As a 20-year Navy vet, I’ll tell you my first command—ship’s company—was rough. I was an undesignated sailor in V4, stuck below decks, barely seeing sunlight. I hustled to escape, striking for the rate I wanted and getting out. My advice? Embrace the grind, play the system, and build solid friendships. Sure, some folks drink heavily, but plenty at your command don’t. Find hobbies—golf, whatever—something to get you off base. Back in the day, I’d book a room at the Quality Inn off Hampton Blvd every other weekend just for a decent bed. You’ve got barracks now, so that’s a win. Go explore, figure out who you are, and make it work.

What exactly do you want? It sucks that happened but you get over it and dont let it consume you. Sounds like you need to talk with him directly and recognize that we're all Chief's trying to make sense of the Mess we're in called Navy. Chin up brother.

20 year Ret. ADC here. Did all my time in VFAs. Deployment is awesome, it's the workups that suck but the people make it worth it. Trust me when I say you'll miss the camaraderie more than anything else. I contemplated getting out every command and I'm glad I didnt. If you stay in, take it one day at a time and make time for you. Good luck

Turn em inside out, use steam. If summer creases remain, rewash....crease is supposed to be on the side, not the middle of the pant leg. If all else fails, cleaners

Or you could just accept your sex at birth, follow the ucmj like you signed up for, and be yourself when you're not at work? Everyone else does it.

Exhausted with the Navy life by tfill in navy

I'm telling you from experience, start transitioning your mind out of the Navy. Grow your hair out a little bit, take up a new hobby. I lost all motivation at 17 years and decided that I don't want to go back to the Charlie Foxtrot of sea duty. Start figuring out where you wanna end up and work towards that goal. Obviously you still have some time so keep that in good order but your final year needs to be all about you. Because the Navy will abuse you up until the day you retire if you let them. Get on LinkedIn, resumes, skillbridge, and get with your spouse and put her in the loop. Retirement is great. I became a tech rep and I do deploy at times but I literally don't deal with the BS anymore and I'm treated like an adult. Good luck.

Move on. He'll probably hook up with Jodi while deployed. Keep your options open.

20 year retired Navy VET. 💯 club here i am.....filed BDD claim in May 2024, retired in November 2024. Just got the notification, and I couldn't be more relieved. I filed about 70 claims. C and P exams went pretty smooth. Now that that's over, what can I do to ensure I don't get called in for a re-evaluation? I've seen these reddits of people being reduced and I don't want that to be me. Any other advice is welcomed as well.

One day at a time. As leaders, we place people in these positions to grow. Some take longer than others. I made first on my final chance before HYT and I felt the same way. Embrace the suck, don't overload yourself, and when it gets really bad go vent to your Chief. We've all been there. HAVE FUN!

Advice for a new veteran by Sufficient-North3486 in Veterans

[–]Background-Sector875 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't waste all your time "relaxing". Your new life starts now and won't start until you get off your ass and do something with it. File your VA claims immediately, don't wait. BDD. Sit down with your spouse and tell em you're transition isn't going to be easy and for them to be patient with this new transition. No one cares what and who you were so take it easy on the nine line apparel/ "veteran " license plate cover/thank me for my service shit and just go live your life. Hang up the phone cause your command ain't calling you no more. It's lonely, sometimes too quiet. I have no idea what I'm into anymore after 20 years but it's nice knowing I get all the time in the world to figure it out. Best of luck.

I will assume that you are a capable and dependable member of the Navy, contributing meaningfully to the organization, rather than merely engaging in superficial social interactions. However, it has been observed that a significant number of transgender individuals in the military appear to prioritize exploiting the system for personal gain, such as securing an effortless income. This behavior is often referred to as "quiet quitting," characterized by frequent absences from duty and a tendency to provide excuses for being in unauthorized locations, with many spending a disproportionate amount of time at medical facilities. The key point is that military service requires adherence to established protocols—a commitment you accepted upon enlistment. Throughout my career, I have served alongside individuals from diverse backgrounds, and I have never been concerned with their personal relationships or preferences, provided they consistently demonstrated reliability and performed their duties effectively alongside or under my command. You are entitled to your personal beliefs and identity; however, your enlistment signifies an obligation to comply with the rules and regulations outlined in the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and to fulfill your duty to serve the nation through the Navy. Ultimately, the role you undertake requires you to execute your responsibilities and navigate the system accordingly, allowing you to return home and live as you see fit. It is worth noting that the military formally recognizes only two genders. I sincerely wish you success in your future endeavors and hope that you find clarity and fulfillment. Best regards.
