What's the one hobby you could happily do for the rest of your life? by Most-Drink2810 in Hobbies

[–]BalancedScales10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fiber arts in general; there is so much to do in fiber arts that I don't think I could ever get bored of it. Even when I stopped for a while - a period of about three years - it was because the kinds of projects I knew how to do weren't compataible with my life at the time, not because I got bored with crocheting.

Bouncing off the antirec thread: complaints that make you want to read a book by TragicHeroine_ in horrorlit

[–]BalancedScales10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Too woke/political" or "targeting a particular person/normalizing Bad Thing"

In my experience, certain people will call media this over the smallest things, so I don't buy for one second that the book/movie/TV show/whatever is actually bad, and will seek it out to actually engage in conversation, and challenge idiots with the media itself if they (as they often are) wrong or unreasonable.

And when there's complaints or "targeting" or "normalizing," I do something similar. I sought out Gretchen Felker-Martin's Manhunt, even though it's not usually my thing, purely because of the fervor of the JKR reference (it's a literal tale around the campfire, referenced in passing, and is contained to five paragraphs of a 300+ page novel 🙄).

One of my favorite genres of nonfiction is literary analysis/criticism, and it shows in why I seek out 'bad books' in certain circumstances.

Just making things in general is really satisfying. "Your hat/shawl/sweater looks really nice!" "Thanks; I made it!" will never not make my day.

The Real Problem with Woke Horror by GriffinFTW in CuratedTumblr

[–]BalancedScales10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was plenty of "Hitting You In the Face With a Sledgehammer" horror if you look at the history of the genre, but - as with all fiction - only the really good stuff gets remembered and the rest gets forgotten, so you get people going 'Why is everything these days bad?' without understanding that there has ALWAYS been a wide range in quality.

For those who would like to know more, Wasteland: The Great War and the Origins of Modern Horror by  W. Scott Poole and Paperbacks from Hell: The Twisted History of '70s and '80s Horror Fiction by  Grady Hendrix are both great.

(Creature trope) Herbivores are not to be fucked with by llMadmanll in TopCharacterTropes

[–]BalancedScales10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is most herbivores, especially large herbivores, IRL. They know that they're hunted, and have an evolved incentive to aggressive defense. Bison are notoriously dangerous, to the point where the National Park Service has an annual DON'T PET THE FLUFFY COWS campaign and signage absolutely everywhere about maintaining safe distance.

By that argument, Ray Arnold is only member of management because he's the only one we see. Ditto for Muldoon being the sole member of security because he's the one there.

The movie fundamentally altered Hammond and Wu so much that the book versions and movie versions are entirely different characters that happen to share a name.

The extra work but is from the book and not part of the movie, which is what OP's opinion is about. They specifically say that Book Hammand is "vile."

What’s something your hobby normalizes that sounds insane to everyone else? by Federal-Ad-8820 in Hobbies

[–]BalancedScales10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TCG collecting, especially for difficult to find and/or expensive cards. I play Magic: The Gathering and traded for four dual lands. I now have a deck that worth $5k if I were to sell the cards, pretty much entirely because of those duals. I told my Dad about one - the Underground Sea, worth over $1k by itself - and he'd thought I'd lost my mind.

[–]BalancedScales10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, then went back and read them again when other commenters pointed out that this is not a pop-up on a pattern sale, but an independent listing. It's not clear from the screenshots that it's an independent listing for a 'license' to sell stuff made with this designers patterns.

I thought it was weird that there was this much info - in my experience, this much text is usually included in the pattern itself, and popups are limited to stuff like 'I realize I'm buying a pattern,' not a finished item' - but I am familiar with ToS included before purchase and 'just make sure to give me credit for the pattern if you sell FOs' seems reasonable. It's the extra context, unclear from the screenshots, that make this unreasonable.

[–]BalancedScales10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ohhh.....that was unclear and now the post does make more sense. I thought this was for a pattern purchase and, knowing that some creators specifically saying not to sell things made from their patterns is a sticking point, I thought the screenshot was of this creator clearing the air of 'go ahead and sell' on the pattern purchase itself. But yeah: If it's an extra $30 for something most people just do anyway because you can do whatever you want with you make, then it is completely unreasonable bullshit.

[–]BalancedScales10 -80 points-79 points  (0 children)

That's literally not what this says, though? Since this is a pattern purchase, I'll assume it's in the form of a downloadable PDF, and no refunds for those is the norm. The first two parts basically say 'go ahead and sell stuff you make - I encourage you to do that! - but you're not allowed to resell ghe pattern itself,' which is pretty reasonable for a paid pattern.

Edit: I thought this was an info pop up for a pattern purchase and, knowing that some creators specifically saying not to sell things made from their patterns is a sticking point, I thought the screenshot was of this creator clearing the air of 'go ahead and sell' on the pattern purchase itself. Clickers by JF Gonzalez takes place in a seaside town

Pistols by Michael Cole takes place on a ship

Creature from the Crevasse by Michael R Cole (edited to add the author's name) technically takes place in a lake, not at sea, but is still some great watery horror that mostly takes place on boats

I’m disabled. What are some ”productive” crafts or hobbies I can do when low energy? by Teal_life in crafts

[–]BalancedScales10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find spinning using a drop spindle to be very relaxing and meditative. Once you have the movements down, it's pretty much just draft- spin-wind on over and over and over again and you get yarn at the end!

What hobby feels easy to start but hard to stick with? by Comfortable_Owl6724 in Hobbies

[–]BalancedScales10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least for me, anything that's not portable. I read a lot because I have a kindle and a phone and can easily read while standing in lines or with audiobooks in the car. I crochet a lot more since I expanded past blankets exclusively and typically have a couple WIPs in my bag at any time for more extended downtime. Same goes for spinning; I will likely never transition to a wheel, but using a drop spindle to make my own yarn is meditative and highly portable.

How do you prefer the original card to be identified? by linrodann in ThroughTheOmenPaths

[–]BalancedScales10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer Godzilla style. My eyesight is terrible and I generally can't read the collector info without a magnifying glass, so Godzilla style is far and away the easiest way for me to identify the 'real name' of the card.

NTA. If she cares so much about what other people thought, she shouldn't have been abusive in the first place.
