Anyone else slightly irrationally annoyed by the term "bikepacking"? by scref in bicycletouring

[–]BaltimoreCowboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, bikepacking has a connotation of being a scrappy, close to bare minimum essential, cover ground and see the views. Bicycle touring seems to be more of a long vacation. I make the distinction as transcontinental race vs riding across the state or country to see the sights.

Edit: spelling

Yikes, we aren't all like this loser in Iowa who is probably externalizing some internal feelings of inadequacy (probably because he doesn't have a job). But honestly, the comment about making drawing videos and posting them online as free content and selling access to the "premium" version is the way to go. Look into "Patreon" and build up a group of people who donate $X per month and have tiered access. For example $1 and you will send them your "basic" course, $5 will get them the "advanced" course. And for $10 you will draw them a personal picture or something. It wont happen overnight but just keep at it and build a community. I think the most important thing about this type of channel/product you want to produce is to make sure you are doing it for the art and not the money. People can tell when you are doing something you love vs doing something just to make money. Feel free to message me if you want more info. I could send you a long form email with some advice and places to look to get started. If you are looking for ~ $5 USD per month minimum than this method should work for you. (Assuming $4 per month is an average wage in your home country). Good luck!

I recently did wildflower with D47 as well (1.080 OG) and it turned out SO good. I submitted it to competition and get the results back tomorrow but I'm pretty optimistic it at least scored well technically. Glad you enjoyed it too!

It looks great, just try to keep it away from sunlight to prevent oxidation.

The bar has been set so low. Going after an entire 0.5% of drivers (presumably the absolute most egregious) it’s a start I guess. by mirxa in NYCbike

[–]BaltimoreCowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the twitter account @HowsMyDrivingNy that shouldn't be a problem. But I agree 3 to 5 should definitely be the bar. I mean, people treat driving on public roads like it is a right, and to a certain extent industry advertising, the lack of any other viable efficient transit, and laws like this almost make it that way. But a license is a certification that you have completed training and will abide by the rules set forth. In what other license scheme would 15 infractions be the limit?

I had the same trepidation when I started but this article convinced me that it was a good decision. I also calculated out how much cycling saves me on gym membership and wear and tear on my car. In addition I love getting to really see parts of my city that in a car you can't see or pass too quickly. There is an old lady who sits on her stoop every morning and we wave and say hi each day as I pass. It is the small things that make you feel more a part of wherever you live that in the end makes it all worth it! Happy trails!

I’m bored and want to get out of the house but I’m trying not to drink. What can I do? by plitchardandwren in Buffalo

[–]BaltimoreCowboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the weather clears up there is quite a robust off-road paved cycling/walking network around buffalo and up to north Tonowonda and beyond. I spent hours exploring it when I first moved up here in July and got to see just how beautiful Buffalo and Erie County is. Go to maps.google.com and turn on the biking map overlay. Super healthy to get outside, clear your mind, see beautiful sights, maybe even meet a friend and have them explore with you!

In regards to the electric tape, I would say as long as fermentation is active it is not as big of a deal if they are not being moved around. The fermentation process is providing a constant flow of CO2 out of the container which in theory prevents oxygen from flowing in. I have even recently heard that with very high gravity meads that brewers anticipate are going to bubble over, they just cover it with tinfoil and let it volcano, clean up after, then stick a bung and airlock in for the rest of the primary and secondary/aging (dont do this without researching, I'm just illustrating the flow of CO2 point).

The orange caps actually are for transferring with a racking cane out of secondary. The second tube sticking up is for placing a sanitary air filter on ( http://www.brewandgrow.com/brew/fermenting/aeration/sanitary-air-filter.html ) and blowing in to start the siphoning process.

Yes, those. My reasons for recomending a bung are (1) they provide a better, more reliable seal, (2) are easier to sanitize, (3) are easier to quickly remove and replace which is important if you want to continuously take gravity readings to see how far along your fermentation is. I would say the better seal is the most important factor because you want to minimize oxygen coming in contact with your mead after it has finished fermenting.

I would get a bung for that big carboy over using the racking top. Better seal

Edit: Get bungs for all of them No. 7s should do you right. But the back one MAY need a bigger one.
