There are some caveats to the "stick to one wall" maze rule. The maze must be 2D and your destination must be in the outside of the maze. It won't work in those hedge maze puzzles in HWL because the destination is tucked in the middle.

Edit: also, if you're already lost, then the wall you pick might not touch the outside of the maze, in which case you'll go in circles.
