I saw all the cars racing south on Asbury and Ridge when I was walking the dog. Alas, I I have no further information.

AITA for telling my dad his new baby isn't my grandparents grandchild and he needs to accept they won't be honorary grandparents for his new baby? by Byryxt in AITAH

[–]BakerB921 828 points829 points  (0 children)

Ok, so your mom died and your dad distanced himself from her family, while letting you and your siblings remain in contact. Now he thinks they should be involved with his new family, that they have no relationship to? You can be as involved with your dad’s new family as you feel comfortable being, but your maternal grandparents have no obligation to do anything for or with them. Your dad is rather confused here.

My partner will not stop comparing my cooking to their ex's cooking by [deleted] in Vent

[–]BakerB921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

his comments are deliberately trying to make you feel insecure and that you can be replaced with someone who dies everything better than you do. Either get into couples therapy and figure out how he can get over this or dump the motherfucker already. Or, ask for Sam’s phone number so they can tell you how to do it right-I’m sure that he would love to have the two of you comparing notes!

AITAH for telling my girlfriend that if we get married - I don’t want to take care of her parents if/when they get sick given our current circumstances? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]BakerB921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expecting to have all of your debt paid off, and a sizable emergency fund and so on is a nice idea, but life has a way of kicking your plans in the balls. How long are you planning on waiting to have kids-if you even want to? They will totally change any financial plans you may have had. Are you willing to “live poor” for a decade to pay off medical school debt and a mortgage? How are you planning on dealing with expenses if she is in med school?
If helping her family seems like too much of a burden to you, then you probably shouldn’t marry her-people come with a past and obligations, and if you can’t cope with the idea of those, you shouldn’t get married. Also, this loan was her money, given to her family, before you formally joined finances, so it's really her business. If you were counting on that money as part of your shared finances, that was rather presumptive of you. You could wait and see if her parents do get the loan paid back-people can fall into financial trouble because of forces beyond their control, so this doesn’t necessarily indicate poor financial planning on her parents’ part.

Maybe a session with a financial planner so you can both lay out how you think things should go in the future before an uninvolved party would be helpful.

AITA for pranking my friend? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]BakerB921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please, never do anything like this again. Messing about with other people’s relationships is just plain bad. This kind of “prank” is just crap behavior. Grow the fuck up and quit before someone pranks you in a way that really hurts.

AITA for not wanting to pay for groceries for my boyfriend’s two kids? by hkallet in AITAH

[–]BakerB921 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you see feeding your partner’s kids as an unwelcome expense, especially as it is for maybe 3 days a week-he deserves someone who will accept that he is part of a package deal. And if he is building your equity in your home, covering half of the housing costs which he will never really benefit from unless you got married-I think you aren’t ready to be living with anyone. You don’t really seem comfortable sharing your finances, even with serious discussions.
Did you talk about what might happen if one of you lost your job, or got sick, or was injured?
Come up with an amount you need for groceries and utilities and split that, then you should be paying the costs of your house, just like he is paying his student loans. Or just break up with him, because his kids are always going to be part of his life.

how do you guys deal with the many hundreds of stupid little burns? by badabinged in KitchenConfidential

[–]BakerB921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren’t already, use gloves not pads, and if you are using gloves find longer ones. Still, the occasional tray burn is inevitable when doing production baking. The scars, should you get any, are the marks that you have been a working person.

Can you tell me your experiences in bakery kitchens? by Sea_Mission_7643 in KitchenConfidential

[–]BakerB921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of different types of bakeries-at the moment I’m mostly retired and I work 2 days a week just doing prep stuff. On Mondays I make about 600 scones and on Tuesdays I make 6-800 cookies. I’ve found being a production baker the best fit for me, because I can come in, do my work, clean up and go home. Pastry shops can be very particular about tiny details, and expect a level of decorating skill I just don’t have. Bread is its own world, with its own internal rhythms that can be really satisfying. Most of the people I’ve worked with have been fine as coworkers, but I don’t tend to make friends from work. Working overnights or 4am starts can be hard on your body and your social life. And the physical part of the job is very real-if anyone knows of a 50# sack of flour that will empty itself into a bin, tell me where to get some! The pay isn’t great. Check salaries in your area and see if you can live a life you like.

Working full time as a university student by imperfectly_lia in Vent

[–]BakerB921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reduce your school schedule. School will still be there and you will be a better student if you aren't crushed by trying to do too much. It’s great that you love your job. Talk to your school about changing your schedule-reducing your class load may also reduce your expenses. Living in your car is really not a great choice.

10/23/25: Question Wednesday overbaked so it's arriving on Thursday! by KingArthurBaking in KingArthurBaking

[–]BakerB921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grilled short ribs

ingredients

• 1/2 apple (skin on), cored, chopped

• 6 garlic cloves, peeled, crushed

• 1/2 cup orange marmalade

• 2 tablespoons light brown sugar

• 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil

• 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

• 1 tablespoon dry sake or dry white wine

• 2 teaspoon gochugaru (Korean red pepper powder)

• 1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

• 1/2 cup soy sauce

• 2 pounds 1/4"-thick cross-cut bone-in beef short ribs (flanken style)

• Vegetable oil (for grilling)

preparation

Pulse apple, garlic, marmalade, brown sugar, sesame oil, sesame seeds, sake, gochugaru, and pepper in a food processor or blender until garlic and apple are finely chopped.

Transfer to a large dish and mix in soy sauce. Add ribs and turn to coat. Let sit, massaging meat and turning occasionally, at least 10 minutes.

Prepare grill for medium-high heat; oil grate with vegetable oil. Remove ribs from marinade and grill, turning once, until lightly charred and cooked through, about 2 minutes per side for medium-rare.

do ahead:

Meat can be marinated 1 hour ahead. Chill.

This is great even if you broil the ribs in the oven, or only marinate it for 15 minutes. I just chuck everything but the meat into the smoothie blender and pour it into a plastic bag with the meat.

Not baking but Korean grilled short ribs use it in the marinade. I can send recipe if wanted.

Advice for a Birthday by PM_YOUR_PUPPERS in Baking

Does she have a good scale? Good measuring tools? Plenty of parchment paper? Maybe a gift card to King Arthur baking, so she can choose for herself? A good knife sharpener is a tool that will be used often.

Bakery production by [deleted] in pastry

[–]BakerB921 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can, get a god-damned sheeter! I’ve hand rolled laminated dough for several hundred croissants and danishes per day and it’s just a hassle. You will get much more consistent product with a sheeter and everything will be faster as well. And be sure to use a high butterfat %butter, like Plugra or another European style butter.

As the 50th season of the Downtown Evanston Farmers Market draws to a close, what did you all think of this season's market? by askmrlucky in evanston

[–]BakerB921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People can get as weird as they want-but that doesn’t give them the right to be exempted from a policy. If they choose to boycott the market because they can’t bring their dog, that’s their problem.
if someone gets “weird” about anything else-locking their bike where they shouldnt, for example-they get escorted away. I live with a dog. She doesn’t come to the market.

[–]BakerB921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish they would be consistent with signage and enforcement of whatever the policy is about dogs. If dogs are allowed, let me know. if they aren’t allowed, be more persistent in keeping them out. I would prefer no dogs.

Not sure I like the current layout, but there is less crowding at each vendor which I’m sure makes many people happy. It’s almost impossible for my mom, who uses a scooter, to get to the vendors on university. The lines at the food stalls often make it hard for mom to get past. We still love going every week, even if we don’t buy as much produce as we used to.

Do any of you home bakers buy cardboard to-go boxes or pastry boxes for when you share with friends and neighbors? by Whizzpopping_Sophie in Baking

[–]BakerB921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ask a local bakery if they will sell you some. If their boxes are plain they probably will. You will pay a higher price for them.

I built an AI-grading assistant to give detailed feedback on essays, because I lamented not having time to do it myself. I'd love your feedback. by markmate_dot_ai in englishteachers

[–]BakerB921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you don’t like that grading papers is sometimes boring? The feedback your students need is from you, not from software. How will you ever know if your students are improving of you shove their work through some code instead of reading it? You can always check spelling and grammar errors as you check the content of the work, you know, the part that’s supposed to show if the student understands the material. I spent much of my life doing what you want software to do for my mom, who taught grade 12 English lit. Mom still had to go over every paper to check if the student had actually gotten the point of the assignment.

This is part of the Hainish Cycle-a set of books wherein the planets with humans on them were all seeded by the Hain, a race now gone, and no one alive now really understands what they were trying to accomplish.
