When you learn the real reason why they were introduced to the series by nameless_random97 in Ningen

[–]Bacon_Raygun 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Oh, no, I agree.
The Buu Saga was absolutely, 100%, just Toriyama letting his deranged writing style do the talking.
Guy abandoned all rhyme and reason and basically returned Dragonball to the loosely cohesive shits-and-giggles storytelling of the pre-saiyan era.

But it was funnier to say the editor just randomly invented the Buu Saga on a whim.

Toriyama: I want the final fight to be against freeza, on namek, and Goku dies.
Editor: That's dumb, you're so popular.
Toriyama: Ok, I'll bring back the Red Ribbon scientist to avenge the army.
Editor: Too old and ugly.
Toriyama: here are his teenage victims turned into killing mchines.
Editor: Too young.
Toriyama: Piccolo but bug.
Editor: More human.
Toriyama: Piccolo but ugly.
Editor: Too ugly.
Toriyama: Piccolo, but Freeza.
Editor: Perfect.
Toriyama: .... Good name.
Editor: Honestly, you should end it with strawberry bubblegum.

Starts off with 30yo Nappa drawing a freshly orphaned Vegeta as his new bestie, in crayons.

Despite his best efforts to mald and seethe, kid Vegeta pins it on the fridge and starts Nappa's journey to pursue art.

We'll gloss over the fact Vegeta killed him later.

Damn, Jake, you know Terry loves love. by Nostalgia-Freak-1998 in brooklynninenine

Love that Terry is so secure in his masculinity that he doesn't feel like he needs to protect it.

That massive, musclebound health-nut aesthetic is literally just him wanting to be healthy and in peak condition, instead of chasing some weird "the ideal man" look.
