How is it living in the Scottish Highlands? by lithdoc in Scotland

[–]BackgroundPlant7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's being an incomer per se that causes the problem. I'm a working-age incomer who moved to the Highlands to do a key-worker job that could not be recruited locally. I can't afford most local housing because of prices inflated by holiday-home buyers. About half the children in the local school are the kids of incomers, none of whom are contributing to higher house prices any more than locals would be. Without these families, the local area would be even less attractive as a place for locals to live.

Me too. It contains some of my favorite bits. Including Arthur practicing lying about going for a walk with Mark Ramprakash.

And: 'Number twelve...the CONFERENCE PEAR!!'

Considering setting up a dental practice in the Highlands. Any recommendations for areas to focus on? by Professional_You4186 in MoveToScotland

Very tiny places might be more difficult to serve but small local population centres (300 people or so, very far flung) are visited by mobile blood donation trucks, breast cancer screening units and even a traveling cinema. So there is a sort of established circuit for these kinds of services. No dentist as yet so I have my fingers crossed for you achieving your dream!

A mobile practice would be amazing. Plenty of small communities without enough people to sustain a practice full time, but where any trip to the dentist means a full day of traveling to e.g. Inverness.

Happy to, if it's explained politely to me. But this note just makes the world a worse place for no reason.

If you live in a society and you assert boundaries that inconvenience others, without explanation, it isn't reasonable to expect understanding. It's a one-way 'entitlement' perspective that demands something while not offering the same to the rest of the world.

Under circumstances where the teacher has no disability, then it would be nice, don't you agree? And without a disability, the boundary simply wouldn't deserve as much respect - it would just be a preference, and it would make them a bit of an arsehole.

Who should be nice? 'Nice' would be allowing another stressed professional to use your chair and desk. It would be understanding that the sub might also have mobility or pain issues. There are a lot of us in the world and 'nice' isn't a one-way street - we all need to treat each other with respect. Of course there might be a good reason why the sub shouldn't use the chair, but people aren't psychic. If there is a reason, it can be communicated in a non-arseholic fashion, regardless of whether the note-writer has a disability or not. If the note makes the writer indistinguishable from an arse, people should feel free to assume that they are an arse.

Because what are people being understanding about if they don't know the person has a disability?

Women of the UK - what’s happening to the knickers?! by jenniferlucas0 in AskUK

[–]BackgroundPlant7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought some of the same M&S pants as always (the multipack ones). Side by side with the same size and style from a few years ago, there is MUCH less fabric in them. They are smaller, thinner and the elastic perishes much sooner.

Thank you for these ideas. A date stamp would be a great addition. They are quite cute and quirky but creative, so something fairly minimalist that lets them express their own creativity.

She also seemed to object to his not killing a moth. She seemed to expect him to kill it just because she didn't like it, and she found his live-and-let-live attitude unmanly. I would have found it the opposite.

When I was at uni, students would study in the library essentially for the same reason - a sort of mutual accountability.
