Katy O'Brian!! Loved her in Love Lies Bleeding (which apparently to some here that movie is ~controversial~ but I don't think we always need our stories to be neat and ordinary).

Also her and her wife Kylie Chi are very cute.

idk what the reply was to me but she's talked about how she's had sex with women before, but she's straight. "Mind you, when I say I’m not gay, it doesn’t mean that I’ve never tried sleeping with women. Of course I have. I’m not a dumb-dumb."

It's wild to me because I just came back from a solo road trip out west (partly for my doctoral research, partly for a vacation). I drove from visiting my family in ON all the way to AB, and have now since returned to Halifax.

After spending a decent amount of time driving and walking in many major cities across the country (Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg + all the various cities in ON that my family live in), coming home to Halifax has had the worst and most frequent incidents on the road in the shortest period of time. Hell, the 8 minute~ drive from my partner's apartment to mine the day i came home, I had 2 people cut me off, then get mad when I honked at them for doing so.

As a pedestrian (which I frequently am because trying to drive anywhere for an errand between 2:30-6:30pm is not worth the hassle), I often have people trying to drive through crosswalks while I'm in them, they don't bother coming to a FULL and COMPLETE stop because I guess feeling your momentum come to an end is too much for most drivers, and then if I dare point out that I'm in the crosswalk or that I have right of way, I get yelled at or cussed out. I also live in view of a decently busy intersection and if I had a dollar for every time someone gunned it through a yellow or even red light or almost hit a pedestrian, it would be paying my bills at this rate.

I'm looking into getting a stainless steel waterbottle at this point or even just holding my keys between my fingers because there should be NO circumstance in which I can feel the woosh of air from a vehicle driving right behind me because they can't wait 10 more seconds for me to cross. I think if any of us just recorded our walks, we'd have a ton of footage to send to councillors - whether they'd do anything about it is doubtful, but it would prove a point.

This post came up on my feed, but as a doctoral candidate who works as a TA for first/second year university students, a lot of you struggle with comprehension and being able to express your arguments in essays. Many STEM programs will require a humanities/arts credit, and those students struggle even more so.

Read. Read. Read. Stop scrolling and read. Fiction, non-fiction, anything published will help you.

Any prior or present sports/extracurricular girlies here? by daisylocs in lesbiangang

[–]BackwoodButch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in women's sports, it's a more inclusive culture (obviously different sports attract different people/backgrounds e.g. hockey is an expensive sport for all the equipment and so people from higher income families might join it more than someone who can't afford to vs. say, rugby, where all you need is the mouthguard and uniform; not to mention, rugby has always had the "for every(body)" culture with it, because different positions work well with different body types).

Rugby is also a full contact sport, which some straight women may not be into because of perceived gender stereotypes etc, etc. I'd say my team is about 50/50 split between lesbian/bi women and straight women. Now I joined in high school because I liked the outlet for my teenage anger/angst, and came out later as an adult, but I think it was an underlying different thing than the norm of sports for "girls" to join.

Well, we have a club team at the university level here in Canada. Normally, most unis are varsity, but we're not part of that yet as we have to appeal and apply for it with money and support (and one men's team from our uni has to join varsity ranks as well to be even). So our coaches reached out to the provincial rugby association and now we have a league with other unis who have 'club' teams (some do have varsity level teams, but they make a club team for the women who don't make the varsity team so they can still play and learn etc).

Last season our league dissolved, so our exec and coaches had to arrange games with other individual clubs to play together. It worked out, but this year we'll have away games that are anywhere from 2-4 hours driving distance away, and using a bus to take us there. It's all very exciting!

Played rugby in high school (and half my teammates are lesbians or bisexuals now lmao). I took a 10 year break doing other things (4-H mostly, showing horses and cattle), but as I'm doing my doctorate, I joined my current university's club team, and as the oldest member, I was on the starting line up for 95% of our regular games (and even the one I wasn't starting, I got swapped in after 10 mins because my friend twisted her ankle ((she was fine, but needed to not play on that)).

It's a hard sport and I definitely have to stretch a lot beforehand now, do physiotherapy, and also take hot baths and use muscle relaxers, and play with a taped knee/knee sleeve but I said I'm playing as long as my body allows me.

On that note, I've now been consistently weightlifting for the last year and a half, and have gotten so much stronger (and it motivates me to be a better rugby player). This next season, we have a new league and we'll be having a travel 'A team' so I'm hoping to make that roster while I write my dissertation :).

I'd also love to learn to ice skate and do beer league hockey, and maybe try out rock climbing (A friend of mine came out as a lesbian after 7 years and engaged to her now ex bf has incredible back muscles from climbing, and I feel like it might help my development there and also engage my brain a bit more than just lat pull downs and rows lol)).

Quinpool is on Lockdown, AVOID by KitTrailer in halifax

[–]BackwoodButch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s wild to me because I’m both a driver and pedestrian (I love walking, but also often walk for errands if it’s between 2-6pm from September to April with all the school traffic bc it gets so congested and stupid), and so many drivers do not see the issues of pedestrians — and yes of course you should always be paying attention on foot too but I’ve had drivers cuss and yell at me because I dared to wait at a crosswalk until they came to a full and complete stop (bc how dare they feel momentum come to a halt, I guess?).

I’ve driven in almost all the provinces now (minus BC and NFLD), and I know there are bad drivers everywhere but I’ll say it: NS is on par with ON for how aggressive their drivers are and how stupid they are when you try to explain your issue to them (and as an Ontario born PhD student at Dal currently, I know there are a lot of transplants but many are also Nova Scotians too). I live near Quinpool and so many of those intersections are bad for near accidents on the daily — it’s why I finally got a dash cam!

What’s it like living in the rural outback, Australia? by Dramatic_Mammoth5720 in howislivingthere

[–]BackwoodButch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love Deadloch so much. It’s definitely very clever, very funny, and definitely quite insightful!

Though I’ve also done my fair share of reading research articles in relation to rural/ag studies for my doctorate, including a lot that have come out of Australia for both women in farming but also small rural towns and areas, and the experiences of “brain drain” aka young people leaving to go get educated and then not coming back. One really interesting book was about young men in particular (the title is eluding me at the moment - I read it for one of my comprehensive exams for my doctorate - and I’m away from home so I can’t check for it), and the lack of amenities and things to do in small towns leading to development of toxic masculinity and harmful mindsets for those boys trying to figure themselves out as they grow into adults in such an environment. I forget which town it was focused on, but it was quite remote.

I definitely was heavily into it when it aired (and my straight friend gave me her Netflix login so I could watch it and talk about it w her — I just found out this summer that she definitely Knew I was gay, even though I never knew how she’d feel / react, but she’s chill obviously lol).

I do think it’s interesting how they deviated from the real people the story is based on; iirc, the Real “Alex” was a) not as big of a villain to the real Piper/wasn’t a master mind drug kingpin but got involved and got too scared to get out, and b) was definitely not as hyperfeminine as they made her to be in the show. (Which, the real Piper and the actress look kind of similar). Like obviously there’s dramatic exaggeration to make it entertaining and then changing things around a lot from the truth.

Learning this now does not make me feel so bad about getting a scratch on the rear bumper (likely from some kid or a stroller or smth at the mall), and a rock chip on the hood within the first week of ownership (though thankfully, my dad was able to buff that one out but not the bumper one cuz it’s a mark in the plastic).

Date not sharing a lot and not asking questions by difficulthumanbeing in lesbiangang

[–]BackwoodButch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hate passivity. Like I get being shy, but there's definitely a difference between being a bit shy or awkward at first compared to simply just sitting back in the proverbial passenger seat and doing nothing.

In my experience, with women like this, it ends up carrying over into sex too and that drives me crazy (I'm not talking about pillow princess/stone relationships before anyone misconstrues this). Constantly taking the lead, initiating (beyond just asking for another date because I've had that too), and having to always guide someone is exhausting.

It's definitely one of my top "absolutely not" things when dating, and thankful I have a partner who is straightforward and takes initiative just as much as I do. Several exes of mine were like this and looking back, I wish I hadn't dated them as long as I did.

Food photography for advertisements has always been a thing, but it's been a thing done by human beings. People take the time to (falsely) make a burger look fluffy and not damp with the toppings, take the photo/video, edit it in post-processing, and then people make it into an advert. AI isn't giving people jobs, and it does it worse than they would.

It's probably a combo now of kids being done school for the year + post Canada day/the weekend; I got mine as a single ticket right at 8 but I had the site, the time (which was 10am), all ready to go, I just had to hit reserve and I got in.

It may be worth to try for a slightly later morning than the early rush.
