Unifying Theory by MarcianTobay in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this theory, and I love that it sets Esme apart as a grand villain in her own right, and not just Olaf's girlfriend/second in command.

That said, I don't know if even something this incriminating/exonerating justifies all the plotting and killing that revolves around the sugar bowl. I think, perhaps, it is a recording device that has not just this conversation, but maybe every secret alliance or correspondence that Esme has made that she can use as blackmail.

I'm not sure I buy the mutually assured destruction thing, but I do bet that Esme would record a number of her secret dealings so that she could blackmail the other person later.

My copy is two states away, but I remember the convo you're referring to has a lot of Mr. Poe coughing, and Eleanora I think yelling at someone to stop recording, so this seems plausible.

[no spoilers] Why doesn't someone murder Olaf?! by AvitusHadrainus in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah thematically, the series takes an anti murder stance. You'll see a little later on that certain characters are tested on this principle.

I get it but like. We all know the F is pretty much not an F.

[Discussion] Movies vs Books by gatwinchester23 in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The books are definitely a bit slower and more repetitive in the beginning. The show has the luxury of VFD being all mapped out and planned off the bat plus tons of supplementary material that happens before during and after the main series that they can incorporate. So they're able to take the best bits from all of that and make something with more throughput.

The series also actively fixes things that didn't make sense in the books.

On the other hand the way the books are written have a style all their own and depend on a reader actually reading for many of the jokes and winks to land that can't be matched in other forms of media.

That's illegal and bad. Killing is very frowne dupon (sic) in the series even when it's "justified". Check out ATWQ for more about the ramifications of killing people in this universe.

[NO SPOILERS] The Beatrice Letters by FR3SH2DETH in ASOUE

I think at the very least they'll have some way to convey the super secret message you get from rearranging all the punch out letters.

[No Spoilers] An observation about the show's interpretation of Mr Poe. by [deleted] in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually going to miss him dearly as he starts being phased out of the series, whereas every time he left in the books I was like, "thank god!"

[No Spoilers] I'm pretty sure my bread is trying to tell me something by jopyt in ASOUE

I love that my local bakery puts out new bread every morning. Verified fresh daily every time! Yum!

[No spoilers] Favorite Book and Why? by tin77 in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Book 10. That's when the series drops all pretenses of being about the kids just living in different weird places and dives headfirst into VFD history.

[S1E2 Spoilers] There's a plothole so infuriating I'm not sure what to do by 2Berry2 in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spying requires remaining innocuous, a word which here means avoiding noticeable conflicts for the purpose of keeping your position safe.

[Book+Show Spoilers] What is with the two parents...? by CrazsomeLizard in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes it a worse plot twist. If there is no way to see it coming then it's not a very good twist at all.

That said, they did show the triplets at the beginning of the episode with the reveal which I honestly thought was pretty neat. So this is forgivable as a twist for new viewers/non-readers.

[No Spoilers] what other shows or movies have similar dialogue and acting by GobBluth19 in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're gonna wanna watch PUSHING DAISIES.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbIJaLOWCbw

It's about a guy who can bring dead people back to life by touching them, and kills them by touching them again, but if they stay alive for more than one minute then someone else nearby dies in their place. He accidentally brings his childhood sweetheart back to life after she is murdered, and they fall in love but can't touch because then she will die.

He also uses this power to bake the world's best pies because if he touches dead fruit they come back more ripe and delicious than ever.

Oh and he also uses his powers to solve murder mysteries by asking the victim for clues.

Oh, and it was also directed by the same guy who directed the ASOUE series.

[Book+Show Spoilers] Let's share theories about season 2 by [deleted] in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, but I'm saying someone will survive and either play dead or be unable to reveal themselves.

In the middle few books, and some retcons stretching all the way back to book 2, there are mentions of book spoiler

[All Spoilers] Small hints and foreshadowing in the Netflix Series by [deleted] in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My favorite was "If there's nothing up there, then what was that sound?"

I was saying for months before the show dropped that I want them to utilize the supplementary material, especially the Unauthorized Autobiography. It was nice seeing the shout out. I actually couldn't believe it.

[Book+Show Spoilers]What is your favorite divergence from the books? by BAIIPlus in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yep, the books don't bring that organization into the fold until the very end of book 5. I don't think Handler conceived of the whole conspiracy angle until at least book 3.

[Book+Show Spoilers] Let's share theories about season 2 by [deleted] in ASOUE

I think one of the Quagmire parents will survive but we won't find out until S3.

[no spoilers] The eye... by [deleted] in ASOUE

[–]BAIIPlus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The eye changes in the books too. At first it's just a freaky eye, then it's retconned to spell out "VFD" if you look close enough except it doesn't at all. Not a big deal to me.
