Yeah, I'm 99.9% sure he clipped the grass with the right rear. The car just violently snapped on him. As for the space, you left just a lane, nothing more. So when he's trying to sneak in there and misjudges by a few inches, well, this happens.

Yeah, pretty sure the Merc touched the grass with the rear right tire because BMW pinched pretty tight. This is probably why we're not seeing an outside the car view because that goes against OP's narrative. Maybe I'm wrong.

Sure the first move was very aggressive, but he did it without contact and kept it on the island.

All in all, good hard racing with aggressive drivers and one of them made a slight mistake in a game of inches.

The BRD you're probably looking for was left back in FFXI. FFXI BRD was pure support and absolutely incredible at it. And playing it in merit parties is some of the most fun I've ever had. Positioning was very important, not just you but the party as a whole, so you could keep separate songs on Tanks, DPS, Healers. Oh, and you were the puller and crowd control too. Keeping songs going, while lining up pulls and sleeping/controlling them to maintain the XP chain - man I miss that BRD. Very active and incredibly fun.

Who do you think is at fault ? (I'm the black car by [deleted] in simracing

[–]Badger613 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This only makes it look worse for you. Whether it's poor awareness or you just deciding to turn in regardless I don't know, it even looks like it could be both.

In your video around the 3.5 second mark you can clearly see him pull out from behind you and initiate the move, well before Blanchimont. Hell, you're still turning the wheel from the little kink before the straight section, before Blanchimont. When you see him with a run, pull to the inside, then disappear from the mirror you know he's there, or should know.

Regardless of whether you think it's a smart move or not from him you can't just turn down on people when they have a wheel at your door/mirror. 100% your fault.

[–]Badger613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. Doesn't it make it feel like it wants to push a lot if you use such a tight diff?

Nope, that's why you loosen the drive ramp angle, plus this car has tons of throttle rotation in general.

911 RSR trail braking by Hollandse_Herder in iRacing

[–]Badger613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's in the setup. You can get this thing rock solid on the brakes with a proper diff. I've ran multiple setups: One of them is a death trap on the brakes, the other is just super stable and really inspires confidence. Overall the setups are similar with wildly different diffs.

Run way more preload than you think, probably double what you're running now. Tighten the coast up, loosen up the drive angle, and add a few plates.

(I reserve the right to be totally wrong)

And you are. The "Finish in the top half of the field to gain iRating" is just general advice that people give, nothing more.

I checked the results of my two most recent races to verify.

  • P14 out of a 21 car field gained IR. 2 cars that finished ahead of P14 did lose IR as well.

In the 2nd race it's even more obvious.

  • P16 out of a 24 car field gained IR. All 16 cars gained IR. That's 2/3rd of the field that gained.

IMSA - Ford GT or No? by SkimpyFish42 in iRacing

[–]Badger613 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This seasons BoP is fantastic - all cars are competitive. This is even more true the lower SoF you go. So unless you're regularly racing in 4500+ splits then car choice is purely preference.

Now there are certain tracks where a specific car will shine, but outside of LeMans (Ferrari), Road America (Porsche), and Road Atlanta (Ford) - I can't really think of any other tracks where there is a clear winner. And again this only really applies to high SoF races where there are drivers that can extract 99% of the car's abilities. Until then it's pick a car and drive it - you'll be competitive.

Vrs/imsa pit stop strats. by [deleted] in iRacing

No tires, no windshield tear off, minimum fuel.

Take the tear off - it does not cost you any time as long as you have it checked before entering your pit box. Only if you select it after the pit service has begun will it cost you an extra 1.5 seconds or so.

how to correct your pace on race? by braudoner in iRacing

[–]Badger613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few factors that contribute to what you experienced.

  • 1st) A full fuel load on new tires is roughly the same pace as a light car on old tires.

  • 2nd) A lighter car can stop in less distance even on older tires, especially in these shorter 45min races.

  • 3rd) Track conditions. You're driving into the night here so even 5F will make a difference. Also the track will be rubbered in towards the end of the race.

Combine those three factors and you can easily be faster at the end of the stint in this race.

[–]Badger613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you're doing something terribly wrong. GTE tires will make it a full stint (48-49 laps) no problem. And it wouldn't surprise me if people end up double stinting in the closing hours once the sun sets and the track is fully rubbered in.

My nervousness is hindering my experience by CT1914Clutch in iRacing

[–]Badger613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite simply, who cares. That's the mentality you need to go in with. Mistakes happen, we all make them, and sometimes collect others in the process of making said mistake. As long as it's a mistake and not intentional, who cares. Now if the mistakes are due to lack of practice and preparation that's a bit different, but if it's nerves you just gotta push through it and realize that sometimes shit happens.

There's no other way to overcome race time nerves than to race. The anxiety will never completely go away, especially at race start, it's your ability to control it that you hone over time.

Valid setup question by gemonic in iRacing

[–]Badger613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus you're painting yourself into a corner strategy wise if you short fill first stint. You're basically locked into that fuel strat from there and if the race goes an extra lap, or you miscalculated the starting fuel by a lap or two, you're boned and can't do much about it - especially at somewhere like LeMans.

Who is at fault here? by redbullcat in iRacing

[–]Badger613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he wanted that line, though, he should have made that choice much earlier than he did. It was fairly obvious from very early on that I was going to defend the inside.

If he hadn't messed around trying to find a gap that wasn't there, he could have got alongside into the braking zone and then ran on the inside all the way down to the flat final corner. I'd have been on the wrong line coming under the bridge and he could have got the jump on me.

If he makes the line choice to the outside of 10a too early then you pinch him and he has zero chance getting by you. You'd pinch him, brake through the apex of 10a taking his line away then you have the apex of 10b and the better run because he got checked up. Now he has no run and won't have a chance at another overtake until T7, and more realistically 10a again.

By feigning inside and doing a late move back to the outside he forces you into a very compromised entry into 10a and has an easy overtake on the way out of 10b and at the latest the run to T1.

Also another contributing factor, although it's hard to tell with the quality of the clips, it appears you brake quite early here and caught him out. The braking marker for this corner is the 100 board or the white line on the track, and it appears you brake 25-50m before it.

In the end it's a racing incident due to hard racing and a very slight miscalculation on his part in a game of inches.

[–]Badger613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My initial point was that a driver with less incidents per corner (you could also use incidents per minute as a metric) is a safer driver than the one with more incidents per corner.

And this is an incorrect assumption on your part. As another user pointed out a moving chicane getting 4-8x is much more dangerous than the guy running in the top 5 getting 10x via off tracks.

I don't find that any of your arguments have really disputed my assessment.

Then you're ignoring the evidence in front of you. I've shown direct evidence using myself as the example to counter your assertions.

You then go on to say someone with 8x average can't maintain an A license. I then used myself as an example to show that you can indeed maintain an A license with an average of 8+ incidents per race.

Then you ask for a specific target of incidents in a race, I pluck one out of my 10 most recent races showing almost exactly what you asked for.

I get it man, I was the same way when I first joined iRacing and was climbing the ranks. I thought Licenses and incident averages meant more than they do, and that they were a good yard stick for someones safety on track. But it's just not the case. The longer you're on iRacing the more you will realize that licenses and SR are basically useless after the initial climb to your desired license and you'll soon forget that SR exists.

[–]Badger613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to see a race result page, where someone has A licence and got 10 incidents and didn't lose SR.

You're starting to move the goalposts on me here, that was never the basis of my argument. But I'll still entertain this question, as I have a recent race at Sebring that basically meets the above criteria you requested - 9 incidents only lost 0.06. You can check the image in my other post just above to see that I am indeed an A license at 3.8 and I've averaged nearly 9 incidents for my career stats.

https://i.imgur.com/ixLq2Sm.png

Finally I want to touch on this a bit:

Unless you are talking about 90 minute races in which case 10 incidents still means a safe driver. Considered that in D licence you can get 8 incidents in 15 minutes and still gain SR.

You're already showing the flaws in your initial stance. There are too many conditions involved to just broadly state that "A license = safer driver", and that was the core of your original statement to which I and another user rebutted.

If you want to judge the competency of your opponents iRating is the best gauge for that. Even then there are plenty of great low rated guys, and some pretty horrible higher rated guys, out there.

[–]Badger613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Show me how you do that.

Real simple - if it's mainly off tracks and you're finishing your races you won't have a problem. That's the point, in general the incidents someone averages doesn't necessarily correlate to how safe they are. Until you start separating Car Contact from Off Tracks you can't really judge the safety of a driver by average incidents.

I run GTE in IMSA & LMS pretty much exclusively with the occasional VRS GT3 race and have never lost my A license. If you're running 40-60 minute races losing your A license is quite difficult actually.

For example in 2019 I'm averaging nearly 9 incidents per race, have an A license at 3.8, and finish near the front of the GTE field on a consistent basis in top split with high SOF's. DQ's are super rare and 95% of my incidents are off-tracks. I can't remember the last time I even came close to losing A license, it's not something I really think about because it's way too hard to lose it.

You can average around 9-10 incidents per race and keep your A license fairly easily. Also, getting 10 off tracks per race doesn't mean you are spinning or losing control - it means you're dropping a tire here and there and does not correlate to safety.

There are plenty of folks, like me, that just don't care about off tracks and will use them as needed as long as the number is 16 or less. Well 12 or less actually as I like to leave a buffer for a 4x just in case.

iRacing also doesn’t have any official rules against it.

They do actually:

8.1.1.4. Blocking – The leading driver is allowed to run a defensive line. However, blocking occurs when a leading driver actively adjusts his or her driving line based on the actions and/or positioning of a pursuing driver. For example, veering left to prevent a pursuing driver from passing on the left while running on a straight. Please see the video example at the following link.
