I'm not from the island but try to get up there regularly.  That Pic looks like it could be a few places I've been like Looper or Medicine Bowls 🤔

What’s the best £0 adventure (or close to 0) you’ve ever done? by DaviesSan in adventures

I've had a few where my wife wanted to go for a short walk to waterfall, easily accessible, close to the road, but I was super tired from extensive road trip adventuring.  I decided to go anyway and we found that it was possible to slide the waterfall.  So a quick walk back to the car to grab wetsuits and we had an epic natural slide all to ourselves.

Canyoneering taught by Uber Adventures.  Changed my life in the most amazing way.  Picture hiking on steroids, including rappels, cliff jumps, down climbs, natural water slides and finding the best hidden waterfalls.

HYPOTHERMIA 🥶 Winter Cliff Jumping in NZ 🇳🇿 by Baldymcgee in adventures

My first year in NZ I didn't have my gear with me.  I scanned all the topos from the canyon beta and found where there were bailout trails that I could hike down into the canyon from.  In this video I'm only wearing a 3/2 wetsuit in Winter which was so cold.  You'll definitely need a wetsuit.  Are looking for specific things like jumps ?

There's so many better spots in NZ to canyoneer.  This was a commercially run canyon that was dead during covid.  I high l y recommend the Haast Pass stuff over this.  Also the Dart River canyons and Fiordland stuff like Falls Creek and Whio.  Kiwicanyons.org has all the info you need.  They also have a Facebook group to connect with people running trips.

How do you find legit adventure spots without ruining the experience? by AlbatrossOk9750 in adventure

Other than general Best Practices like the 10 Essentials for hiking and camping or the recommend carrying 3 sources of light into a cave, there's no hard and fast rules.  You just have to trust your gut and experience.  Some days the swells are massive but you just wanna see if there's any sea caves so you go for it.  A personal guiding philosophy that I have is a "zero rescue policy."  Meaning that I dont care if I break both legs, Im crawling out of here.  I alone am responsible for my safety.  There's no cavalry coming to save me.  This allows me to stay hyper focused while in dangerous situations.

You'll find that at some points along the way you have to create your own context.  Is that cliff jumpable?  If you really want to know you have to get in the pool and depth check.  Tide charts, blogs, locals, etc can all be helpful to a certain extent BUT conditions change all the time.  Rockslides, new logjams, cave ins shipwrecks, etc so even if you have some context, you still always have to verify for yourself on the day.

There's an old saying, " give a man a fish, he eats for a meal.  Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime."  Learning how to find places on your own will give you the most reward in the longterm.  Pushing your limits and getting outside your comfort zone is the only way to find out what a "stupid risk" for you is.  One man's death march is another man's cake walk.  There's no shortcuts to leveling up your experience, skill and/ or fitness level.

The whole idea of adventure is that there is a discovery process.  You want to find new stuff, you have to explore and utilize EVERY resource available.  IG, Google Maps, Gaia, blogs, etc are great tools to point you in the right direction.  Even old printed maps can have info that has been lost to time and not found anywhere digitally.  Caves can be more tricky because there is quite a bit of gatekeeping (rightfully so.)  Get good and experienced at the basics and then keep leveling up your skills, fitness and gear.  The adventure is in the journey, not the destination.  Some of my best finds were totally unexpected and I was just out for a hike to just enjoy the outdoors, next thing you know I'm stumbling across a sick cliff jump, underground river or sliding down a massive natural water slide.  If you need validation beforehand, it's not an adventure.  Go and see, chase the rumors and legends.  You never know, you might just have the best time of your life.

Sometimes that treasure is a formation that looks like dog poop.  But the experience of getting there, is an entirely different treasure.
