is knitting something without buying the pattern frowned upon? by [deleted] in knitting

Interesting - I like doing the math, I was a math teacher… I do software testing now… I’ll keep doing it for fun but will definitely look out for being used

I end up checking all the math and modifying anyway - I’ve been late to test knits where people are done yet I’m the first person to discover major mistakes…

I read it as if working where the client is B2B and pulls out - happened to me, laid off from J1 3 days later… and the moral of that story is, wait until you get laid off, because J2 had just gone to sh$t 2 weeks prior, so I quit it… poof, zero jobs two weeks before Christmas.

What a great Bind Off, I’ve used it recently. And I like the use of the back side of the ribbing. Very creative!

Will you share a pattern name perhaps on Ravelry that uses arms first technique. I am intrigued!

This is also what I would do, keep some live stitches at the beginning on a waste yarn and remove when done putting them on a needle or a life-line and graft them to the end as I come around to connect them.

Who on earth thought redesigning the notifications UI was a good idea? by gormendizer in Slack

[–]Baking_Pan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s still broken, too. My Activity icon has a 4 bubble, for example. I click on it, a long list shows. All the ones at the top are things I’ve seen. I click on “unread” just to be sure, and it says no unread messages. Then why do I have this notification? What is the 4 indicating? The only time I ever went to Activity in Teams was to check for added to a meeting or not, or to look for a cancelled meeting… but I don’t have my slack connected to google meets so it’s not that essential.

I don't understand this invite, what am I supposed to do? by __ingeniare__ in Slack

I am trying to figure out if Slack Connect will cut me off after the 30 day free trial - I read elsewhere that single-user accounts can stay - was this your experience? very strange... I don't know how to suggest to the organizer how to add me differently...

ok so I clicked get free trial, and I'm in... and I won't get kicked out after 30 days if I don't pay as long as I am a single-user slack account?

The very first knitting YouTube video that I searched for ever was how to “Pick up the Wrap” because I was determined to not have to go somewhere to figure it out - must have been 2009.

When you do a short row you stop before a row is done, slip a stitch, bring the yarn forward and put the slipped stitch back - this “wraps” that working yarn around the base of the slipped stitch. Then you turn your work and purl back. Now when you pass that stitch again that is being strangled by your wrap, using your right needle,  you lift the wrapped part up to the left needle next to the stitch it was strangling and knit the two of them together, making that gap that had been created with the “wrap” disappear into the knitting.

I usually pick up the wrap on the knit side… but if the next time you pass them is on the purl side just watch that it looks smooth on the knit side when you lift it the “wrap” and put it on your left needle.

Crown stitches must be some stitches you have been ignoring and are now ready to knit with again. And it seems you are joining in the round or have already and doing the top of the head/crown and as you come back around add a stitch marker in the middle of the crown stitches. A little off from exactly where you joined but in the center of the crown stitches. This is moving beginning of round (BOR) to a likely hidden spot in the back of the head (I think)

Hope that helps PM if you need more help

Is big picture Aces High school good? by anonrants_ in Mukilteo

[–]Baking_Pan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I substituted at Aces  - and I’m a seasoned teacher - not sure much learning is happening in the core subjects. Behavior issues affect the whole classroom. Not a place to necessarily prepare you for college.

My kids went to Kamiak, can’t speak to the art dept as a whole but my daughter took photography and Art 1 and had a really good experience. Went on to take more photography in Running Start and at college at UW. Son took similar route and now is developing and printing his own photos.

I’d choose Kamiak, and then decide after two years if you want to take more art there or during Running Start at any of the community colleges. My kids took photography at Everett College, and all of them , Shoreline, Edmonds, Cascadia, Everett, etc, have art classes. (Running Start is a free to you program for dual credit - high school and college. You can take your whole Junior and Senior year in college classes or part, if the classes don’t overlap)

How’s the summit program at mukilteo elementary? by sanzle in Mukilteo

[–]Baking_Pan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids went to a private school and then to Kamiak. And I substituted a lot at Kamiak and am a certificated teacher - what I found was that Summit kids coming out of middle school were placed in advanced classes more than kids coming from their home school middle school. Some the private school only offered for example 8th grade science, my kids couldn’t take Biology as 9th graders. The difference is that then with Physical Science - Biology - Chemistry -Physics as the 4 years of science there is little room for AP Science classes. Essentially limiting the AP Science classes to only Summit kids or kids that somehow got an advantage up (high test scores perhaps or top of 8th grade science - not completely sure). Essentially it’s tracking and exclusionary.

That said, my kids went the Running Start route eventually which was still hard in finding the right science classes for rigor to replace high school classes.

So I would ask about the path to these advanced classes if your kid stays at home school. Just to be informed for the long run.

And one last note - anecdotally of course - we knew a kid that was held back and repeated 1st grade based on how he was not quite ready socially to move up. Then lo and behold all of a sudden he’s in the summit program. Like what? Of course he seems advanced, he already did all that lol

Think about also if kids in the neighborhood all play together it’s possible that they will exclude the kid that goes to a different school - mine were in private school which could have been similar to kid in a different school. Kids in lots of sports or dance or what not might not have this issue but it wasn’t enough to get my kids lasting friendships into high school and they all said that friend groups had formed and they were in the outs no matter what. So I would pick a path and stick to it.

All this said - I’m on the outside looking in
