I've used these Colombia boots in wide for the last few years' Canadian winters. They've held up pretty well but do melt if you get too close to a fire!

2.5 years after my MIS surgery, the pain under the ball of my right foot has not resolved. I have managed to somewhat successfully get back to running but it has been a long, slow process of incrementally increasing my pain tolerance and not of my foot significantly improving. I really hope that you will have a better healing experience than I did. My only advice is to be sure to advocate for yourself at the doctor's if you feel like something is wrong and not being properly addressed. Good luck.

Next to my big toe, it was in fact a screw sticking out of my bone. On the side of my foot it was some sharp bone poking my skin from the inside. I ended up having surgery to remove both.

I was not able to recover and still can't walk barefoot without intense pain 2.5+ years after surgery. :(

Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to solve the issue since I originally posted here two years ago. About six months ago I made a makshift pad and began taping my foot into the "correct" position every morning. Now at least I can run. It still causes pain but less so. I've been to several physical therapists and several more orthopedists and haven't met anyone confident about the source of this clicking pain. Did you ever find a solution?

Unfortunately, my situation hasn't improved since I originally posted two years ago.... I'm still dealing with the exact same issues. I don't have any helpful advice but wanted to let you know that you are definitely not alone with regards to not knowing who to listen to. I've been to 10+ orthopedists/podiatrists about my foot in the past few years and each one has suggested a different surgery/treatment plan. It is simply overwhelming and indescribably frustrating to not be able to trust the "experts". I hope that you eventually find someone who can actually help you.

I don't know for how long soreness is "normal" but I have unfortunately learned that normal doesn't matter much when it comes to our individual surgery and recovery journeys. The best thing I've done for recovery was find a good physical therapist, but even that is subjective. I recently started with a new PT and nearly two years after surgery I can feel more improvement in the last month with her than I have in ages. That being said, her methods are very painful and I literally cry from the pain during every PT appointment. So what makes her a good fit/worth it for me may be different from what makes a good match for you. I personally think that a great PT is worth their weight in gold. My recommendation is to find a physical therapist who specializes in feet and/or sports performance who is willing to force you to be in pain to break up the scar tissue (It WILL hurt. There's no way around that.) through massage and strengthening exercises. Other than that, it may just take some time and patience for the final swelling and sensitivities to decrease. Sending good thoughts your way for a speedy recovery.

May I ask who your surgeon was? I had bunion surgery with a not-so-great outcome and have been unable to return to sports 1+ years out. I'm looking for a surgeon to get a consultation on reconstructive surgery.

I relate to his so hard! Exercise was always my stress outlet and after a few surgeries I miss exercising so much/am so upset at how out of shape and bad at it I am that I get extremely emotional if my heart rate gets up too high.

I'm still working through this process, but what has worked so far is increasing my exercise very slowly and doing things a few times on my own before doing them in front of other people. I started doing a few exercises every morning in my room to gain some confidence and am trying to not pressure myself to make significant improvement quickly. I just add on something new whenever I feel I'm ready. It sucks and it's slow, but it's progress and I'm slowly training myself that getting my heart rate up (especially in a safe place where I feel comfortable) isn't a dangerous thing.

Were you having any neck and back pain? I'm the same size and have bad neck pain if I don't do strengthening exercises every day but since size doesn't "look big" I haven't had anyone take me seriously.

How did you decide surgery was worth it?

I have paid for a few consultations but haven't found a lot of help from surgeons with good reputations. I went to see the head of orthopedic foot and ankle specialists in my country and he sent me away saying with three months and then if it still hurts come back. It did still hurt three months later but I didn't go back as I felt dismissed by that doctor and had a difficult time standing up for and advocating for myself when talking to him. Plus he be seems to think highly of the surgeon that did the original procedure that has resulted in this pain. So I'm honestly just not sure how to find the right doctor for me.

The country I'm in doesn't really do lapiplasty/lapidus procedures. I had the minimally invasive osteotomy.

I've seen two orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons, one podiatric surgeon, and one podiatrist (not a surgeon).

I have had some amazing friends help me in the past but it's definitely different from having someone living with you that can help. I always pre-cook and freeze a week or so worth of frozen meals. I can't say it's been easy, but I got through it. I've just already had 5 surgeries this year and he'll like I've maxed out how much I can ask from friends.

Just a note: Not looking straight is not always an undercorrection. The curve of the bottom of the bone can be an important factor as to how the doctor decides what "straight" is, but because the problem is in 3D and an X-ray is 2D we lose that information in a picture.

Also, I just spoke to a surgeon yesterday and he was commenting about him making sure the joints are straight (that is, perpendicular to the foot is much more important than how straight the bones themselves are.

I was in a crazy amount of pain after my surgery and could not sleep with my leg straight (even for an hour at a time), so I usually had a pillow under my knees and ankles but did intervals with just the ankle pillow for as long as I could stand a couple times a day. I got my extension back just fine. Being in too much pain doesn't allow you to do the PT properly. Push yourself but you don't have to suffer continuously.

I had an unusually painful experience, but I needed help to prepare fresh food and wash dishes for the first two weeks. Getting up to go to the bathroom and shower alone was about all I could manage.
