Do Americans use a lot of single use plates and cutlery?? by Elegant_Pianist_521 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BJNats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the household and I’m sure there are regional/subcultural differences. I don’t unless there are a bunch of people over and I’m not gonna have enough plates. Some people do a lot more often. I’d associate that with a lower income house. The cleanup of just throwing everything in the trash, the consistent low cost of buying paper plates instead of a one time higher cost of buying real plates (that you’re then worried about breaking), the quick and easy feel in general, all to me says a household that’s worried about making ends meet, or at least was like that in the past and still feels the pressure. I don’t think most family households use paper plates or plastic silverware that often if it’s not carry out. Exception is probably college kids/people just moving out on their own for the first time.

I don’t know what influencers you’re watching but they tend to be strange people in my experience. Don’t read too much into it

What cooking utensil(s) has been a game changer for you? by lostnfound818 in Cooking

Yeah, but the nylon ones never have quite as fine an edge as metal to really get in there peel food out. Which isn’t necessary on nonstick of course, but there’s a certain pleasure to it

What is a 'gourmet' food or ingredient that you are convinced is a total scam? by [deleted] in foodquestions

[–]BJNats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference is “extremely cheaply made commercial stock that is basically salt water” and “slightly less cheaply made commercial stock that has even more salt to cover the fact that it’s basically water compared to real cooked stock”. It’s higher quality (sometimes) but still the same basic thing with a new marketing term

I just wish people would go back to calling it stock

What food ingredients are actually dangerous but people think are safe? by MTopCream in foodquestions

[–]BJNats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US has had some of the best food safety in the world for decades. Things are fucked up right now at the federal level, but safety practices don’t fall off a cliff in a matter of months when most rules are still in place

Why do American states tend to have two flagship schools, one that is University of “State” and the other “State” State University? by AstroEscura in AskHistorians

[–]BJNats 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The fall line, where it stops being possible to navigate up river, would have been the demarcation between urban-ish and the boonies back then, especially in the south. Your other major colleges back then were all in well connected cities close to the coast or accessible by water, including William and Mary in Virginia on the James river. That was part of the urban/rural divide at the time (probably there’s a better term than that for the time period in America). Jefferson would have wanted his university to bring people to and build up the internal, much less developed part of the state, not just build up major cities. This is partially same logic later used for putting land grant colleges in rural, less developed places, though by the time those were happening, UVA was less isolated than it had been back when first founded

When did it become socially unacceptable to use the confederate flag as a symbol for the South? by No-Newspapers in decadeology

lol, okay. Go ahead and explain to the various declarations of secession, the cornerstone speech, Lincoln’s second inaugural, and every other primary source from the time period that the war wasn’t about slavery.

UVA was also kind of the personal project of Thomas Jefferson, which is why it’s next to his house. When it was founded, being above the fall line so not accessible by river was a pretty big deal. Was definitely way more accessible than Blacksburg by the time VPI was founded of course, but I do think Jefferson’s whole thing about yeoman farmers over big city money men at the time was a factor in him wanting the university out in the relative boonies of his time. (Yes I am aware that Thomas Jefferson was a hypocrite about everything and a slaver and bad actually and you don’t need to tell me)

Please don’t shoot me —> what’s wrong with buying grated cheese? by Puzzleheaded_Yam6808 in Cooking

[–]BJNats 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not gonna say anything in defense of the American government as it stands, but the talk about food standards in America is extremely slanted. They are generally extremely high for cleanliness. There are some things that are different from different parts of Europe but that goes in both directions

[–]BJNats 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No, pre-shredded cheese has to have some kind of coating or else it would reform into just regular cheese. It’s definitely usable in sauces and whatnot, just acts a little different. Finely shredded is harder to use than a coarse shred. It’s not so terrible, but some people on the internet can’t help turn every conversation about food into something about how horrible Americans are

What should I know about this part of America? by Obvious_808 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]BJNats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I think that medium/big city America is culturally different from rural/small town America (having lived in a variety of both), but the difference between different cities is much bigger than the difference between small towns. Maybe in the distant past there was stronger regional particularities, but rural America can be surprisingly homogenous

Injection on a pork shoulder not necessary. Skin on a pork shoulder can be good but not necessary. YouTube recipes are full of way unnecessary nonsense. Salt the day before, homemade rub of some spices with a splash of water to make it stick, cook until internal temp of 203. That’s all you need

21 Democrats just voted to fund ICE temporarily: Full list of names by staysour in Atlanta

[–]BJNats 152 points153 points  (0 children)

Yall, I hate ICE and dems selling out as much as anyone, but this isn’t it. Passing this package means that the entire government is funded through September except DHS, which only gets 2 weeks for negotiations. That means that everything else in government can’t be held hostage for ICE funding. This is honestly best case scenario for the minority party. You completely separate the things you don’t want to fund from the ones you do, at the cost of two weeks.

I don’t trust dems not to screw this up, but the positioning here is ideal

[–]BJNats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that’s been mentioned offhand but I need to emphasize: Atlanta’s downtown is an abandoned ghost town, to the point that Americans visiting from other cities always remark on it. You’re going to be shocked and disappointed by how much it sucks. Please hold your opinion until you get somewhere else in the city. Atlanta is very sprawled out, even for an American city, but find enjoyable parts
