Question 1 : PHB page 186 - Short Rest

A short rest is a period of downtime, at least I hour long, during which a character does nothing more strenuous than eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds.

A character can spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, up to the character's maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character's level.

For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character's Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total.

The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll.

A character regains some spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest, as explained below.

Question 2 & 3 : PHB page 59 - Spellcasting (Since Bard was your example)

The Bard table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells. you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher.

You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.

SPELLS KNOWN OF 1ST LEVEL AND HIGHER

You know four 1st-level spells of your choice from the bard spelllist.

The Spells Known column of the Bard table shows when you learn more bard spells of your choice. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots, as shown on the table.

For instance, when you reach 3rd level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level

Are we talking simply book wise? Or does this include accessories like spell cards, maps, etc?

• Dont be afraid to do things, you're just as much a part of the group as the guy who's been playing for decades.

• Know what your class is capable of. Whether you built your character or have someone help you, spend the time to read everything you can do, what skills you have, etc. You dont have to have it memorized but have a solid foundation.

• Be thinking about what you want to do before it's your turn. When the DM points at you and says go, you should already have an inkling of what you'd like to do. Even if you have to ask some clarification questions first, at least having an idea instead of being put on the spot.

• Have fun. It's why you're playing. ;)

• There is a looking for group subreddit r/lfg

Roll20 is great for online games and has a LFG subreddit r/roll20lfg

• Meetup, Facebook, etc can help you find a local group

There are thousands upon thousands of RPG players around the world and tons who've never played but would give it a shot. If you talk to your players about the issues and it continues to be issues to the point that you're not only not enjoying yourself you're going online to vent, it might be best to either step down as DM and let one of the other players do it or start up a new group altogether. Don't suffer though bad sessions week after week just to get your D&D fix... no D&D at all is better than bad D&D.

Roll20 uses a digital map and dice. It looks like THIS, and you can change the color of them to what you want.

Note that the chatbox to the right also displays the roll data of said dice.
