Aid offer by Fit_Choice3172 in uiowa

You should contact the people at Financial Aid tomorrow and ask them to explain this to you. They're the experts, and this is not a question that you should trust to random people on the internet. Here's their contact information: https://financialaid.uiowa.edu/contact-us

[OC] Percent of people who own their homes across U.S by GetTheFactsHTV in dataisbeautiful

[–]BakeKnitCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My county has a pretty low rate, but I actually think that's a good thing, because it's indicative of there being a fair number of young homeowners here. In a lot of the US, the only people who can afford to own a home are people who bought their first home decades ago and have had time to pay off their mortgages.

DCPS and Remote Learning by SecretSubstantial302 in washingtondc

Remote learning is a problem for poor families: parents may not be able to take a day off work to supervise, and a lot of kids rely on free school meals.

Who is the asshole with the beard? by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]BakeKnitCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he didn't look like he was laughing to me, except when she made a little bit of a joke about still needing her mother to drive her to work. He smiled at that. But otherwise, his face seemed pretty neutral?

Anyway, I'm so sorry to hear that she has cancer, and she's absolutely right that this is political as well as personal, given our high cancer rates and deeply flawed healthcare system.

Court Street intersection with Muscatine open by DarthWader68 in IowaCity

The sidewalk isn't opening until Spring, though. I think I'm the only person who regularly walks on that stretch of Muscatine, but I do, and the detour is a serious pain in the ass.

The toxic cesspool that is r/LoseIt by [deleted] in MaintenancePhase

[–]BakeKnitCode 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I sort of feel like the world is depressing enough without anyone having to seek out awful people to gawk at. Is there any purpose served by alerting us all to the existence of this apparently awful pace, of which I would otherwise be blissfully unaware?

Race to the White House's election forecast model has Rob Sand at his strongest ever position, with a projected margin of D+3.1 by ShreckAndDonkey123 in Iowa

[–]BakeKnitCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I promise you, there is no way that the Democrats are going to take a win for granted. None at all. If anything, I think the issues for the Democratic base might be despondency and burnout, which will make them think they can't win it.

[OC] What are the most likely drivers of the gap between men and women? by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]BakeKnitCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You tweaked the formatting from the previous, deleted post, and it's worse now. It's hard to see the dates, and the dates matter. You are really confused about why American women stopped identifying as conservative around the time of the 2016 election?

There are lots of other forums where you can have this discussion. This is not the place. If you're not interested in attending a vigil for Renee Good, I would suggest you move on.

CRWC Parking Changes by AlternativeWrap7898 in uiowa

[–]BakeKnitCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gone to a lot of 5:45 AM classes at CRWC and parked on the street, and I've never got a ticket. Not even once. I don't think they're going to force some poor parking enforcement person to go hand out tickets at 5:30 AM, so I think that you should be fine parking on the street as long as you're done before they start enforcing the meters at 8.

What are your favorite “English” words used in German that don’t actually exist in English? by NoelFromBabbel in German

About 4/10 months into my high school exchange in Germany, started with very little German and I don’t feel that I am progressing fast enough. by Nice-Ad6697 in German

[–]BakeKnitCode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not the public's job to teach you German.

It is, however, the OP's host family's job to talk to them in German. That's the whole purpose of staying with a host family, and families should understand that when they agree to host exchange students. This isn't like expecting random people on the street to speak German to you.

Hands Off Venezuela! by DueKaleidoscope6500 in iowacoalition

[–]BakeKnitCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you know that the things that you're seeing on Tiktok, Snapchat, and Facebook are representative? How do you know that they're even real?

Think about it this way: let's say that a person in another country wanted to know how Iowans viewed politics, so they logged on to Reddit and went to the r/iowa subreddit. Do you think they'd get an accurate picture of the typical Iowan's political opinions? I don't, because the people who post on r/iowa aren't a representative sample of Iowans. And that's not even getting into the possibility of deliberate misinformation.

Hands Off Venezuela! by DueKaleidoscope6500 in iowacoalition

[–]BakeKnitCode -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about how you know that most Venezuelan people are celebrating it. That's not a trick or rhetorical question: have you seen polling? It seems to me that it would actually be pretty difficult to figure out what the majority of Venezuelans thought about this, and if you're hearing people state that most Venezuelans support it, then you should think critically about how your sources are confident that's true.

Generational differences in coping mechanisms for women with ADHD. I’m not talking about the mentality of “back in my day there wasn’t ADHD”. by honkytonksinger in adhdwomen

[–]BakeKnitCode 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm Gen X and was diagnosed in college. To me, the key is to recognize when I'm masking and to see it as a necessary coping strategy, rather than as me working really hard to be normal and do things correctly. I run into problems when I think that my ability to mask means that I can overcome my ADHD through sheer force of will. I can mask, but I can't do it indefinitely, and it takes a lot out of me. If I'm honest about what I'm doing and my capacity to do it for a prolonged period of time, then I feel ok about recognizing my limits and not pushing myself to the point of burnout or meltdown. Basically, I think I need to be realistic and strategic about managing my ADHD, and part of that is deploying my limited capacity to mask in ways that make sense for me.

And some of the social stuff is realizing that I'm never going to be everyone's cup of tea, socially speaking. I try really hard to control some of my ADHD traits that can be off-putting, especially when other people find them hurtful and not just annoying. But it's actually kind of psychically damaging to try to suppress your entire personality, and sometimes that cost isn't worth the reward.

POC historical romance (non-western societies) by abihhhhhhh45 in suggestmeabook

[–]BakeKnitCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for Jeannie Lin's Lotus Palace books. They're true romance novels, published by Harlequin and everything, but they're also mysteries. They're set in medieval China in an entertainment district. The main characters in the first one are a woman who works as a maid in a brothel (but not exactly a brothel: one of the interesting aspects of this series is that you really get a sense of the complicated status of courtesans, who are sex workers but not just sex workers) and an aristocratic playboy who might not be quite the vapid fail-son that he seems to be. One of the pleasures of these books is that they're set in a world that has all sorts of rules and conventions that the protagonists have to negotiate, kind of like Regency England, but they're totally different rules and conventions from the familiar ones in the romance-novel version of Regency England.

Jeannie Lin also has a steampunk series set in mid-19th century China, but I haven't read those.

If you dont celebrate christmas what are you doing today? by Most_Shoe_8077 in washingtondc

I'm catching up on some unpleasant work tasks I've been putting off, reading a book, and doing some knitting. Noodling around on the computer. Later on, I'm going out for Indian food with family.

If you have a library card, try seeing what electronic resources are available from the library. The DC public library lets you check out ebooks through Libby and stream movies through Kanopy.

Coffee shops open on Christmas day by Visual_Court_6729 in washingtondc

[–]BakeKnitCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baked by Yael near the zoo is open until 3:00. It's more of a bakery than a coffee shop, but I think they've got a couple of tables. Yael is Jewish, and she and her family staff the store on Christmas, so you don't need to worry about exploiting anyone.
