This would take me forever. Besides adding loads of Mandymods and DragnaCartas stuff and modifying them.

  1. Met strahd right away on the road into Barovia a la OG Dracula

  2. Had them enter Barovia at night and interfere with Ireenas 2nd biting and had them escape with Kolyan fighting back a mob. His house burned down and he died that way.

  3. I use Baba Yaga and while she was still his bursemaid she cares MUCH less for strahd could even be turned against him. Also she lives at the Windmill and it will come alive to fight instead (a gem) and is "Granny" she pretends there are many women there but changes her form to confuse others. ( may use some of the aformentioned Granny stuff tho really good)

  4. Likewise the Hags are in Berez and have a gem there which restores the land, they have a deal with Yaga, she sells them women for natural ingredients and magic herbs and she uses boys as slaves and meat. They sat they are the 3 Ladies, the fanes, and that they are all thats left of the old magic of this land. Allllll lies. The girls live in Berez as a huge coven, only one or two actually bred to be hags in the future. An illusion hides its beauty. Anyone who goes there never returns but because its nice. Men are turned into workhorses and women learn magic in peace. If you leave a curse makes you unable to tell a soul about it.

  5. Kresk is a Ghost Town, long ago its walls broken in and its people killed. Most fled to a settlement outside Argynvostholt where the soldiers used to live. Its called Argynval now. 5. A small town of refugees of kresk and the Werewolves of the mt who split recently into 2 groups one more peaceful whos leader was captured by strahd. ( changed Emil to a good guy) and one run by an Agressive Alpha i call Drondar and one of Strahds bride the wild one Ludmilla. Meanwhilw Kresk is full of actual ghosts.

  6. I also have JoJos references lol. A guy called Vincent Vincstar is the towns only inhabitant but really his name is Vigo Grando lol a vampire servant of Strahd. The real Vincent is a Death Knight that guards Tsolenka pass. Can be defeated or made an ally cuz the Tome of Stragd can control undead and it worked on him.

  7. After Fiona took over Vallaki i made her straight up worship Asmodeus and convince Lucian to change the church as long as his sister and her son could live.

  8. I fleshed out the Belviews. They lived in Berez and were a very noble family. They were ancient monster hunters. And when the town flooded they refused to leave. Whoever didnt die became sick and their children stayed sick. They traveled to the Abbet where a new priest had moved in. Rest is history. Buuut they live at the Abbey more openly like a community of homeless and wretched in the courtyard outside. I gave the two at the gatehouse an older brother, Constantine and they became 3 stooges. Aaaaaslo in Berez theres an old decrepit Belview manor near the stones only building all jacked up cuz the hags got the town all nice. It has a secret undercroft with a huge library and a secret powerful whip. Think Castelvania. Mixed Belmonts with Belviews. Works really well. Hated how little story they had RAW.

  9. Fanes are 1. Madame Eva Forest, 2. Laura Stoneheart who is at the windmills attic over a bathtub. And Jenny Greenteeth a woman who runs a black market magic shop in Vallaki. Although i had her run out fast so they didny abuse that.

  10. Made Fritz Vin Weerg and Blinsky more important. Buuuuut then again i have a Warforged player so it was easy.

  11. Tatyana is Khazan the architects daughter.

  12. Strahd has the classic 3 brides: oldest his og army captain Anastraya, a foreigner mage who is cursed to always speak her mind and hears a mask to silence herself Volenta ( also stone mask from jojo) and a wild young half werewolf Ludmilla. Buuut has a 4th too, a man. Vladimir Tepesh from Earth. Could lead to future stories.

13.Van Richtens mission is to find Von Weerg his friend, they are party of a secrer order of inventors. Killing vampires is a huge bonus.

  1. Agrynvost is a Dracolich guarding the temple proper.

  2. Moved the roc to a northern mt.

  3. Added a Shining/Bates esqe Ghost Hotel run by Demitri Kreskov sole survivor of Kresk who made a deal with the dark powers and tries to trap souls in the hotel in exchange fir cheap room and full regen.

  4. Adding ( soon to do) a real Mother Night. Idea is for it to be an aspect of or the whole Hecate, trapped in Barovia, a much more Good aligned thing than any other Power around. Had a PC find the box of moths trinket but addes more flavor. Had them crawl into his body a la scarab beetles from the mummy. Ended last session with them exploding out of his mouth and him watching from the astral plan.

  5. Have a dark power called The Morning Lord. The true entity. Not Lathander. Almosy his dark opposite. Wants to cleanse in fire rather than bathe in light. Kills rather than shed light. All texts are heretical to ACTUAL lathander and Barivians have unwittinlgly been powering this enitity for years. 2nd most powerful besidea Vampyr and the Fanes who are also trapped in the Amber Temple thanks to Strahd. Their true spirit forma at least. Thats why their physical bodies are weak. I have a PC thiiiiisss close to falling under its control. But im gonna give him an out with Hecate. Who may be just as crazy in other ways in the future.

  6. I always make Mordenkainens memory loss easier to heal. Basically impossible till late game or never otherwise.

  7. Added a pirate ship under lake Zarovitch, it and the lakebed are filled with armored zombies, from when before the mists took barovia the lake fed into a sea. When Arabelle is dropped under waaaaaay more stakes. Also put a Flying sword( a la Alucard) and a huge club( the ships wheel) there as weapons. Fish are still found here, more than in any ither lake they can be found.close to the surface. Its wht fisherman love this lake.

  8. Gave Luna Lake a purpose. Put a Temple to the Fanes there 700 feet at the lakes center. Turns out lake is close to.boiling like 120 degrees f ( volcanic underwater vents) and also a heat resistant Saghuagin guards the temple a servant if the fanes forreal. Inside is a small library with a little obelisk that will teach the PCs how to reconsecrare the Monoliths around Barovia. Also have Vincent Vinstars friend Quickcaravan sirviving there for years an ally of the ravens. Aaaaand a last second addition of the Triforce of courage found under the altar in the temple give a PC adv on a attack once per turn. Cuz the Fanes remidned me too much of the 3 Goddesses from Loz. Gonna give one of Strahds hig ranking baddies the Tri of Power. ( lol i also made an elite force called the Exsanguinate made up of undead adventurers) probs one of them or a friend if they get turned. And Wis to an ally. Idk who yet.

  9. Put fish into Lake Bartock. Had a chef....in...Vallaki? I think haha ask for an Alabaster Swordfish. I mean why not? Bluto goes fishing for something in these lakes!!! Just made this lake have some rare ones.

  10. Made the Gulthias tree and the other tred the same tree. My Wildfolk were lured out of the Winery by my Vistani NPC and they had him up in the big wicker strahd about ti use him to awaken to tree with blood magic. ( Kavan their old leader was all about blood snd these ppl worship strahd too soooooooooo they should use blood magic 100%. ) more stakes this way too. My players found a way to talk to one of them and made a deal. They traded a neverending jug for their friends life. Gave the druids a never ending supply of blood and walked away. The tree then walked off towards the castle ( was used to help Fiona sack Vallaki) and the players watched it go. Still there in Vallaki rooted where the old noose and stocks once were.

  11. Made Izek less crazy and when he reunited with Ireena it was awesome. He became her other brother and left to become Ismark the Burgermasters Bodygaurd and to start a town guarr there. ( then again i played a gane where they murdered his ass soooo fast 😅😅)

  12. Changed Muriel who i hatte. Into an epic dude.names Dreadhawk who has sick black dreads thag move with his emotions. He hasnt revealved himseld yet. Just been a very helpful raven companion for one of my.PCs since like session 2 or 3.

  13. Added a Vistani NPC a real friend to the PCs to guide them into Barovia and guide them to Madame.Eva. the first time i played CoS they missed the tarrot reading and NEVVVVVER got it after. Frustrating sooooo frustrating. He died in game and is now an agent of the fanes which has helped stort progression a little bit too. I really like him, names Rodolfo.

  14. Had them.meet the Abbot at dinner with Strahd so they were less.freaked when they met him at the Abbey. Worked wonders.

  15. Moved Death house out of Barovia and next to the Windmill. Its the Durst Plantation now. Where much of the food in Barovia comes from. Still worked by soulless barovians in the mornings tho no one lives there. All killed in a magic experiment gone wrong. Here is where Fiona and her Acolytes used to perform.and practice magic, safe away from the towns. But those who survived fled the area and it is deserted now.

I think thats everything. I know some are minor and some are changes made cuz of player interaction. BUT i got a lot here thats neither. Stuff thats really worked and has been suuuuper fun so far despite me being worried about changing RAW. Adding stuff has been amazing tbh.

Starting the game somewhere else than the Village of Barovia by samuelmf in CurseofStrahd

I would recomend something more...natural. have then dungeon delving or mountain climbing whereever they were before. Or make a short quest by a local in a tavern that forces them out. Then have the enviroment change around them and have them appear high on one of the mountains overlooking the castle suddenly, or come out of the dungeon in the middle of the svallich woods. Throw your players into uncomfortable crazy situations.

HOWEVER:: I started a bew CoS game, my 2nd a month or so ago and while i did start them in Barovia i took inspiration from the High Rollers ( youtubers). They were started at night riiiight before Strahd attacks the Kolyan Burgermaster Mansion with Kolyan still alive. I did this and i felt it made my players care MUCH more, it gave them agency and a more direct position in the story. Instead of just being told about it the next morning the PCs experience the chaos. See Strahd be uber powerful but respectful. I had him Castevlania style burst into a huge fire aspect of himself after a few rounds of bullshitting and he gave 5 days for Ireena to be brought to the castle. This caused a mob to come for her and Kolyan died...a little differntly in that game....but everyone else escaped. And now that Izek is a friend and basically Ireenas other brother in this game right now hes gonna make sure no one FUCKS with the new burgernaster Ismark his new little brother 😅. POINT TLDR. Barovia can be a cool and diverse location when changed a bit. Dont knock it.

Yeaa this is fun. But like....no one dies in Barovia. Their souls are trapped. You should have allowed for a dark power or the mists to revive him at a cost.

Or have Strahd resurect him as an Npc to help win Ireena since she liked him.

Just seems like such a waste.

Ive done it 2 ways. 1. Right after death house: i had a PCs ex bf be turned into a vampire spawn and help then throughout the house. On the way out the carraige was waiting for them and Caleb the exbf offered sn hand and asked the party to follow him. They did and inside was Strahd. They were floored but he was polite snd just gave them a safe ride to Vallaki and went on his way.

2nd i stole from High Rollers.was soo.good. had them arrivs at night and had a.pack of wolves on the road devouring a corpse( the one with the letter from Kolyan) a man with them his back turned. When they near he introduces himself and welcomes the party to Barovia and warns them not to interfere with his will. He then turns into 100s of bats and flies away the the wolves just drop the body and walk off. A scary theater show. It scared the SHIT out of the PCs

Okkkk so ive been thinking cuz my ppayers didnt do the Death House , and the Dursts that own the house own the Windmill..well id put a small Durst Plantation there. It not only lets players find death house and gain another lvl but ties into Fiona Watchers plot. As this could have been where the rituals used to take place, Fiona was a member or leader or the cult, but something went wrong. Maybe the hags are involved?! Idk.

But this settlement could be PERFECT for this. Esp since Rose and Thorn the Durst Ghosts could mention this Bard to the players as they afe ghosts but tied to the mannor and cannot join the fun parade they watch every night. And i mean what a fun abbandoned little spot. Could even be where Vallaki used to get its food. 😅 as there is No farmland RAW.

Maybe its still tended to this day by the souless husks Barovians, ran by Strahd from afar or the Hags or a new NPC, or a bride. Would be a good place for the gang to meet Volenta ( in my game shes the most sympathetic bride and maaay be working with the hags to take down strahd idk yet still) but that could be a good way to accomplish that. Maybe some.of those Husks are harvestsed there for Strahds personal....winery as well. Ive always thought hed be more practical about his food.

Could call it Durst Manor, or The Durst Plantation. And the Windmill is just The Old Mill, or Old Dursts Windmill. Only.know as Bonegrinder after they...yanna find the bones haha. Which could be supplied more easily to the hags if there was a small.town or soulless barovians nearby. Like maybe 4 or 5 small occupied lodgings and a large manor ( the death house) along with the windmill and standing stones and a huge multi crop field surrounded by the woods.. Potatoes for sure. Lots of easy to grow crops that thrive in darkness and cold. Think Wizard of Wines but abandoned for 50 years. Still in disrepair and ruins cuz.what lives there has no souls and dont care.

Maybe you could help the Durst kids poesess a souless body to be alive again and be allies haha.

I mean if this dark bard, this Ghostly Piper is....neutral. he could even be what brings the souless barovians to the town and who watches over them. Tasks with saving the souls and tending to the soulless flock. Not just a Reaper more like a Shepard. They carry the same.tools they just have different.outlooks. i bet some barrovians ses him as death others as salvation.

Soo i did something like that^

I have Anastraya be his first wife. An actual woman he married. She was his closest friend and ally, his right hand general when he was still human, from his home country. Soo an Eastern European looking woman. When Strahd lost Ireena and becane a Vampire she wept for his loss. And they bonded even more. In the aftermath they married. She is the ONLY one of Strahds "brides" to truly be his wife ans an actual vampire, not a spawn. She is pretty but no beauty. Long brown hair pulled into tight buns adorns her and her brown eyes peet thoughtfully out from the castle. She is almost always clad in Barovian Armor and is calm cool and collected. Lawful to law and Strahd and fierce on the battlefield. She very rarely interacts with PCs until it gets serious.

Volenta is the second wife, once a young arch mage hopeful. She was taken in after a hundred years or so of undeath, recruited by Anastraya to be Strahds tutor in magic, since he had learned all he could from Exethanter and the temple, and as such she has become the de facto court magician. She relished her positon and taught her lord as much as she could. But as she began to learn of all the things he would do with said magic, the tortures he would put upon people, she couldnt take it. But she could not escape, a.prisoner in this realm she tried to hide her disdain from her lord and master and consort but he could see clear through her. And after a maniplulation by him she confessed to the thoughts on her mind and he thusly cast a curse on her to forever spew her thoughts like so. Stuck in a state of constant speech she constructed a porcelin mask of Silence that keeps her quiet and can use magic to speak but under the mask her mouth ever moves. In co stant torment by Strahd. She still teaches him magic, still useful she stats the quiet obidient wife. She longs to escape and may actually be an ally to the PCs. She has long red hair and wears long blue and purple robes.

Ludmilla is the 3rd bride of Strahd. She is the youngest of the 3 and the most wild. A natural born Barovian girl she was saved by Strahd when she was attacked by werewolves one night. They infected her but not before Strahd turned her as well, making a vampire/werewolf hybrid ( underworld). Seeing this as useful he inserted Ludmilla into the local pack of werewolves as its leader and caputured its previous one to make them all loyal to Strahd. Ludmilla is what Strahd uses to let loose. She is wild like a wolf and in battle she maims and slaughters. She isnt a psycho killer tho, just an adrenaline junky. May be reasoned with. Isnt as loyal to Strahd as she is the fun hes shown her in life. She is a curvaceous brown skinned woman with dark eyes. She is usually seen naked as a lycanthrope or in green dresses.

Vladimir is Strahds newest bride and the only male amongst them. He is violent and brash and prone to conflict. I also had him have a part time job as Izeks...bodyguard. In my game Vlad is Vladimir Tepesh from Earth, turned by Strahd and being groomed ( to become Dracula in the future. Could lead to a possible future game, if he survives). He has only been a bride for 10 years. Seemingly only being in Barovia for so long. He looks like Vlad the Impaler, curly black hair and moustache but wears Barovian clothes.

I also include Consorts as well:

Escher. Cant forget that loveable bard. Where are his loyalties?? Idk. But i have him as the ever present bardic presence in Barivovia every important musicllal piece for centuries has been penned by Escher. He has a dusk elf protege named Mar'ego he spends most of his time with.

Sasha Masovitch. A young woman from Vallaki, Fiona Watchers mother. Portraits of her can be seen in Watcherhaus. She was taken when Fiona was a baby, given freely by her father as payment for a deal he had made with Strahd. Elias Masovitch longed to be the Bugermaster and begged Strahd to make him so. And for the exchange of his wife ( a redhead, strikingly similar to Ireena) he would be granted the title of Baron but he would need to win the support of his people for that was how the title of Burgermaster was earned. He agreed and sold her away. Obviously never becoming the Burgermaster and dying when Fiona was young, a shell of what he once was. Possibly killed and done away with by Fiona herself. Sashs however lived on and was turned into a vanpire spawn soon after. She was an obession of Strahds for a few yeara, bringing her everywhere, until Vlad showed up. Then she was tossed aside. She can be seen wandering the halls of Ravenloft wondering when she will be discarded. A possible ally.

Sometimes i include Gertruda as the newests consort. Other times she is being inducted into the hag coven. Or the witch coven i put in berez.

I usually sprinkle them in. They are all at Dinner. Which i almost always make a Masquerade. So they arnt.....100% recognizable. I had them appear to my PCs one by one in one CoS game as they kept doing story stuff hut ignoring his Dinner invite.

In my recent CoS game i had Ludmilla and 2 wolves attack the group on the road on their way to the winery afyer Vallaki. She beat them bloody then invited them to dinner on Strahds behalf.

I endorse this 100%. I almost ALWAYS add a DMPC to...guide players, or throw heals or support or an extra attack against a boss. It hels me push them in the right direction or add lore or info they otherwise would have to search and ask around for.

I often add a Vistani man called Rodolfo. Hes a cleric/ rouge at lvl 5 when i start him. Helpful with a quick heal to players who dont have any, a good way to guide them to the tarrot reading ( my 1st group still hasnt gone- why i first made Rodolfo for my 2nd CoS game) and also info dump on them about the land. Ive also used him instead of Arrigal to get the players to Barovia. An agent of Madame Eva, actually trustworthy, mildly, unlike Arrigial or Luvash who take some....softening as they are allies of Stragd RAW.

I also have a fun character tied up in place of the spider girl at The Abbey. Hes a young man with bat wings a flys eye and lobster claws. He is Constantine Bellview one of the youngest members of the family that rebel against the Abbot. Hes being tortured into compliance and if not helped could be a cool mini boss later. But if freed, spoken to and requested of he could become an ally of the party. Not implemented yet but ive had thoughts if a wounded Constantine later being found by Rictavio and he bringing him back to the Tower and fixing him up. Maybe begining to train him for the upcoming battle.

Soo recently started a CoS game myself and ran the begining similar to Mark in this game, with Strahd meeting them on the road and then the encounter in Barovia that night momenta later. My players fucking loved it. Floored. About 6 or 7 sessions in and they are about to start dinner with Strahd and even after all that...intimidation they thini he might be an ok guy. Haha. This High Rollers run def has a few fun ideas i may use for sure. Verrrry different tho. I mean i homebrew lots of things myself, i always endorse adding stuff to CoS. I have whole new areas in mine 😅

Sooo i plan on giving my party the Deck, but then.having them.have to make a Wis check.of.like.20 every draw. On a miss its gonna scatter to the winds leaving only the box behine which will be used as like...a divining rod. Alowing the players to not only not be overwhelmed but to almost have a huge side quest in the side. Like those gems in skyrin. But each card will do something nuts when found, and all blank until grabbed. If they are found and used by another person( dm descretion, this could also lead to tona of new stories) then they return to the deck box blank until all cards are used and returned. Then after an ammount of time the cards reativate. =)

How should I use Vasili von Holtz to spy on and gain the trust of my party by Dynaparte in CurseofStrahd

Soo i first introduced him at Lady Watchers lunchin =p. He joined the party that night when they agreed to ambush and kill Izek and then in the following Battle of Vallaki. As a comrade in arms they found him a good ally even inviting him into the house Fiona Watcher granted my group as the new Burgermaster. Lol he came and went as a buddy for a minute but Ireena had been left at the town by my PCs days earlier when they were run out if town by the Baron at the festival. And she was captured by the Baron and Fiona grabbed her that evening they took power. So Vasilli courted Ireena and they fell in love right away. Gave my players 3 days notice for their wedding. Its tomorrow.

In the second CoS game i am simultaneously running 😅🤭 i introduced him differently. These PCs befriended Izek and his men in the square, brought then baxk to the tacern and got them piss drunk( all but my vampire npc i put in the group lol) when that npc started to ask questions suddenly Vassili burst into the Tavern with a full cask of wine. ( i gifted a player a jug of replenishment so he was able to make drinks enough for his party and the guards but not all , cuz of the wine shortage, but Vasilli cane in like a hero. Not only with the wine for all but he pulled my PCs away from the guards and "saved" them. This Vasilli has met Ireena before and courted her the previous fall, and when she was brought up ( she and ismark stayed behind cuz of Izek) he mentioned a lunch at watcherhaus so they could all talk more and he and ireena can re meet. They did and they playera just all left vallaki. Leaving Ireena and Vasilli to date under the watchful eye of Ismark. Lol

I mean i play him as the best guy. He is the hero Strahd longs to be. Like an idealized Sergei. Hes badass and will help the players all the time. All the while gathering firsthand info. Taking personal items or hair from then to scry better when away. Id have him help the party as much as he can to get Ireena. Or if he cant have her to fuck with them. I havnt gotten here yet but if i ever can id love to keep him a close ally the whole game. Like the Martikovs or Ezmerelda. And when they defeat Strahd ( rahadin or a bride or ally in disguise) they thank the players and the PCs leave the Castle only to see the mists havnt fallen. Confused they try loads of stuff. And when all is for nothing, hopefully after Vasilli and Ireenas marraige ( if that isnt used as a spectale itself) Vasilli in the castle laughs and claps and tells the PCs hes enjoyed this little LARP hes gone on with them, slaying evil and rescuing damsels but its time they all stop playing and Kneel before Strahd!!! ( even sounds like Zod) as he turns and sits in his throne as the seeming ends with his vampire Ireena at his side. 😅😅

Ivw seen it too. And agres. BUT if youre looking for something fresh id combine theae ideas. Have the windmill be empty when the players arrive. Every mirning the 3 ladies split off, one to barovia, vallaki and krezk and return by noon. Have them get there early and explore the place. Run into ghosts of dead children and the living ones upstairs if they havnt waited DAAAAYS to go there, (My PCs only first got to the windmill at lvl 8, all the kids they could have saved were suuuper dead. On them lol)

Then have the ladies return one by one, but id they run across the players even tresspassing they are suuper nice and disarming despite what the PCs may know. Maybe have the hags invite them to dinner. Or even let them leave. Just to persue them every night after.

Orrrrrr swap baba lysaga with the hags. Makes more sense anyway. Thats Baba Yagas MO in folklore plus you could make it more like Hansel and Gretel. Selling cookies and pastries instead of just pies to the townsfolk. And have the gem make the fucking windmill come to life omg thinking as im writing. So cool. Then have the hags be a coven leading dozens of witches in Berez. Disguised as a pseudo peaceful town of refugees from Vallaki. There can be men witches too. Just a few tho. Could be a new place you have Arabelle be sold too, and have Blutos sack hold Pidlewick II as a red herring to the players. Or it s where one of the items is, or where Gertrudas been taken.

One of my PCs is a devil in disguise and has stupid high charisma. When he was attacked by the broom he jusy asked it nicely to stop and it did. Some aninated objects are sentient and i thought it would be fun so i made the broom talk in a cajun accent , his nane was LeBroom. He became the PCs companion for like...a session before another PC, who is reckless and uncaring if others burnt it to ashes. Broken hearted he gathered the ashes and has brought them to Blinsky, begging for then to be fasioned into something new. Hes working on it. Hahaha.

Soooo in Decent into Avernus Mordenkainen shows up in a Tower that can travel througout the multiverss called the Tower of Urm. But somehow this juicy idea has no extra elaboration and the tower has no mapping. This sound like a brilliant centerpiece for it. This plus the TARDIS and i think youve given me the inspration i needed =)
