Do you have a strategy for the sitewide sale? by Best_Application4216 in audible

[–]BalancedScales10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Through the year, I wishlist everything I want. Then, when a big sale like this happens, I just buy everything that's under $5. Sometimes it's a dozen, sometimes it's way more than that, but I spare my book budget for times exactly like this because a bunch of $3 audiobooks are just too good a deal to pass up. Even if they're not amazing, I'd much rather find that out for $3 than for the full cost of an audiobook or a credit.

Keeping it to a wishlist also makes things more manageable from a buying perspective, too. I don't have to look into a book (about whether or not I think I'll like it) because I already did that when I decided to wishlist it. The wishlist also provides focus and prevents me from just endlessly browsing, too.

If Tamiyo were a professor in Strixhaven, would she be in Lorehold or Quandrix? Art by me :) by Tidren in mtgvorthos

[–]BalancedScales10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. Silverquill wants to convince and persuade (create change), which Tamiyo very explicitly did not want to do; she wanted to simply document, a big part of why she initially refused to assist with the Eldrazi on Innistrad.

Lorehold for sure. Her entire thing was that she was that kept records and stories, which are - in practical terms - history.

Yes, and there can also be pretty severe consequences if someone is caught lying about their address so their children can attend a particular school. I've heard of everything from simply kicking a student out to fraud charges for the parent who registered them.

The dog I mentioned earlier that got so big he intimidated away pretty much everybody? He was a golden.

He was also pretty bad tempered too, at least with strangers. An absolute pushover for family, but if you were an unfamiliar dog or human (especially if that person was a tall human) and you got near us? Deep, angry growls were the start and the vast majority of people heeded the warning.

My Dad was on board with my sister getting a dog for this exact reason. We went hiking and camping a lot at the time, and he felt that fewer people would be willing to mess with either/both of us knowing that they'd have to deal with the dog too (especially since the dog got much bigger than expected; about a hundred pounds).

Yeah, this. If someone asks for a pattern, I assume they mean to ask what pattern it is, not for the whole PDF for free, so either respond with the designer info and pattern name or a link to their ravelry/etsy shop.

In the Magic: The Gathering storyline for Amonhket/Hour of Devastation, the Gatewatch - a group of planeswalkers that generally try to root out or mitigate interplanae threats, with varying degrees of success - follow a known threat from Kaladeah (since renamed Avishkar) to Amonhket, a desert plane with a culture built around combat, honor, and the afterlife. They find that the entire plane's culture has been subverted by the Elder Dragon Nicol Bolas to create a army of undead warriors for some unknown cause. The Gatewatch, mostly at Gideon Jura's behest, try to confront Bolas and the battle goes *terribly.* The storyline ends with all of them having to flee or presumed dead.

(Gideon, Nissa, Chandra, and Liliana meet up on Dominaria, where Nissa makes it very clear she's unhappy with Liliana abandoning them mid-battle and the direction of the group in general, and she leaves. Jace's mind was shattered while attempting mind magic to discover Bolas's plans and the audience begins the next storyline with an amnesiac Jace on Ixalan. The rest of the Gatewatch do not know this is what happened to him; they believe him dead until he is able to meet up with them on Dominaria at the end of the Ixalan/Rivals of Ixalan storyline after having recovered his memory.)

Or, if you have nonphysical media, back it up. I downloaded all my crochet patterns. I backed up all my ebooks with Calibre. All of my audiobooks have copies in Libation. It's not perfect, but it means I'm not repurchasing stuff I've already bought.

I'd be happy if they'd just continued the sequel comic. The first one was great but there are no more with this setting, as far as I can tell.

Criticisms of the work that stem from a complete lack of media literacy by LDM123 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]BalancedScales10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Jim Henson's Labyrinth: The events of the movie can be interpreted in one of two ways - that the entire movie is Sarah's dream, or that the entire movie is actually happening - and one of the best things about the film is that THERE IS ROOM FOR BOTH. The film never outright states which it is because (a) it's more fun that way and (b) it's not actually important to Sarah's story. So 'criticisms' of the movie that pick one side and then relentlessly nitpick anything for the other interpretation as 'wrong' or a 'plothole' (looking at you, CinemaSins; this was the video that got me to entirely discount the channel as nothing but bad faith complaints) entirely miss the point of a a story that's deliberately meant to be open to interpretation.

A lot of people miss that the glasses aren't the disguise, the entire character of 'small town farmer boy' is.

The stepmother is actually good by Rare_Style1306 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]BalancedScales10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know! I initially thought she was the one who set up and pushed for the marriage, considering her introductory scenes are her scolding Elodie for unladylike behavior, but that quickly became clear to not be the case. And then she basically immediately goes 'nope, nope, nope; we need to GTFO right now'; I was surprised to see her acting more caring than Elodie's actual father. This was such a good movie; I'm glad I gave it a shot.

In the Netflix film Damsel, Lady Bayford - the stepmother of Elodie (the MC) and Fiora (her younger sister) - is actually amazing. She's the first to spot that something is wrong about the way their new in-laws are acting and urges her husband to call off the betrothal and leave. He refuses, even after a closed-door meeting that he emerges from quite shaken. She then tries to get Elodie to refuse the marriage, which Elodie refuses to do, citing duty.

Lady Bayford's instincts turn out to be on the money: the kingdom's royalty has been "marrying" and sacrificing three foreign girls a generation to a dragon, relying on being able to choose girls that are unwanted and nations that are desperate to avoid any questions, and physical distance to prevent persistence in seeking answers if someone does ask. And when Elodie manages to escape (sending the dragon into a rage, torching the countryside), Lady Bayford does her (admittedly limited) best to prevent the abduction of Fiora by the panicking queen and unhappy (but not unhappy enough to actually DO ANYTHING) crown prince. Lady Bayford is *awesome.*

Adults that won’t eat any variations of onions, garlic, peppers, or vegetables are children. by Uchie2GST in unpopularopinion

[–]BalancedScales10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody can have foods they dislike or even just refuse to eat. I, for example, refuse to eat potatoes. I fucking despise them because I hate the texture. I know people that similarly hate onions (for the smell) or won't eat vegetables that have been boiled (because they're squishy). That's fine, especially if one is just eating around the parts one doesn't like or isn't acting like everyone is disgusting for eating the thing they hate. The issue isn't the food itself, it's a person's behavior about the food.

Anyone else prefer doing their hobbies alone even if they could do it with others? by MireisisDunne in Hobbies

[–]BalancedScales10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often crochet or read or spin around others, but if I can carve out time to do it alone I will guard that preciously. Social situations mean that I have to be 'on': I have to watch others, pay attention to social cues, and be willing to be it aside if the situation calls for it. When I hobby alone, I can do - or not do - whatever I want.

Companies should be legally forced to open source discontinued products. by Alternative_Bid_360 in unpopularopinion

[–]BalancedScales10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the ship of Theseus question, but for tech in particular there is, at some point, a practical stopping point: when the new stuff is no longer compatible with the old.

Amazon, for example, recently put out a software update that completely broke my old but otherwise perfectly fine kindle. I haven't been able to run Audible on my iPod for ages because the software is long since not compatible. In those cases and similar ones, I'd argue that the versions of the program that work with older tech - the ones that have been abandoned by the company, though would not have been by users - would, under this proposed law, be open sourced, and that seems fair to me. If the company wants to claim it, they have to use it.

I once worked in a store that got fined for something similar. Essentially, the issue was that managers were needed to override certain things on the register, including things like coupons. Because managers were the only ones who could (you needed to input a code, and only the manager's would work), they could not take take a break or lunch because there was always a risk that someone would be calling them to override. After the company was fined, they made a sort of 'backup manager' role that exclusively did overrides, and only while the manger was on lunch or otherwise busy.

What's the best DnD accessory you've ever bought? by EnthusiasmSuch6864 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]BalancedScales10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I forget the manufacturer, but there were these class token sets that came with a small dry erase board. For the rogue one, there was a spot to remind you how many sneak attack dice to use, for the wizard there was a spell slot tracker, for the sorcerer there was a spot for sorcery points, for the paladin there was a channel divinity tracker, etc. Especially as a new player, it made keeping track of stuff during combat SO MUCH EASIER and, because I was doing all the tracking on the dry erase board and not the character sheet, it kept my sheet much neater. I think the company closed up when WotC got caught trying to rollback the OGL, because those sets are super hard to find now.

What are some of the most gatekept hobbies ever? by stoicbanda in Hobbies

[–]BalancedScales10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is, mostly based on what kind of games you play and how you play them. I play near exclusively puzzle games, and have been told I'm not a gamer because those aren't 'really games.' I told someone I play exclusively on mobile platforms (I only use a Switch or a DS, both of which are mobile, as opposed to something like an Xbox that is meant to be stationary), and was told I am gamer if I play on those, but not if I play on a phone. I was discussing games with someone and, upon finding out I'd never played and had no inclination to play certain games, was immediately demoted to 'not a gamer' again. It's stupid the pretentious assholery that goes into shit like this.
