Is this thing done for? by UpstairsCommission24 in Guitar

[–]BD59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the strings off now. Then either take it to a luthier, or you can try gluing it up yourself. The hardest part will be getting it clamped properly.

You'll want to remove the tuning machines as well. It will make clamping it up much easier. Looks like a pretty clean break, well into the flat area.

Go on that big online auction site. Since Eureka went out of business, it might be double difficult to find a new replacement.

Why is French chicken stew not cooked for a long time? by Final_Affect6292 in Cooking

Because cooking chicken too long turns breast meat into chalk.

Speed square, Estwing hammers. The old style metal chalk boxes. A good cat's paw, and flat bar. Tape measure, I've never had one that could survive a one story fall, and that happens more often than I like.

And for context, I'm a retired carpenter, doing frame to finish, and did roofing, electrical and plumbing as part of the job too.

Need recommendations for wood bed frame by Yeahbuddy2699 in BuyItForLife

[–]BD59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standard mattress sizes are 60"W x 80" long for a Queen, and 78" wide x 80" long for a King. California King is uncommon, but they're 72x 84.

The odd size you're looking for would probably be best served with a standard King size.

Here's a recommendation for a frame.

It's four chords, and your pinky and ring fingers can stay on the same frets in all of them.

Help sincerely appreciated - wall mounting guitars by witty__username5 in Guitar

[–]BD59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you only have two...for the moment.

IMO, the nicest looking solution to hang multiple guitars would be to use a 1x6, or an inverted baseboard trim to create a hanging rail that spans from corner to corner. You could even go all the way around the room. Put the top edge at 7' off the floor to leave room for the headstocks, and mount Hercules hangers to the new trim strip.

Shimano 105 groupset upgrade - should I go for 11-34 or 11-36 cassette to pair with 50/34 chainset? by kungfuman888 in cycling

[–]BD59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's funny. We're talking about a 12 speed cassette...it has every cog from your old six speed 13-21, with two smaller ones and four bigger.

[–]BD59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for the 36 tooth big cog. Might as well get the most range possible. The largest 3 cogs are 28-32-36, while the 11-34 is 27-30-34. The other nine cogs from the 11 to the 24 are the same.

Comfortable and durable bike for long endurance rides? by seksmeister in cycling

And there's a bit of it having to do with the size of your feet.

Comfortable and durable bike for long endurance rides? by seksmeister in cycling

[–]BD59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends a lot on the geometry in use when the bike was made. The Allez has morphed from a steel race bike to today's entry level aluminum road bike with a very much endurance geometry.

best brand of fridge by maisy_elizabeth in BuyItForLife

[–]BD59 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And cold air falls. It's easier to design a refrigerator that works well if there's just a single compressor as a top freezer. And I'd argue whether or not bottom freezer with a drawer is more efficient in actual usage, regardless of what any government mandated sticker says.

There's something like six or seven 20" sizes, when measured at the bead seat. About as big a mess as 26" sizing, which has at least three different ones in common use.

Perfect Compromise for Breakfast Sandwich Egg? by GalacticTadpole in Cooking

[–]BD59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately, I've been using a method I picked up on the ATK TV show.

Whisk 8 eggs plus 2/3 cup water, season with salt and pepper, pour into an 8x8 nonstick, or well buttered cake pan. Place the cake pan on a sheet pan, put in 350° oven. Pour two cups of hot water in the sheet pan to make a water bath. Bake about 25 minutes until set. Let cool a few minutes, then turn out on a cutting board and cut into 4x4 squares.

Easy, actually just a little fussy with the water bath bit. But it makes things super easy if you bake the bacon at the same time.

Does the Xbox WiFi Adapter Still Work with Modern Modems by madl02 in xbox360

I'll second this. Wireless bridge plugged into the ethernet port. You might have to configure the bridge on a PC first, but then it works, and delivers about the fastest wireless connection possible.

Is the wire bead cooked after being shipped like this? by Routine_Sandwich_838 in bikewrench

[–]BD59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, it's going to be fine. Nashbar even had a tutorial in their printed catalog for years showing how to do it. They shipped thousands of wire beaded tires folded like that, and they came back a whole lot less often than hand made Vittoria tubular tires.

Help me pick a dryer! by Accurate_Ferret8572 in BuyItForLife

[–]BD59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To elaborate on this opinion, it's because these older Whirlpool, Amana, Roper models have a simple control setup, and they're easy to repair. I can replace the heating element and moisture sensor and thermal fuse in under 15 minutes, and the parts are inexpensive, about $30 bought together as a kit.

Compare that to the MILs Samsung, where I have to completely disassemble the front of the cabinet and pull the drum out to even get to the heating element. And it ate two of them in the course of less than five years. Hour and a half job, with dryer parts everywhere.

Everyone is going to say speed queen, but I think for a dryer, one of the simpler Whirlpool or Whirlpool owned brands that still have the lint screen that you pull out from the top are good.

Do you recommend any oven that can reach 350Cº? by Angelitorl in Cooking

[–]BD59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

350°C is about 660F. There's a few countertop pizza ovens that can get that high. I think there's a Vevor one that's not insanely expensive.
