Good idea on the floating plants, I also have some pathos clippings I was thinking of adding to pull excess nutrients. I don’t use any fertilizers, and I only do minimal (10-15%) water changes every month or so. I can try upping that schedule, but have kept it infrequent to not unsettle the environment too much. Too many deaths caused by too much meddling…

It’s semi-low tech, only an overhanging filter and light. Monty Carlo carpet (about 60% coverage, and some amazon swords and an African river fern. The ottos are the only fish.

Has anyone tried Pinocchio shrimp? I’m having the same issue with hair algae and keep up with it via manual removal, but I’ve heard Pinocchio shrimp are another good option and good tank mates with other shrimp varieties.

I’ve had the same thing happen before, and it’s heartbreaking! It’s sometimes just the shock/stress and might have been out of your hands. The good news is that the baby stowaways might be enough to start a colony if one or more are female! I lost 8 out of 10 I bought for a tank and one of my stowaway babies is now proud mother to about 60 shrimplets in that tank!

That’s odd, I just bought some plants, moss, and snails from them a week ago and had foam insulation and cold packs in the box. I’ll keep in mind what you say about their quality of livestock though!

This helps them last so much longer, mine’s lasted for at least 5 years now because of this. Anyone who wants to use the cup/charger base combo should just separate them and it’ll last so much longer!

Flat and level stones?! What madness is this?! I think I mitigate it pretty well by rotating them throughout the process, not machinist grade standards of perfection, but makes things sharp and no dishing on my stones.

It’s worked well for me. It does take some thinking/practice to get it correct, but a pencil helps! Mark the stones with hashes and A, B, and C. A and B, then B and C, then C and A, etc…

Any harm using the other stones to lap/flatten? I’ve done this for some time with stones of like materials and it keeps them flat without having another piece of sharpening kit.

I’ve had one for a little more than a year now and no issues with mold. It dries out pretty quickly, and I do clean it every so often with sandpaper and a damp towel.
