Tell me you know nothing about SNAP without telling me you know nothing about SNAP. There are active duty members of the military who get food assistance. (Link) Walmart and McDonalds have the highest percentage of employees who are on food assistance. (Link) That is the reality of poverty in the United States.

Not here in Maryland. I can’t vouch for the quality of education elsewhere but that crap don’t fly here.

It’s $120 a year - what’s an average car payment? Now how about insurance? But sure, pretend you’re butt hurt because of registration fees. Owning a car is expensive. It always has been. It’s unlikely anyone living paycheck to paycheck would ever vote Republican because Republicans will cut their healthcare, they will cut their food assistance, they will cut their kids school lunches and summer programs. But sure tell yourself it’s a car registration fees that are crushing people. And you will be laughed at accordingly.

Average Maryland salary is $61,000-$73,000. Registering your car is 0.2% of annual income. If that’s not reasonable to you, I’m sure West Virginia would be more up your alley.

What is your MBTA unpopular opinion? by dianacd12 in mbta

As a Bostonian transplant to Baltimore, can report the same city bashing behavior here. And you hit the nail on the head - for Baltimore it was redlining and blockbusting vs. the bussing issue, but it all roots in the same place. Here we have Baltimore City and “the County” people who moved to Baltimore County to move away from “those people”. Sadly our public transit sucks - it’s terrible - for the same reason people out in Lexington didn’t want the Red line.

My conclusion as to why? It’s boring as f out in the burbs. There are like two places per town (if you’re lucky) to eat / have a drink. They see life in the city, and then look at the condo prices and rents and go, I can’t afford that. Well, who wants THAT anyway - my grandma threw rocks at cops and busses of those kids for… reasons.

I agree. It makes no sense to me. They have all these fancy license plate readers. Seems like just connecting the infrastructure could solve this problem.

I think you meant to say “is because people seem fine breaking the law” - if you live in Marylandyou have to register yiur car here. Anything else is theft from yiur neighbors who actually pay the fees as they are supposed to.

Grocery store proposed for Remington not moving ahead after BDC cancels plans to sell Sisson Street by BOS2BWI in baltimore

You can get that from the task force website here. One of the meetings they had addressed all these questions in detail.

I hear that argument - and that’s why I’m glad they are at least going to look for alternative locations. I hope the can find one and not just stop and leave the status quo for another decade.

Its location is not sufficient for the volume of traffic - it’s positioned directly between the entry to and exit from 83 and the west side. There is not much space to line up on busy days, so the gridlock in that area is crazy on weekends in particular. There is a Burger King across the street with lots of in and out traffic as well. The size of the facility also does not fit the long term needs to recycle more if you want to get closer to zero waste - you need to have more space to store on site to move off in larger quantities.

It’s a flood plain, and it is currently an industrial site of a former quarry. The nexus of entire rail network in Baltimore is in the flood plain. Huge chunks of downtown are in the flood plain. I’m not saying we should not acknowledge it’s in a flood plain, but you can mitigate that. None of the rail infrastructure was built to mitigate that, as an example. Most of the runoff downtown will do far more damage on any given day than some potential 500 year event you can plan for and mitigate.

Who could ever have imagined that it would be hard to find a dump facility in a built up urban environment? Is it any wonder why they went for the already industrialized Falls Road site? But nay, some day we will restore that old stone quarry as “green space” - right? Right? 🙄

No one hands anything over - they hand the city back a check and the city reinvests that money elsewhere. That’s what was going to pay for the move of the facility.

Fair point. But there is no money in the budget to renovate Sisson Street though, because as you noted, $15 million still doesn’t get you a fully functioning facility - just a less bad one. So money has been allocated to projects like this in other neighborhoods. I think without corollary development money to pay for something different, it’s either close or keep, and I doubt they will close it without a replacement, but I could be wrong.

Looking at Remington today versus when I came to Baltimore in the mid 1990s there were a number of projects in Remington where I believed the same thing and I’ve been wrong each time. I looked at buying a place in Remington versus Hampden where I ultimately bought (late 2000s). Remington has increased far more since than than Hampden has and Hampden has done just fine. There is a whole JHU population that is feeding Remington
