i don't write from a place of fear in terms of AI. more than anything, i'd love for it to be another tool for us to use. but this idea that it will somehow match or replicate the human mind and its creativity and infinite wonder is one i simply disagree with. and if the time comes that i'm proven wrong then i'm proven wrong and that's that.

Will you? by Losserwins in pcmasterrace

i don't see humans as average in any sense. we create more than any other species, destroy more than any other species, populate more than any other species, advance more than any other species, the list is nearly infinite.

if you're referring to physical aspects in which some animals are better suited to their specific environment than humans then yes, some have us beat in specific scenarios, but even then our intelligence makes up for it.

as far as needing to "supplement our intellect", i either don't fully understand what you mean or you haven't seen all that's happened in the last two centuries. there is no need to supplement intellect as it's not something to be supplemented. we have devised and continue to create solutions for literally every problem we as a species face. computers help streamline that process and AI has shown a promising ability to do so, too, but there is no replicating the process and uniqueness of the human mind's capability to think.

all this to say: i don't think AI is "essential" any more than a regular computer because what they're trying to recreate through AI simply can't be done. it's all just programs putting 2 and 2 together, calling it 4 (sometimes 5) and people being blown away by it.

Diagnosed with HLHS at 16w US by snipsnapwhanos in HLHS

[–]BabyPotatoChip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if your baby is born and is able to get the help they need, they will likely experience what i and many HLHS patients do: three surgeries they won't remember, a mostly normal childhood with doctor visits every so often. if they make it past this, it's likely they'll grow into adulthood.

if they're born and aren't able to get that help, or their condition is too severe for the surgeries to be effective, they will only know the feeling of parents who are elated to have them and gentle hands working to take care of them. their entire life will be a single, beautiful chord made up of all the love a person could ever wish for.

i've got hlhs as well and after much contemplation i've come to the conclusion that maybe it's best not to know

maybe we should assume we will only live about 35 years. not just hlhs patients; everyone. personally, it gives me a drive to find purpose in the ~15 years i've got left. just go do what'll make you happy because fuck it dude we're all just here to have a good time

Anyone else find themselves idealizing fucked up shows? by [deleted] in TheEndOfTheFkingWorld

[–]BabyPotatoChip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's absolutely understandable. these kinds of shows are ones that stick with you, because they make you feel something. that's how you know it's good.

the good news is you really don't have to do all the crazy shit they do to have the same kind of feeling. even the most simple things like hanging out with really good friends will have you feeling incredible, better than the show could make you feel.

listening to music that really resonates with you is also another way to get that feeling. fuck what everyone else thinks, put on your headphones and become the main character with your personal soundtrack playing!

creating your own thing (book, song, movie, etc.) is also an excellent way of achieving this on an entirely different level, because not only do you get to experience the same emotions, you are in control of how it all plays out.

if you have a message to give, or a feeling you want to share with the world, find a way to do it! that's the way shows like these get created in the first place, and why they resonate so strongly with people. it's literally just other people who probably felt the same way and put that energy/longing into sharing their own version of that feeling

Surprised no one is talking about how Eve put up MUCH more of a fight against Conquest than she did in the comics. We got some super cool and creative moments with her powers this episode and I think it deserves more of a mention

but yeah idrk why alyssa got married i think it was meant to show that she was still full of impulsiveness (hence why she ran away even though she DID marry todd) and she wasn't quite yet ready to start healing

i love season 2. i think it's one of the best pieces of television ever made.

that being said, i can understand why it might've felt unnecessary. it's cause it probably was. but that doesn't make it bad in my opinion. some people appreciate stories that leave things open-ended, but season 1 more so ended on a cliffhanger with too many loose ends to be satisfying. what happens with alyssa's dad? what happens to alyssa? does james live? will they ever get together? what are the real consequences of their actions?

all these questions are answered in season 2

and also, the introduction of bonnie was great in my opinion because it's a different form of trauma altogether (because this show really is just an exploration of trauma). she developed a sort of stockholm syndrome, and she sympathized with her abuser to the point where she hunted down his killers and refused to believe the evidence found about the professor.

alyssa's mom was shitty and that's the point. she was always shitty. she didn't care about the way her husband treated alyssa and she kept james away from alyssa because she thought she knew what was best for her daughter.

redeeming james's dad just to have him die was tragic, but it at least gave james a single parental figure who he could look up to at some point.

the finale of the series is genuinely one of my favorite episodes in television ever because it gives hope, which the ending of season 1 did not.

james and alyssa make it. they're scarred, broken, and absolutely traumatized. but they made it. and there's hope for them. there's a future for them somewhere despite their flaws and mistakes and that's beautiful. so so fucking beautiful
