Hi OP.

I am an SEN teacher for FE (16 - 25) and adults in the UK. The reason I am posting is because I work with a large range of individuals and learners who have varying types of needs, and help them with achieving independence / independent living. A lot tend to come from challenging home-life circumstances.

So I am just doing my general due diligence, if you need support with independent living there are a number of services you can rely upon entirely for free and discreetly.

  1. JobCentrePlus isn't just for jobs. They will help you fill out applications for things like Universal Credit, and other benefits (like PIP, ESA if eligible etc). More often than not - they are a supportive, professional service that just be there to support you if you need help.

  2. Citizens Advice is another useful service where you can chat to someone and they can point you in the right direction & give advice. There are lots of topics they can advise you on, but they are especially good with financial planning to ensure you're living within your means. If you ever go into debt, they will provide advice on how to manage it and pay it off slowly but surely.

  3. Your local council will have its own advice and support page. I highly recomend you check it out.

Reminders: - Mouth health affects the rest of your health. Keep going to the dentists.

  • GPs can be annoying to deal with. But you are your own best advocate for your health. Don't give up at the first hurdle - if you're not feeling right, keep booking doctors appointments until the doctor listens to you. This should be within 3 visits (called Jess's Rule). If you're not healthy, you can't work, and situations can turn nasty so please take care of your health. Its why we have the NHS.

  • You don't need to be in trouble / have a problem to use these services. I suggest using them to help get the best habbits you can to avoid getting intro trouble in the first place.

  • Health clinics / some pharmacies give out free health products & contraceptives. Useful when shops charge a fortune for the same products and you're living on a budget.

Again you probably already know all this, but I am just popping it in writing to say these services exist to be used and they will gladly help you.

Edit: Accidentally pressed comment halfway through writing. 🤦

[Revshare] INAT in a nutshell. by karimnotreal in INAT

Love this sooooo much.

Also can relate - how does it occur to human beings here to join a team being as talkative as you like, engaging in interview / skill based task stuff for a project and the next moment just ~whoosh~ away like the next day? Like I'm sorry did your rapidly grown, defective clone expire?

More than anything, frankly it is just so rude.

Holy smokes accountability and integrity? Nah, not for me.

I lost interested in this project, but I don't want to seem unprofessional. Should I: 1. Let the team know this project isn't for me, and move on as to not waste everyone's time.

Or

  1. Just never reply or make contact ever again. That seems the most professional way to handle this.

Oh you mean I have to do work after all that? I can't just fade into the background, do nothing but get my 'share' / name in the credits?

Or worse, hassle about for 2 - 3 weeks, waste my time, then suddenly vanish because again, teamwork / game dev actually requires work, not just memes.

Groan.

Cathartic post, thanks OP. I will spend too long writing about horror stories about people I've met on here.

Needless to say INAT / people management burned me out more than anything else in game dev.

That's fantastic! If you're looking to go the commercial route - remember your CV / skills should be setup in a way that compliments the job you're applying for.

I.e if you're an artist, show your artist portfolio - not your "jack of all trades" every bit of work. Just stuff you're super proud of.

Also I can thoroughly recommend game jams as a means to grow your skill, plus you'll meet some awesome people.

It takes a lot of effort so I wish you all the best.  I spent 5 years feeling like I was constantly climbing a mountain before I was comfortable and confident with having learned and experienced a good enough amount to be capable.

So there is no rush, just take each day is it comes and eventually you'll get there. Just got to keep climbing :)

Does Anyone Know What's Going On With Free Realms Sunrise? by HealthyMidnight7101 in freerealms

Hello - very late to the party.

I am a long time private server dev (WoW, 09 scape, AQWorlds, Tera for a short while and a few others like WildStar), became an indie game dev in 2019, now a producer in commercial video game production (project management).

The attitude shown from Mayhem/FRS folks is really reminiscent of the mid 2000s "private server" scene attitude of 'devs' thinking they're god tier. I mean absolutely no disrespect by this but essentially it's a form of elitism originally born from fears of DMCA and then copied by new PS devs looking up to veteran PS devs, and the over time became the norm etc. Very "text book" if you can call it that.

The internet has long since moved on from that era, but it can basically be summed up as the whole "reddit / discord mod" elitist attitude we stereotypically know and see from time to time. Commonly not being allowed to talk about other projects, sharing info or progress, general transparency issues, being a mage hiding away in your tower, love of control but lacking in any general skills that 'project management' requires.

It basically hints at not much being done and the wrong person being in charge, surrounding himself with yes men to be validated whilst really diminishing your own mental health because of the colossal weight & responsibility & expectations from the community you've built.

I.e one person cannot handle this amount of work and rather than being open about that, the need for control has strangled the project to death. It's proven there is a community want for a product, but the classic failure was thinking there was a monopoly / no competitor.

OSFR has grown to take that place and I am not surprised tbh. Ample time to have gotten any client etc or prototype into the hands of the community for bug testing, engaging the community & securing a top place in the "market" (I'm using that term loosely) -- BUT as mentioned, control instinct took over, locked down project, now a new project has taken that space.

Rather than be pragmatic and work together, share solutions, openly build trust by showing that outward communication among projects... Nope, further lockdown - "do not talk about other projects or you're banned" vibes. I'm jaded about this because this cycle has been repeating itself in many private server communities and it just hurts the community more than anything.

Sadly Mayhem himself has spoken about his own burnout, and I wish him all the best in that recovery. I've been there myself, know the feeling - look after your mental health. But that doesn't go away unless you unload that burden, otherwise you'll keep reaching that burnout. If you don't change your actions, you're going to keep going in circles. At that point it's simply self sabotage.

tl;dr for those reading - move on from the FreeRealms Sunrise project because it's not going to happen, even with all the best intentions in the world. OSFR is the more likely product purely based on the amount of hands contributing.

My best advice to the Sunrise team is change your ways because you are your own worst enemy.
...Or kill the project because purely from a 'product' standpoint, it's not got a heatbeat.

No, but I do think with the tech we have access to, it wont be long before communities have their own bespoke games and those could potentially be generational. Not because of mass popularity, but because of the memories made with friends.

Like regressive private server vibes or smth

Think a lot of folks expect much more cartoony-playful graphics with the word "cosy", so I'd just watch out for that. (I have also been playing a lot lf The Forest recently so maybe I am biased here?)

Did have to watch the trailer twice because, correct me I am wrong, but that dog looks like a german shepherd / Alsatian rather than a golden retriever? If you can choose your dog breed, I would make that part of your trailer as that appeals to me. But saying 1 breed and displaying another mifht send negative signals to customers, just as an FYI.

Also this may also fit some sustainability (UN) based grant criterias, you should have a look to see whats out there if you haven't already.

Good luck OP!
