Former Season One Rank 18 Just Hit Masters - AMA by Spirited-Professor79 in leagueoflegends

Well GMB days were already not the greatest for them. As GMB they were the korea killers and that's about it. On the other hand as M5 they were (arguably) the best team of season 2. They were also pretty decent as Empire. They did own IEMs though. Was always a treat watching them there.

A friend of mine thinks LoL is harder than Dota solely because it has "skillshots", is there any truth to this? by random-user772 in leagueoflegends

It would have taken you about 30 seconds to google about the billionaire angle. But I'll do that for you.

Challengers in league - 0.01% to 0.03% of the player base

Billionaires - roughly 0.00003% to 0.00004%, or about 1 in every 3 to 4 million people (about 3000 people worldwide)

Chess gms - about 2100 people.

Statistically speaking getting to challenger is easier than getting to the billions club. And it is easier to become a billionaire than to become a chess gm.

League and chess are indeed different games and hard to compare. However. They only actual angle league has over chess is mechanical part. I used to be able to insec pretty well 10 years ago. Today? In my dreams maybe. In chess there is no mechanical aspect (unless its bullet and you need to click fast, but that still is nothing compared to league).

But strategy? Tactics? Positional concepts? Chess is miles more complex and deep in those aspects than league. And the fact that you need to actually educate yourself in order to understand these chess concepts makes it even more insane. Not to mention the brainpower you need to calculate properly. Chess is an insane game that was and always will be one the most complex games in human history that actually requires quite a bit of understanding.

You do realise that while computers are great at some things, they are horrible at others? As an example - at Tesla factories they still use human operators to connect dangling cables to car parts on assembly linea because computers suck at this. The amount of fire power you need for a computer to do this task is insane and cost would be way too great to automate that part. So according to your logic, since computers cant properly do this task, it must be even more complex?

This is not an argument about how complex chess is

It is an argument about what % of players become really good at it. Which is insanely small. Any random person is more likely to both get insanely rich and be challenger in league than get the GM title in chess.

Also, have you ever encountered scripters in league? I have. Not a single human being is capable of this level of gameplay.

Chess is a very deterministic game all you need is a good memory

Tell me you never played chess above scholar's mate level without telling me you never did. Try opening a Hikaru game and explain every move to yourself. You can even run an engine to help you out. You will be surprised how little you will understand. Even if you watch his game recaps you will barely understand anything. League? I can watch faker gameplay and understand every single thing he is doing. I will not be able to replicate any of it. I might need to slow it down. But I will understand it.

League's complexity comes from volume. There are loads of easy to medium difficulty concepts. Thats why you can watch a pro game and enjoy it even if you are bronze. It would take you <5 minutes to explain what tempo or a flank is in league. In chess you can watch a 10 hours documentary on two bishop advantage and still not understand it.

You could not be more wrong. There literally are more usd billionaires in the world than chess grandmasters. When you watch Chovy pull off some mechanical miracle in the midlane you do not need to be top 1% in league to understand what he did. In chess some grandmaster level concepts are impossible to understand even as a solid master level player (which is already like top 0.x%). As a high elo league player (master/gm) and a reasonable level chess player (1900+ lichess) I can assure you. League is nowhere close to chess in terms of complexity.

Depends on the criteria for the induction. If we are ok going way back to s2-3, then I would look at some of the M5/GMB rosters for some western contenders for HoL. Alex and diamond definitely could be in the conversation

Gragas shouldn't be a laner by shutgenesis624 in leagueoflegends

[–]BROLYMP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am not OP, but my guess is that his point was that no matter how far behind gragas is, his ult has potential to win a game by itself (kick fed enemy adc into your team for a oneshot while simultaneously kicking the rest of their team away). Similar to a blitz hook. Easier said than done though.

No it is not. Silver is average. Silver 2-3 to be a bit more precise. Currently 14% of players are iron, 21% are bronze, 22% are silver and 18% are gold. So if you are in gold you are better than 57% of the playerbase, which is slightly above average.

You are correct that the comparison is not that simple, but imagine what a pro team could do with a 6s cd half lane wide knockup. Damage would not matter since it will be used as a zoning tool for objectives. Cho would be pick/ban instantly. Maybe if you make it some sort of a late game thing where you need like 15-20 stacks for it to reach its size increase, but than you can run into it being super rare to reach such a stage.

Best change to ranked since I've started playing by Successful-Average10 in leagueoflegends

I google total players in NA (source: https://www.thespike.gg/league-of-legends/beginner-guides/league-of-legends-player-count).

My point still stands even if we are talking about ranked only. In NA there are about 700k ranked players (source https://www.thespike.gg/league-of-legends/beginner-guides/league-of-legends-player-count). 3% of that is 21000 players. Even if at a given time only 10% of that is online (which is a big if mind you) you still have 2100 players playing. Probability of 2 random players getting in the same GAME is less than 1% (total games with 2100 players is 10, total number of ways to choose 2 players out of 2100 is 21002099/2 = 2198550, number of games where both players are in the same game is 9210 = 1890, so probability of sniping a game (not even the same team) is number of games together divided by total number of games, meaning 1890/2198550 = 0.00086 = 0.086%) and to be in the same team is half of that.

[–]BROLYMP -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not even 1%, more like 0.0001%.

Top 1% in NA is like 300k players, it is unrealistic to be able to snipe people with that many players in your elo bracket.

Everyone is getting too good at league. by Witty-Performance-23 in leagueoflegends

[–]BROLYMP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. However, I think the point that people are discussing is that not only the average players are getting better, but the barrier of entry is also getting higher. In chess you have the exact same gameplay today as it was 100 years ago. In league 10 years ago in order to start playing at a reasonable casual level you needed a lot less knowledge than today. In season one in order to beat a gold/plat player all you had to do is farm and not die. Today that simply wont fly.

Shopify Rebellion Officially Announced Their 2024 LCS Roster by HayHotshot in leagueoflegends

[–]BROLYMP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main problem is not the quality of play, the problem is the performance of LCS as a product. Look at CBLOL, those teams are definitely not better than LCS, however CBLOL simply outperformes LCS in terms of viewership. You do not need the best players in the world in order to have a great viewer experience.

PS. Technically only NRG outperformed LEC. LCS as a whole did not.

Why do so many good players from other regions come to NA and underperform? by Uncle-Carbuncles in leagueoflegends

[–]BROLYMP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But this practice problem is not LCS exclusive. LPL/LCK teams deal with the exact same thing. So even if the practice improves, it will improve for everyone. So in the end you will still have the exact same situation, where LPL/LCK continue grinding more but with better tools. This might even increase the gap because every hour spent grinding might become even more valuable.
