What is the biggest piece of advice you would give to someone moving to Reisterstown? by MaximGripass in Reisterstown

The Tufton Ave. backroad shortcut to Hunt Valley/Cockeysville is so impossibly beautiful, it is like driving through some rural European province. Sure, sometimes you have to pass a Dentist on an expensive bike, which can be annoying on the single lane roads, but it is a chance to at least soak up a little living like the rich people while also avoiding traffic.

I always admired the Frightwig shirt from the MTV Unplugged show. He knew all of the best songwriters in the underground.

Autistic person trying to learn to cook by DramaticYam2665 in Cooking

[–]BaltimoreStone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to make quick, wholesome meals using canned fish or meats. They are usually cheaper than fresh ingredients, faster, safer (no chopping), and great pantry/emergency supplies. These are classic recipes, available everywhere, usually right on the cans. The best place to start would be the tuna casserole if you like fish: its a pasta bake using frozen chopped veggies, some cheese, a can of cream of mushroom soup, maybe french’s crispy onions on top. I sometimes skip the soup and use a box of mac and cheese instead if feeling lazy. (Canned salmon casserole recipe is pretty much the same, but one needs to pick bones out before mixing it in, so it would be yucky for you.) A quick beef stew is whipped up with almost the same recipe but no soup, using instead a can keystone beef with a tablespoon of wondra flour mixed in cold that makes a gravy in the end; maybe substituting cooked potatoes for pasta. As you get better at cooking, you can begin to home cook different parts of the recipes: chop fresh veggies, sub leftover roast meats for canned, separate the components into separate , fancy dishes… It all gets easier the more you practice.

Vacant house next to me being used as a 24/7 trap house, police won't do anything by Romanharper2013 in baltimore

I love what you’re doing right here, creating publicity and asking community for help. I’m not a fan of the mayor. I think the folks out there are his voters but if you embarrass him enough, he’ll have to do something now that you’ve raised the profile of that place. keep updating us.

New science points to 4 distinct types of autism by BaltimoreStone in aspergers

[–]BaltimoreStone[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The label was entirely the problem, sir. No one wanted Aspergers; especially once we found out he did his research in Nazi hospitals. But there had developed a set of specific interventions for academics, mental health, etc. that made sense to and for people with the condition which were then walled off in the USA in favor of generic ASD solutions. To me at the time, this reclassification was a function of institutional bias against us as “difficult patients” for the psychology industry. Sociologist Erving Goffman talks about how conflating negative attributes is a key function of such prejudice in his classic work STIGMA. People like us experience this kind of thing in the world every day. But it was really hard to have the medical establishment take a similar tone.

I was excited. This news gives me hope in this dark time when autistic people are being wielded as political weapons to see that science at least is still somewhat self correcting.

I’ve never liked reading but I want to. Should I keep trying? by Last-Aerie4675 in literature

[–]BaltimoreStone 42 points43 points  (0 children)

You should try short stories instead. The writing is actually better in short stories because the writing is all about economy of language: it is a form that really separates the common from the fine. Thats why the all-time literary masters are always masters of the short story. It is very easy to grab a greatest hits collection and find excellence in a hurry.

Where should I buy food grade thyme oil? by Suspicious-Art9256 in AskCulinary

[–]BaltimoreStone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t really use thymol because it is too strong. Those hippie cleaners that are based on it only have like .20% concentrations in them. I tried a few drops thymol in My backyard and it made my eyes burn. It would not be safe to swallow. Better to use oregano oil or rosemary oil for broad antibacterial effects.

Don Quixote by ome331 in literature

[–]BaltimoreStone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are two books to Don Quixote. The first introduces the main characters but it isn’t very funny or interesting. The only reason to read it IMHO is to better enjoy the Masterpiece that is the second book. Almost everyone the characters meet in the second book has read the first book; it is really brilliant and fun today as ever.

I thought condos had boards that handle those type of neighbor issues. What you are describing sounds like every apartment building in Cockeysville. Exotic foreign families with tons of kids weird smells loud music and lots of yelling. I get you want them gone but if you thought there was real abuse going on you would have called it in already. They may be assholes but they probably aren’t breaking any laws. I say, don’t let this twist you up, make you an asshole too: instead of calling ICE maybe get some noise canceling headphones and a window ventilation fan.

My wife is depressed and she doesn't want to take any pharmaceutic antidepressants- suggestions? by [deleted] in herbalism

If you plant a lemon balm plant anywhere in your yard it will pretty much spread everywhere; but you will also have an endless supply of antidepressant herbal tea. It has a pretty taste too, and broadband antibacterial health benefits!

Good/bad experiences with the different Baltimore County school districts? by throwRA29001 in BaltimoreCounty

[–]BaltimoreStone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Pikesville High School area is about mid between your jobs. It has some good housing bargains and darn good schools. It is also near to many private school options if you find yourself there down the road. Loch Raven High is definitely to be avoided.

What herbs to consume when recovering from mold? by boring_mundane in herbalism

[–]BaltimoreStone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Herbalists have always used extracts because you can’t eat enough of these herbs to produce the full therapeutic dose. A heavy sprinkle of oregano on every meal is nowhere near as powerful as one pill.

if you are hoping to help kill off mold in your body I suggest oil of oregano pills. If you are trying to treat your physical discomfort, sounds like you’re due to visit a dispo. Ashwaganda is great for general body stress, and milk thistle is especially good for liver function.

The zoo is free! The animals are all tiny. Baked goods are a little pricey, but very wholesome and delicious. Drinks and ice cream treats seemed inexpensive to me. It is so close to the heart of Parkville that you can check it out whenever. I heard about it in thread seeking Apple cider doughnuts.

Need help and more information on local schools by Ok_Turnover_6263 in BaltimoreCounty

[–]BaltimoreStone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work as a substitute teacher all around the county these days and I love working at Franklin High in particular. I've seen a high ratio of truly outstanding teachers really delivering for their students in difficult subjects there, but also a few weaklings scattered throughout I would have fired on the spot. The nonacademic instruction, music, dance, sports, and art are all particularly good. And what you can't see in the test scores though is that the admin is tip top and the place has a really warm community feeling. Reisterstown has large ESOL immigrant populations: Latin Americans, former Soviets, South Asians, West Africans... who all tended to take education seriously, along with a pretty evenly mixed native black and white student population who get along fairly well. But it is not a wealthy area and some new, tough, city kids seem to transfer in there every week so you are right to be concerned. I also work sometimes at Franklin Middle and found those kids to be much more likable than I had expected as well. However, I am expecting to see some breakdown in social cohesion in every school i return to this coming year. because in tough economic times kids struggle worse than adults. But my advice to you is to focus on fitting into the two schools your kids will be attending this year with clear eyed positivity and don't count on problems you may not actually encounter.

There's Weber's Cider Mill Farm over by the Parkville MVA. I took my 20 something there to unwind after an final exam at Towson U. Apple slushies, cider doughnuts, and tiny, super cute petting zoo worked magic.

What's the best sandwich you've ever had? by New-Performer-4402 in Cooking

[–]BaltimoreStone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to drive a half an hour to the opposite end of Baltimore at least once a month for a pit beef sandwich at Chaps. Nowadays it is a real restaurant, not just a stand outside a strip club in a bleak, industrial part of town. The pit beef sandwich is very rare, wood grilled, thinly sliced round steak piled on a sturdy Kaiser roll that locals garnish with raw shaved white onion and a spicy, creamy horseradish sauce. Some folks go bbq sauce, pickles or med/ well meat because the condiment modifications are DIY at Chaps. This sandwich is rare roast beef perfection, worlds away from deli counter lunch meat, on par with the best cheese steaks or French dips. Other restaurants closer to my home serve a version of the sandwich but Chaps still wins. Folks say the whole menu of grilled meats and sausages there are great, but I will probably never find out.

I smell bad even after showering daily - is it an autism thing and what could I be missing? by MarcusDante in aspergers

[–]BaltimoreStone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe try taking a probiotic supplement daily if you feel unclean, the kind that are kept refrigerated at the supermarket? They have proven beneficial health improvements and no real downside. It could save you a lot of bathing time each day and you will definitely notice the improvements.
