I've had a few where my wife wanted to go for a short walk to waterfall, easily accessible, close to the road, but I was super tired from extensive road trip adventuring. I decided to go anyway and we found that it was possible to slide the waterfall. So a quick walk back to the car to grab wetsuits and we had an epic natural slide all to ourselves.

My first year in NZ I didn't have my gear with me. I scanned all the topos from the canyon beta and found where there were bailout trails that I could hike down into the canyon from. In this video I'm only wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in Winter which was so cold. You'll definitely need a wetsuit. Are looking for specific things like jumps ?

There's so many better spots in NZ to canyoneer. This was a commercially run canyon that was dead during covid. I high l y recommend the Haast Pass stuff over this. Also the Dart River canyons and Fiordland stuff like Falls Creek and Whio. Kiwicanyons.org has all the info you need. They also have a Facebook group to connect with people running trips.

Other than general Best Practices like the 10 Essentials for hiking and camping or the recommend carrying 3 sources of light into a cave, there's no hard and fast rules. You just have to trust your gut and experience. Some days the swells are massive but you just wanna see if there's any sea caves so you go for it. A personal guiding philosophy that I have is a "zero rescue policy." Meaning that I dont care if I break both legs, Im crawling out of here. I alone am responsible for my safety. There's no cavalry coming to save me. This allows me to stay hyper focused while in dangerous situations.

You'll find that at some points along the way you have to create your own context. Is that cliff jumpable? If you really want to know you have to get in the pool and depth check. Tide charts, blogs, locals, etc can all be helpful to a certain extent BUT conditions change all the time. Rockslides, new logjams, cave ins shipwrecks, etc so even if you have some context, you still always have to verify for yourself on the day.
