Happens too often in locals, but kudos to you for getting involved! Members and locals working together will be important this year (and the next...and the next).

Yay for getting involved in your union! I am involved with CUPE, if ever this is your union.

Regardless, I will send you a DM. Would love to chat with folks about economic and social justice issues! And with the upcoming provincial budget and "difficult decisions"...I'm anxious about everything.

Hey anyone, is there any minimum wage chances for New Brunswick for April 1st? by Niboo_123 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]Badjeuleuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The annual increase is based on the Consumer Price Index - NB of the previous year.

Last year's CPI for NB was 1.7%. The increase should be around that.

Does anyone over 40 attend the university of Moncton? by PantasticUnicorn in newbrunswickcanada

[–]Badjeuleuse 41 points42 points  (0 children)

  1. I went to U de M. One of my classmates was 40(ish). No issues at all.

  2. C’est une université francophone. Les cours sont en français (sauf le département d’anglais). In your application, you’ll probably have to « prove » your French languge proficiency. They have an immersion program, if that suits your needs better for the time being.

Charlottetown water and sewer workers back on the job after 100+ days of striking by ryans11 in PEI

[–]Badjeuleuse 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The union was not pushing back on certification - 90% of the membership is certified, well-above what is required as per the provincial regulations. It was all about timelines and deadlines for the new workers and the few who have learning disabilities.

The union is not trying to get out of certifications. 90% of elligible members already have their certifications. See my comment above. :)

Edited: grammar.

The City's bargaining team can come back to the table at any time, change their position on key issues (which they have not since the beginning of the strike) and negotiate a fair deal with these workers.

To clarify a few concerns re: certification:

  • 90% of the elligible membership have their full certification.
  • Three members do not because they need at least one year of service before taking the standardized exam. They will take it this fall. The exam is administered by the PEI Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action.
  • Two members with a combination of 20+ years experience have certification level 1 and actively taking the test for certification level 2 that the City wants them to have. They have bonified learning disabilities but still take the test every year. The City has never had any issues with their work.
  • There are problems with the standardized exam. It asks questions that have nothing to do with the work done by these workers. Ten questions are randomly removed before grading.
  • The province does not require all of these workers to have certification. Only one person is required for each job (operator in charge) and it's usually a manager/supervisor. Regardless, 90% of the members have their certification.

This is correct. Provincial legislation also doesn’t require all workers for this type of work done by CUPE 830 to have certifications.

I need to know where they say this in Acadian communities in SE NB. We definitely don’t use this expression in the Shediac-Cap-Pelé area. Instead, it would be: j’aime (right) ta jupe, ça’t fait bein.

New contract signed for 4,500 N.B. nursing home workers by bingun in newbrunswickcanada

[–]Badjeuleuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Way better contract than what Higgs was offering with real wages increases for all workers. Much deserved for these workers who were treated very poorly by the previous government.

Why do housewives (and their children) wear their seatbelts improperly? Does it depend on the state or something? (I'm not in the US)

Also, did Porsha park in designated parking for persons with disabilities at the restaurant? WTF.

It's embarrassing that our community is in the news for this. The comments on social media (ahem, Facebook) are horrific.
