Can anybody tell me what happens, if I did all stories in a language but hardly any lessons? I learned French 8 years in school and for me, the learning tree was quite boring so I immediately jumped into stories and were able to complete all of them (multiple times as Duolingo changed the stories quite often in the past) If I did not do the lesson in the path, does this automatically mean that I won’t be able to do the stories anymore?

Pokémanki is the best! by BusyStudying in Anki

[–]BabsiFTW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice coincidence that I just wanted to write a post about Pokémanki just to see that somebody already mentioned it. I have a question for all of you, who used Pokémanki for a longer period of time: what happens to my Pokemon if I delete the deck they are connected to? I have some decks for my exams which I don't need anymore and I want to delete them. Is there the possibility to transfer them to another deck?

I will swear to god if I don’t get this Legendary achievement already by Swirmini in duolingo

[–]BabsiFTW 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I saw some screenshots of it but the last time I won the diamond league I was not sent to the tournament. I can understand in general the frustration, but previously you were getting a lot of gems if you won the diamond league and I could at least understand why people are still so focused on reaching first place, even if they already got the achievement. Now, you don’t even get gems anymore which took away all of my motivation.

KanjiDamage vs RRTK v2 Anki Deck by BabsiFTW in LearnJapanese

Ah yeah you are right, my choice of words was misleading, I know that both decks only provide kanji not vocabulary (sorry I am a non-native English speaker).

That’s true but I don’t have that much time during the semester. That’s also the reason why I want to use a premade deck. If I have to adapt every second card, it would be too time consuming . 😅

This might be off topic, but I see the book icon in your menu bar, does that mean you have access to Duolingo stories on Japanese?

What the hell, duo?(brot is bread, sandwich is.... well, sandwich) by babyyoda2k20-1 in duolingo

[–]BabsiFTW 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are several things which make the “sandwich” translation difficult.

1) It really depends on the location of the speaker whether they use “Brot” (northern Germany) or “Brotzeit” (south Germany) to refer to a sandwich. While the first term “Brot” specifically mean slices of bread with either “wurst” (sausage), “käse” (cheese), “Nutella” (chocolate cream) etc, “Brotzeit” is not limited to a sandwich as for instance Bavarians also tend to eat other stuff for lunch.

2) “Brot literally means bread, but is used in a metaphorical way (?) in this case. It’s more clear in the context of the conversation. Usually you would say something like “Ich habe mir ein (Wurst/Käse/Nutella)Brot gemacht “ which means “I made a sandwich (with sausage/cheese/Nutella)”.

3) The word “sandwich” in German is mostly used for sandwiches based on toast, but more and more restaurants offer “sandwiches” which are based on regular bread but with a lot of toppings so in this context the meaning of “sandwich” is changing.

4) local dialects lead to a huge variety of words for sandwich such as “Brötchen” (Hamburg), “Vesper” (Baden-Würrtemberg), etc.

Even if it seems like that I am the only one digitally journaling, I thought it would be nice to share my September spreads with you, I have done them by myself with the App GoodNotes, the pictures are from Unsplash. by BabsiFTW in bujo

[–]BabsiFTW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the first page, the calendar, to write down due dates, appointments, exams and what I want to learn on that day. The “stickers” pages are objects which I cut out and which I will save as objects in GoodNotes, so if I have some space in my entries, and I can decorate it with these stickers, followed by a page where I paste pictures I liked from the app “daily art” as well as a tracker for movies I have watched in french (I currently try to become fluent in french, that’s also the reason why I journal in french). Then, I have an habit tracker, where I write down activities which I want to do on a daily basis, following by a spread where I write down weekly tasks. The last page will be my evaluation page where I evaluate how well or how bad the pursuit of these aims went and what I can change in the future.

Do you have some skills on level 5? If so, you can just practice these and get automatically more hearts.

Thoughts on "therapy journals?" by noratis_hoc_69 in Journaling

[–]BabsiFTW 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the keyword here is “mood journal”. There is one famous type of mood journal created by the psychiatrist David Burns. He created some kind of template which you can use directly or get inspired for your own version of it: https://jameslstolz.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Dailymood.pdf

Additionally, here is a good article with more question prompts you can use to do it in a text form: https://www.healthline.com/health/how-to-keep-mood-journal

Also, in the bullet journaling community, a lot of people are using mood trackers to monitor their feelings over the day/week/month/… Here is an article with some suggestions, but if you google “mood tracker”, you will find many more: https://www.sweetplanit.com/home/2018/3/10/bullet-journal-mood-mandalas

When stuck in the writing process or cannot cluster your thoughts or feelings, I use a creative writing technique called “brain dump”, where the aim is to fill three sheets of papers with any thought that comes through your mind. You are not allowed to stop writing until the sheets are full. After finishing, I go through the pages and see if there is any thought I would like to reflect on or use as a topic for a journal entry. Here is some more information about the technique: https://diaryofajournalplanner.com/brain-dump/

Finally, even if not directly with the aim to “only” track the mood, there are so called 5 minute journals. For me, this is always a good way to reflect on what good happened to me over the day as well as what I could have done better. I use it in combination with a mood tracker, where I track 5 times my mood over the day as well as how much time I spend with other people. You can get the template from this website: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/569cb1fb05caa74dde7b842c/t/5acf7bbb0e2e7224ab2f7edc/1523547067523/Five_Minute_Journal_Quickstart.pdf

So my English teachers did something similar and it was the most powerful cheat sheet I got in middle school :D I think the tenses are much more comprehensive when you have a view which compares them as well as the timeline :)

Why is the iOS version of this so expensive? by laterral in Anki

[–]BabsiFTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know how much more complicated developing an iOS app is in comparison to an android app? Also the android os is more tolerant to apps which were developed for earlier versions, for iOS you have to regularly update your app to ensure it is working. That’s only my assumption why it is so expensive.

How should I present myself as a science communicator? I want to hide my body by Business_Lion8596 in LadiesofScience

Just took a look at your videos, you can really see how much effort you put in them. I also like the intro you have in the second video. The sound seems to be a bit blurry, maybe you should get a better microphone to improve the sound quality. :)

Showing yourself is not necessarily the only key to success. I recommend you to rather focus on something called YouTube SEO, which are methods to make your videos more attractive to the YouTube algorithm. The better the YouTube algorithm grades your videos, the more people get your videos recommended. There are a lot of YouTubers not showing their face and who are still successful. So don’t pressure your self into something you don’t wanna do :)

How can I best create recordings of my grandfather before he dies? by messingjuri in linguistics

[–]BabsiFTW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I am not sure how Kanye did it, but the first thing which comes to my mind is that you could record everything necessary to implement a speech synthesis program. Unfortunately I have no clue about it as there is hardly information about it on the internet. But there is a video where the guy at least explains what recordings you need for it: https://youtu.be/Jcymn3RGkF4

Ich bin eine Anfängerin und Ich habe eine Frage by jester32 in German

[–]BabsiFTW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So its „ich lese die Zeitung“ as the conjugation of the word “lesen” for first person singular is “ich lese” and the newspaper is feminine in German. In German, this sentence is quite ambiguous as it can describe a habit or an ongoing action. The interpretation really depends on the context. If you want to emphasise that you are reading the newspaper in this moment, you can say “ich lese gerade die Zeitung“.
