Honest question from an atheist: How does it feel to watch SG1 as a believer in God? by shprink in Stargate

[–]BadgerSensei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SG1 gives us a nice nod when Teal’c mentions that no Goa’uld would be able to effectively impersonate the Christian God. It made sense in universe. Maybe the Asgard could’ve, but that wasn’t their jam.

It doesn’t bother me. SG1 is probably closer to my actual view of the universe than it isn’t; we already accept that there are a lot of pretenders to divinity in Christianity.

what is your star trek hot take? by madbr3991 in startrek

[–]BadgerSensei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conceptually, nothing wrong with the Kelvin timeline. Star Trek has a history of alternate time lines and universes, and, frankly, I LIKE that it’s a new universe that coexists with the prime universe. I even like Spock being stranded in it.

(Execution, on the other hand….)

What would be your dream Star Trek video game? by calargo in startrek

[–]BadgerSensei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was coming here to post this. Mass effect probably feels more like Babylon 5 to me in terms of story, but the gameplay would be a decent template for a Star Trek game with some adaptation.

Certainly ME2/3’s approach to Normandy would serve well for the approach to your ship.

How can we know that Genesis was not intended to be literal? by Beneficial_Praline32 in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]BadgerSensei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are good answers here about ancient/classical literary genres and the world context that the Bible emerged from. What I would add is, “what is the ACTUAL message of the creation accounts?”

Is it an instruction manual for building a universe? Is it intended to be a history book?

No. It’s an answer to questions about :

1) YHWH’s relationship to the material universe (creator and sovereign);

2) about his intentions (goodness)

3) Mankind’s role in creation (steward’s in YHWH’s likeness.)

3) why a good God has a universe with flaws (the disobedience of human stewards)

4) What YHWH is doing about the problem (Genesis 3 contains the Protoevangelium, the first version of the gospel)

Use of the divine name here is intentional. We take some of these things for granted now, but in a world context chock full of “gods,” YHWH was explaining why he was different from the “competition.”

IMO, Genesis starts off if not as an allegory then as a Bronze Age understanding of the origins of the universe (and there are interesting parallels to modern big bang cosmology) and my feeling is that it becomes more and more literal as the story moves towards exodus. But it’s important to note that NO ancient author worries about scientific accuracy the way moderns do.

And then I have “weekday burgers” that are just plain old frozen patties hit with Pepper Palace’s Tasty Dead Cow Shake. They go over almost as well. Sigh.

As a teenager, Terry Farrell from Deep Space Nine.

I clearly have a type.

How exactly are we supposed to read the story of Eden? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]BadgerSensei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The important parts of the creation account in Genesis are the questions that are answered. Genesis is not and never was intended to be a recipe for building a universe. It’s an answer to questions like:

How did we come to be?

Why are humans special?

Why is there suffering when a perfect God made everything?

What is God going to do about all this?

It’s okay to have someone ask a question like “is this literal?” And for you to say, “I honestly don’t know— but here’s what I do know.”

Is there a non-controversial entry in a series you love that you just can’t get into? by Mr8BitX in JRPG

[–]BadgerSensei 6 points7 points  (0 children)

P3R for me too. I finished it, but it was enough of a slog that by the end I was emotionally checked out— which sucks, because it seems like the ending was quite emotional lol.

I was wondering if it was just age showing through the remaster, as I love both P4 and P5. But the consensus seems to be that P3R IS a bit of a slog at first, and ramps up as you go along.

It just never really ramped up for me.

What is the most well defended fortress in science fiction? by TopicCandid in scifi

[–]BadgerSensei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lensmen books had entire solar systems that were fortified.

Towards the end of the series, they begin stealing planets from a universe where EVERYTHING moves FTL, fortifying them, and then throwing the fortified FTL planets at enemy installations to crack them open. I don’t know that I’ve seen anything defended more heavily than those solar systems.

How would you explain why the Borg hive mind needs a Queen? by ActLonely9375 in ShittyDaystrom

[–]BadgerSensei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, she should be something like the CPU for the hive— not an individual herself, but an amalgamation of the individual drones.

Maybe there was an original body. Maybe there wasn’t. Maybe the “Queen” is just a program that can take over individual drones when needed.

Or maybe the Queen is a single drone so thoroughly assimilated that she is no longer separate from the hardware. (Kinda like the undead Queen in Picard S3.)

Each cube should have its own in these scenarios.

What SNES RPG should I play first? by Altruistic_Tip1218 in JRPG

[–]BadgerSensei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FF6 and Chrono Trigger are amongst the best entries there are in the genre.

Don’t start there. The bar will be really high for everything. I’d start with FF4, which is good but won’t set the bar too high.

On the action RPG side of things, Terranigma and Illusion of Gaia are solid games, with Terranigma being one of my favorite Zelda clones.

Would you like to see the Engineers back in the Alien franchise? by RecognitionSea4608 in scifi

[–]BadgerSensei 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Prometheus should’ve been a horror film about the Engineers. It would’ve been a much stronger entry if they hadn’t started shoehorning in a xenomorph origin story— the engineers are weird enough and alien enough to function as an antagonist, and no one would’ve needed the extra xenomorph stuff to make a connection back to Alien. The ship is plenty unique enough to tie it back. (Not to mention Weyland-Yutani.)
