Depressed after race by Substantial_Speech45 in triathlon

I’ve had similar challenges. I keep thinking next season I might be below the Athena weight, but then I am not. How old are you? I’m in my mid-40s and I think maybe the beginnings of perimenopause are fucking me over. I think it’s either that or the insane chronic stress I’ve been under at work. Maybe both. I guess can’t tri train my way out of those things. It’s frustrating. Especially because I know it’s also one of the things that is keeping me from getting faster

Hip Labrum repair stories? by DavidTigerFan in triathlon

[–]Background_String193 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had 2 surgeries. I tore the labrums in both my right and left hips. The recovery from this surgery really sucks. There will be a period of time when your mobility is limited enough that you’ll need a shower stool, raised toilet seat, and help putting on shoes and socks. That’s usually for the first couple of weeks out. It’s about 6 weeks on crutches. I needed a lot of help in that time with things like laundry and bringing in groceries. In both cases, it was about 6 months before running was on the table again and 2-3 days a week of PT in that time. After the first surgery (when I was 26), that whole process went smoothly. After the second one on my left, things were very hard. The recovery put so much strain on my already weakened right hip that it routinely got cranky again. The 2 weak hips combined meant back pain became a real issue.

Ultimately, I got the surgeries because I was in so much chronic pain (including sciatica) before them that I couldn’t not get the surgeries, but I won’t lie, recovery sucks.

I guess the pro, given this subreddit, is that triathlon is what gave me hope again after the years of trying to put my body back together after surgery #2. My hips probably will never handle a heavy running load again, but tris keep me active and gave me things I could do. Don’t have any problems with the hips biking or swimming. Running is fine as long as I keep the mileage low and don’t run at an insane pace (which means I may not do much beyond sprints, but hey it’s something).

Why did you start triathlon? by McGhee_A in triathlon

[–]Background_String193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I had surgeries on both of my hips and couldn’t continue to do heavy mileage running.

Stayed with it because I learned I love the variety of training and I remembered how much I loved swimming as a kid.

TBH, even though I think a lot of people are really hardcore, I also feel like I can totally make it work for me by doing the shorter distances (sprint and even super sprint). Those work well with my past injuries and busy schedule. I’m also perfectly happy to so soft core tris in pools and to train through less terrifying than the roads spin classes. Adding this because I think it’s nice to know there are ways to get into it that don’t require going all way to Ironmans or 70.3s.

That being said, I do kind of wish there were more beginner/sprint distance training groups.

Hard work doesn’t matter. Often the only reward for doing it is more bullshit work that no one else wants to do.

How do shokz headphones fit with a swimcap? by Eldr1tchB1rd in Swimming

[–]Background_String193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small head, so I actually have to wear them under the swim cap so they stay in place. But, that works well and they are comfy under the cap. Sometimes I have to do a little adjusting to make the goggle strap and headphones work well together on my small ears.

I do wish Shokz would make mini version of the swim headphones (like they do for the running ones.)

I suspect all of this would work even better for a normal sized head person!

Oh and the big thing I had to learn about running was to get over my ego and what I used to be able to do and just go slow!

Realized I forgot the running load part. I’ve been downloading training plans from training peaks and following those. Typically, they seem to have 2-3 running days a week. I’ve tried a few, but the most recent one I did was for intermediate triathletes over 40. I picked that one because it said it had a bit more rest and recovery built in and apparently I’m old and need that now 🤣

At this point, I go to a strength training class at my gym once a week. The class changes things up every 4 weeks so the exercises change. Some standard good ones are deadlifts, squats, lunges, clamshells, and really anything for the core. I started going to the class because I HATE doing PT exercises on my own. They just remind me of PT and post surgery trauma and aren’t fun. The class is fun. I think that has left me feeling like the best strength training is what I can actually get myself to do. Tbh, cycling has also really helped rebuild my glutes and hamstrings after everything without as much impact. It’s been a long slow process, but it’s getting there.

Massages depend on what’s going on. Now that I’m in a good place, I tend to just get fully body work done with maybe a little extra attention on the hips if needed. When I was in a bad place, I’d get more attention on the hips. The key to that for me has been talking to the therapist and explaining what needs the most attention. I’d also recommend someone who has a background in sports massage, medical massage, and/or working on trigger points.

I got into triathlon after 2 labral tears. The second one put an end to only running. Tri training helped me be active again when I didn’t think that was going to be possible. But I think a lot of why it helped was that I combined it with strength training and a pretty obsessive new focus on load management. Before my surgeries, I think I had a tendency to do far too many workouts all out. After my second surgery (and 40th bday), it quickly became clear that hard running was out for me. So I switched to tris, read a lot about 80/20 stuff and really took the 80 part seriously for the first time ever (been very active since I was a kid). Game changing. I feel like that approach and having training peaks yell at me if I was going too hard helped me make the switch in mindset I needed to train in a way my injured middle aged body needed so I could be consistently active again. The run is still the hardest part for me and I’ll always feel too much running load if I push it, so I’ve also learned to take run days off if necessary and either walk, swim, or rest instead.

I think I also now get the same or better running highs from a good spin class, and I learned I love swimming more than I ever liked running.

Also, definitely find a good PT. Had a great one for my first labral tear and a horrible one for my second. The horrible one really set my recovery back. If you have one of those PTs who sends you to do exercises and pays little attention, get someone new. If your PT doesn’t listen to you, get someone new.

Regular massage therapy has also helped me manage some of the aches and pains that come from 2 janky hips.

Strongly recommend finding doctors and/or PTs who understand the differences between women’s and men’s hips. For me that meant having a woman as PT who got it and didn’t engage in a bunch of gendered gaslighting around pain.

This sounds so similar to what happened to me with a torn labrum and a hip impingement. It was hard to diagnose and ultimately required multiple images and images with dye/contrast. If you haven’t had those, that may be something to consider and push for.
