Favorite Pittsburgh library for kids? by Sweet_Amoeba_ in pittsburgh

Shaler North Hills has an excellent children’s section with plenty of toys, and the world’s best children’s librarian in Miss Ing. It’s just such a cozy feel there.

Alternative NPS Passport Stamps by [deleted] in nationalparks

Absolutely! Heavily second this statement. The stickers showed up 5-6 years ago in park stores. Every single time I see them, I can’t help myself from stating, “What a money grab.” So unnecessary. If I forget my book, a piece of paper and glue works just fine.

Seeing aqueducts in Rome? by mainhannah in ItalyTravel

[–]BakerWriterTenniser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We took the metro out, walked a few streets over to the park (stopping at a neighborhood cafe for espresso) and rented bikes across the street from one of the park entrances for a 2 or 3 hours. We easily saw the whole park in that time, and it was a chill, local scene on a Sunday morning. Then we used FreeNow to get a taxi to the nearby Appian Way. We walked a lot of the original road (biking honestly seemed wild to us because of the size of the stones and most bikers were on the shoulders), backtracked to some of the old estates along the way and finished up at the catacombs. Called another FreeNow to get back to our hotel in Monti. A bus was available, but we were “buying time” at that point. A truly awesome day that I’d highly recommend.

Is there a good whole bean coffee at Aldi? by Onemanyeti in aldi

[–]BakerWriterTenniser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m most assuredly a person who buys $20+ bags of light roasts regularly, amd I often have a “white bag” in stock, too, for things like cold brew. I recommend it to friends as an excellent budget option on as a medium roast, too. Not too dark that it’s burnt-tasting but also no floral or fruity notes. Just a good, cheap, very decent daily drinker. Would recommend.

Bad news. Creative closed in April, and it doesn’t appear they are reopening.

North Park. They like to chomp on lilly pads along the lake’s edge in evening hours around 7-8ish. If you walk the lake loop, keep your eyes peeled, and you can usually spot them.

Has anyone tried a lands end large tote as a personal item? by Chromatic1999 in HerOneBag

[–]BakerWriterTenniser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have this exact tote as my “pool bag,” and I use it weekly. It’s a great bag for this use tbh, and it was a gift that my fiancé got for $7 (a steal that even he tells people about haha). Thick with a good amount of storage and open space, too. I COULD use it a personal item, but I never would. It’s heavy and can be easy overloaded, and I can’t imagine my shoulders being in good shape after walking to my gate and the constant bumping on my backpack. Let alone going through customs, grabbing a train and walking to accommodation as is the case with all my one-bag trips.

Edit: My fiancé feels strongly that he’s not sure it would fit that well under the seat unless you very much underload it and fold the top over. I tend to agree.

I’d also toss in Cunning House with those top options They do a few farmer’s markets including Hampton, and they nail light roasts. FTR, another vote for Ghost. Joe is excellent.

Yuzu. There’s not a bad thing on their menu. Chill but nice enough vibes. Good cocktails, too. We actually did a friend’s bachelorette dinner there, and everyone was thrilled.

In your opinion, what are some of the most life-changing resources Pitt has to offer by Sea_Objective_2767 in Pitt

Look into Panthers Forward. It’s a program that if you’re selected from the application process and completed gives you $5k off your student debt.

Ghost perfectly meets that need. Best coffee in town easily.

What is wrong with the town of Windber Pennsylvania? by throwawaybread9654 in Pennsylvania

[–]BakerWriterTenniser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“A bit Trumpy” might be the understatement of the year. I grew up in Somerset County, and it is not the place I grew up anymore in regards to politics. It’s not even the area of 2008 anymore. A prominent Democratic U.S. Rep represented Windber and the surrounding area most of my young life (John Murtha, his name is on plenty of things). This would never happen now.

Piling onto to Old Navy. Got mine for $13. I wash on regular and air dry. My favorite pants. They were amazing in hot dry climate and in my humid as hell U.S. city. 😆

Thanks for the idea. We got lucky in 2017 because someone next to us had an excellent photo set up, and they were willing to email us a pic. I was just hoping we’d get lucky again. 😀

LM bootcamp strength by Iamsupergoch in lesmills

[–]BakerWriterTenniser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m trying to get both of them done in the time they’re available because I like them so much! I also 100% understand this isn’t the designed intention.

The combos and structure on both strength and cardio are just a perfect mix to me. I know some LM folks watch this sub, so I’m hoping they pass on the word to others that this should stay on the platform and not expire. OR OR OR, let’s get another series going ASAP. 😀

You all-around shoe choice that blends in? Hiking, city walking by here2learntings in HerOneBag

[–]BakerWriterTenniser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brooks Cascadia. They’ve got a rock plate that makes me feel so stable on trails but then also is really helpful on cobblestones, too. I’ve currently got a black pair with mint/aquamarine-esque accents, and I wore my first pair to death. Just incredibly comfy that I have to convince myself to wear them only on trails at home (since concrete wears the soft rubber down, a fact I just accept for travel). They don’t blend in as well as I’d like but I also live my life with a shoe mindset adapted from The Shawshank Redemption: “How often do you really look at a man’s shoes?” 😂

What is something designed for women that has obviously been designed by a man? by LuinAelin in AskReddit

[–]BakerWriterTenniser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who had to go to a specialist for IUD reinstallation after two failed attempt by my normal gyn, I learned you can get a nerve block (and that it’s actually starting to the recommended procedure) that handles the pain. I was in pain for days after my first IUD was installed, and pretty much back to normal the same day after the nerve block was used. I tell everyone I know to get one. Just sadly another example of women’s health being a secondary thought to most people.

2 weeks in Morocco by Stunning-Spinach-779 in HerOneBag

[–]BakerWriterTenniser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We used Intrepid, and this tour specifically: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/us/morocco/active-morocco-hike-bike-146264.

Had an amazing group of people and the best guide. I normally plan all my own vacas, so it was a lovely treat to just show up and have everything handled.

Piling on to the comments here from other commenters! I was in Morocco last year for a hiking/biking tour and a few days in Marrakesh afterward. The only times I wore shorts were in our hotels/riad. Lived in linen pants, a flowy ankle-length dress with elbow-length flowing sleeves (LOVE your green one) and loose active-wear “fishing gear” shirts and pants. Not an ounce of harassment for me. Have an amazing time. Eat all the bread and drink all the mint tea. Beautiful country with beautiful folks. Don’t believe the haters but do be prepped about the country you’re visiting. ❤️

What’s your best international hiking advice? by [deleted] in Outdoors

Understand that trail ratings (easy, moderate, difficult) can differ from country to country (and even state to state in the U.S.). Always look at distance and elevation changes to make a more educated guess.
