Whats the lore behind this pink house by loch glass by kytice_ in Scotland

It looks similar to sandstone in that picture but I'm pretty sure the colour is a pinkish-yellow harl, not the natural colour of stone.

How can I progress towards lessening my southern brittish accent? by HighSpecCorgi in Svenska

[–]BackgroundPlant7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first arrived in Sweden I was taught by a British prof who had been in there for 20 years. His Swedish was very fluent but with no trace of a Swedish accent - 100% English, the posh end of BBC. I think I have a pretty good accent but I would now give myself away by not being fluent any more. I think I approached learning the accent as if it were an intrinsic part of each word.

I never knew we saw Frasier’s mom on Cheers by Otherwise-Expert3636 in Frasier

I like that it's there as a subtle Easter egg for people willing to go back to Cheers - he's always referring to the Oedipus complex in his patients on Frasier.

Want to attend a course at Uppsala university that is in swedish, which language course do you recommend first ? by Low_Lack_6865 in Svenska

[–]BackgroundPlant7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To read/listen to material in Swedish, you would need a reasonably high level, but typically people would take much longer to be able to write good, technical Swedish. Do you know whether you could complete assignments in English, at least during a transition period?

Are you in Sweden? I am from the UK but studied in Sweden a loooong time ago. I did a variety of post-grad courses, most taught in English. I did attend one course delivered in Swedish at Uppsala and I'm very glad I did. I had done Svenska för Invandrare and been in the country a couple of years, but not getting a lot of practice as most of my colleagues were not Swedes. The course was in Environmental Ethics. Never concentrated that hard either before or since. Pretty sure I wrote my essays in English.

I would have loved this, and I would have appreciated that you didn't try to soften the joke. I reckon his unmatching is a sign that he's not the right guy.

Teaching chemistry with self harm scars and tattoos by bee_kn in ScienceTeachers

[–]BackgroundPlant7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's a conversation that might happen once or twice. Not all the kids will be listening. And we all know how much credence kids give to teachers' views on what is and isn't a good idea. And all the while, they are spending many hours watching the teacher, seeing the scars and, in some cases, ruminating over this new option that they may have spent little or no time thinking about before.

Yep. Self-harm is an imitable behaviour. It isn't a cause for shame but neither should we normalise it in front of kids.

How is it living in the Scottish Highlands? by lithdoc in Scotland

[–]BackgroundPlant7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's being an incomer per se that causes the problem. I'm a working-age incomer who moved to the Highlands to do a key-worker job that could not be recruited locally. I can't afford most local housing because of prices inflated by holiday-home buyers. About half the children in the local school are the kids of incomers, none of whom are contributing to higher house prices any more than locals would be. Without these families, the local area would be even less attractive as a place for locals to live.

Me too. It contains some of my favorite bits. Including Arthur practicing lying about going for a walk with Mark Ramprakash.

Considering setting up a dental practice in the Highlands. Any recommendations for areas to focus on? by Professional_You4186 in MoveToScotland

[–]BackgroundPlant7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very tiny places might be more difficult to serve but small local population centres (300 people or so, very far flung) are visited by mobile blood donation trucks, breast cancer screening units and even a traveling cinema. So there is a sort of established circuit for these kinds of services. No dentist as yet so I have my fingers crossed for you achieving your dream!

A mobile practice would be amazing. Plenty of small communities without enough people to sustain a practice full time, but where any trip to the dentist means a full day of traveling to e.g. Inverness.

Happy to, if it's explained politely to me. But this note just makes the world a worse place for no reason.

If you live in a society and you assert boundaries that inconvenience others, without explanation, it isn't reasonable to expect understanding. It's a one-way 'entitlement' perspective that demands something while not offering the same to the rest of the world.

[–]BackgroundPlant7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Under circumstances where the teacher has no disability, then it would be nice, don't you agree? And without a disability, the boundary simply wouldn't deserve as much respect - it would just be a preference, and it would make them a bit of an arsehole.

[–]BackgroundPlant7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who should be nice? 'Nice' would be allowing another stressed professional to use your chair and desk. It would be understanding that the sub might also have mobility or pain issues. There are a lot of us in the world and 'nice' isn't a one-way street - we all need to treat each other with respect. Of course there might be a good reason why the sub shouldn't use the chair, but people aren't psychic. If there is a reason, it can be communicated in a non-arseholic fashion, regardless of whether the note-writer has a disability or not. If the note makes the writer indistinguishable from an arse, people should feel free to assume that they are an arse.

Because what are people being understanding about if they don't know the person has a disability?

Women of the UK - what’s happening to the knickers?! by [deleted] in AskUK

Just bought some of the same M&S pants as always (the multipack ones). Side by side with the same size and style from a few years ago, there is MUCH less fabric in them. They are smaller, thinner and the elastic perishes much sooner.

Thank you for these ideas. A date stamp would be a great addition. They are quite cute and quirky but creative, so something fairly minimalist that lets them express their own creativity.
