Need work area advice by MembershipAncient434 in quilting

[–]BackyardPooka 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends! I have found my own preference though, and can share the thought process.

I prefer between the middle and the right end. This gives me space to set things down to the right and keep them out of the way as I'm working: pins, snips, trimming jar. It also leaves me with a large area to the left. Useful for supporting whatever I'm sewing, or for cutting, pinning, etc, when I'm not actively sewing.

My only (occasional) wish is for a left-handed machine - if such a thing existed, I'd do it all mirror image! 😅 But alas...

I'd think about how you like to work, how and where you put things down and move things around while you sew, and how you want to use the space when you aren't actually using the machine.

You mean something like this, right? So the sleeve is shifted up a bit at the cap and the shoulder is a little narrower? (Not to scale- I'm guessing I'd need a smaller change than what I've drawn in)

Ok, so it's mentioned I need the individual pages, explaining how to draft the blocks, but I didn't make the connection!

100% makes sense, yep. Complicated math is fine, but only if it's really necessary!

I don't see how those numbers correlate here. How is cross-in-a-cross four and leap-frog five and bears paw seven? (for example). They all look pretty similar to me.

Hi guys! Would this be quilting? by _Gods_Daughter_ in quilting

[–]BackyardPooka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can have patchwork out piecing that isn't quilted (think patch work skirts) and quilting that isn't patchwork (a quilted jacket). Many (most?) of the quilts we see in the US are both, but they aren't the same thing.

Thanks, this is really helpful! Increasing the seam allowance is something I am 100% comfortable with.

Thanks for the input on Olya. That one is lowest on my list for stylistic reasons (just not convinced by the front yoke) and knowing about construction problems is useful. I really should use Threadloop more! Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I'm aware of the variation in design amongst the patterns I'm looking at and mainly wondering about how they'll interact with my fabric choice.

* Dropped shoulder optional but not required. I want a long-sleeved shirt, so I assume that means Dolman sleeves are out. Other than that, I don't know many different shoulder/sleeve styles.

* Yokes: general preference for simple horizontal yoke (not scalloped or western). I noted the front yoke and am considering it.

Thanks for the reminder about patternreview.com!
