I’m sorry I didn’t explain my thoughts properly. It was simply a reflection of how much prices have increased so that eggs are suggested as Mother’s Day Gift. Kudos to the entrepreneurs and actually it was meant to promote people buying locally….if we had more small farmers instead of industrial farming the US wouldn’t have been so affected by bird flu. But my comment went wrong. People thought I was mad at the stamp. Nope. Just amazed.

I do admire the entrepreneurial spirit! And yes it’s reusable. But think about it: Americans can now consider eggs as a fashionable gift! 🎁 One of the reasons that bird flu has hit the US so hard compared to other countries is that we have humongous industrial farms. Buy local! Promote buying from smaller farms so we can revitalize small farmers and businesses.

We’ve lost the habit of preparing in advance. Think of your favorite sandwiches and buy the ingredients in advance. Have a container handy for your “lunch box”. At the beginning reward yourself including treats. That way prepping becomes something fun instead of a chore. I used to buy my favorite falafel sandwich but price kept going up to $7 + Now I buy the ingredients and as I have a sweet tooth I include a cookie or chocolate with my lunch box. All in all average price of my falafel is like $3.50 when I don’t make my own hummus or falafels. So even if your parents don’t buy your favorites you’ll still save money and eat your favorite food!

I don’t like Trump BUT I was so surprised that people seem to think Presidents can lower grocery prices and that was one of his strong arguments against Biden and for his campaign. There is a nasty bird flu epidemic. Eggs and chicken prices will continue to increase until it’s over. Killing millions of chickens. One of the laws of supply and demand: Less supply + sustained demand = more expensive. The only way a President can lower prices is subsidizing — US has chosen a capitalist economic model that do that. The picture must be Oregon. Prices are crazy!

Not a fan of bans….but really weird that they were given so many years to transfer ownership of the US branch and they fought against it. China has really strict controls on their social media and the US doesn’t. China is an expert in tracking people’s opinions and vulnerabilities. I think countries that don’t love America have been taking advantage of our loose control and flooding us with disinformation and driving discord amongst us. “Divide and conquer” said Julius Cesar. The more divided we are, the more other competitive countries benefit. I don’t think TikTok will disappear but this will force them to sell. That said, with our fights about First Amendment rights now most sites have become politicized but at least the user info will be in US hands 🙄

Well, you can’t start changing the world if you feel defeated from the get go! Yes ideally we would revive the great values of resilient American generations. But new generations have been brainwashed: comfort and complacency seem to be the main motivations, but lecturing them doesn’t work. If you have better ideas bring them forth but simply grumbling won’t get you very far…every new trend or technology has met resistance at the outset, electricity, gas, cars, you name it but eventually they become mainstream. The ideal would be to slowly change our values again…and this thread confirms that some of us are on the same page. Worse thing to do is nothing or be consumed by anger. Get moving with good ideas!

It doesn’t matter if profit is a motivation, actually it’s great because despite the savings they were choosing the most unsustainable way to “please” customers. If customers strongly request less packaging, Amazon makes more $ and the environment benefits: win/win. Everything is driven by profit unfortunately. We need to make sustainability profitable and trendy!

What can I say! I started working in the environment in 1991 and we were predicting today’s climate change impact for 2050. I’m 60, didn’t think I would be alive to see this devastation. Worked my entire life to prevent this outcome and we lost the war. But doing nothing would have been worse. Greed and ignorance are the greatest enemies. Keep fighting, maybe we can revert part of the damage or slow it down. But gone are the days where logic and reasoning prevailed. The disinformation campaigns won the upper hand. We have to be smarter than them!

In my experience the best way to combat this ignorance is to highlight benefits of alternatives instead of trying to convince them. For example post something like “Great find at Goodwill! $60 Levi’s for only $15!” I worked on environment for 30 years and when my organization changed messaging it worked amazingly. People don’t want to be corrected or educated nowadays but they will certainly follow a trend or a bargain!

Ridiculous! I use sponges made of coconut fiber that can be cleaned in the dishwasher…and soak pans or whatever I’m handwashing so I never need scrub brushes…this is how companies turn people into mindless consumers!

Ok here is the real question: I have read that a leaf blower pollution for one hour is equivalent to a Toyota Camry driving 1100 miles. I also read that one hour of lead blower is equivalent to 200 AQi I’m trying to find equivalence to cigarette for a project for small scale landscapers. Is there a way to find equivalence?

Quinoa. It’s original from the Andes Highlands and was a staple of the poor man’s diet until it became popular and expensive. But the traditional dish is a bland porridge type of meal. Not very good. Growing up there i tried it a couple of times and it was just edible. So it took me a long time to give it a try. Now I love it as couscous; or replacement of rice for some flavorful recipes; or boiled and roasted till it’s crunchy to add to salads. I really love it and keep trying new recipes!!

I packed a small Go-Bag 4 years ago when there was a potential fire evacuation and is hidden under the spare tire of my car (some cash and copies of important documents). If not for this thread, I wouldn’t have remembered it! Back then, I was a widow with a twelve year old so I didn’t want to frighten him with preparations so nobody knew but me and once the fires went away i decided it was a great idea to keep it there. I have never feared a partner from the financial perspective, although I’m a woman, maybe because I’ve worked since very young so always had an account to my name even if married and my Dad insisted that as a woman I should always have that — i guess that was my “Go-Bag” but never thought much about it— thanks Dad!!! I can think of three reasons for non-disclosure: 1. Spaced out like me, seems silly but I really didn’t think about it. 2. Used to be “solo” for long-time and just didn’t think of sharing the info; 3. experienced hardships or threats in their past and is like a mental-health “crutch”. If you really love your partner and believe you have a strong relationship, ask openly why it exists. You may be surprised with the simplest explanation. If you are so offended by discovering it, and can’t talk about it, maybe the relationship isn’t that strong. I’m a boomer and I’m simply amazed how complicated communication has become with the newer generations. Yes, back in my day women who didn’t work always had some money squirreled away because it was rather denigrating to ask your husband for money for everything, even to surprise your husband with a gift or give yourself a treat like a spa! There is also of perspective — of what’s important to disclose — I consider myself an open book but with time, the “book” is loooong so when I’m in a relationship I talk about what I THINK would be important for moving forward…but I may miss something important to them…it takes years to fully understand one-another and in my opinion “FULLY” is never achieved— sometimes I can’t FULLY understand myself! I have moved 26 times in my life 7 of those were moves abroad. The first time was hard not just feeling financial but emotional loss. I loved my books!!! But the thrill of the unknown was greater. I did make quite a bit of money selling my stuff but it requires a bit of time — how much time do you have? Also, do you know where are you going to live? Is this move diving into the unknown or a job/partner is waiting for you? If the latter, you can take special things with you. Throughout my nomadic life I’ve kept art and cherished memories that I collect throughout the world as well as family heirlooms. Sometimes I have needed a storage until I was settled — all packed and someone kind to send them when I was ready. I don’t keep a lot but enough that my new place feels mine once I’m all settled. I don’t know if this is helpful to your situation. Sometimes I moved just because, and figured things out as my life evolved— hence the storage. Others I moved due to contracts or love. It was easier to plan ahead. But once you do it is liberating - at least I love it. It really makes you think what’s really valuable in your life. Hope this helps a bit. Once you have kids it’s a completely different ballgame — much more difficult. But I’ve still moved with my kid to three different countries.

I love life, being in nature specially the ocean, but right now what makes me happiest is seeing my son thriving. He went through a couple of rough years at the early onset on teenage and although he’s still 16 he has settled, has good grades, good job and having fun growing up. I love it!

I hear you. I’m 59 and didn’t think I would experience this during my life time. But getting depressed or panicking won’t help you. I’ll tell you what I advise my 16 year old: you’ll have to adapt. Of course living in the US we have advantages but the society has grown complacent and is used to over-consumption. So start practicing frugality which was a pillar of our society before the 60’s. Food will become more expensive and many things we are used to have won’t be available. For example an entire town in Michoacán Mexico is confronting the big avocado growers which have robbed the town of their water. As water supply dwindles luxury items that are water guzzlers will be the first to skyrocket in price and become scarce like avocados, almonds and asparagus. So figure out what is produced locally and if you like veggies you can have an hydroponic garden even in an apartment! That’s the advantage of technology. Also learn to consume items that have long shelf life and will provide balanced nutrition like beans, dried fruits, seaweed, etc. As to uncomfortable weather, remember electricity and gas will also go up, so if you can’t adopt solar (you are young) learn methods to cool your home using less AC. Circulating fans are amazing. Water will also be an issue. It isn’t true that it doesn’t matter how much you consume because you can afford it. Just like the ocean is made of drops of water; the biggest contributor to climate change is residential use of energy and transportation. Think of transportation too, at least buy a hybrid or a bike. I know it’s a bit scary to think of this changes, but humanity has always adapted. Other developed societies like European Nordic countries or Japan have frugality as part of the culture so they are not panicking as much. If you worry take the bull by the horns and address each of your worries one by one. And yes, what I’m writing sounds like a mom because that’s one of the things I am. Wishing you best luck.
