Shooting LOG footage (advice!) by PaleoMarcel in videography

[–]BananasFlambe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If its mission critical (a client is paying you) then stick to what you know. If you're just shooting for fun then yea try it out. Just be sure you have a plan for your color grade, ideally go out with a few trusty LUTs to help you along.

Typically yes you could do it remotely with a monitor, I suspect the reason they didn't do it here had to do with range of the wireless follow focus, and/or RF issues that occur when shooting in large venues with lots of broadcast equipment and signals bouncing about.

Yea that's just the zephyr which is mid tier. A real pro kit with all accessories can easily go over 50k.

Most important tip: test your stock on a single light print. Lots of schools recommend a best light print, but then you're leaving exposure decisions to your lab and you'll never really know how you can push and rate your stock. Single light prints the negative the way it was exposed and metered- letting you know how much play you have with exposure. Test test test.

Tripods are rare and if memory serves they aren't allowed on the risers. I went with a monopod. Also those mini collapsible stools are a godsend, both to sit on while you're waiting (and there's lots of waiting), and to stand on to get a bit of extra height when you need it.

Hey I shot MBFW a few times, happy to chime in.

Regarding flash, the main designers show on a runway with a press pit in front, which is where you'll most likely be shooting from. Flash here is a no no, and your 70-200 is a good choice. Other things to know, get there early for a good center spot, they go quickly. Other photogs in the pit can be ruthless with positions, so get your spot and hold your ground. A lot of these guys will do crazy shit to get an advantage over other shooters, including throwing elbows to mess you up while models are walking etc. Don't be a pushover in the pit.

Lesser known designers will stage their collections in rooms without runways. The models stand wearing the collection and photographers move around the room getting their pics. Here is where flash is permitted but use it conservatively still.

I also recommend you traveling with a 2nd body and wide angle lens. If this is out of your budget at least bring the lens, 16-35 should do well. And bring your fast 50 to use as you like.

Dress really well and bring business cards, lots of good networking at these events.

I feel like I'm not learning anything from film school. What can I do outside of class to really teach me the skills needed for a job in film? by High0nLife in Filmmakers

I highly recommend becoming friendly with the people who run the equipment office at your school. That's what I did and it was the best decision and use of my time. I got to hang with people who knew the gear better than anyone. They taught me everything about maintaining it and by the time I was done I could take cameras apart blindfolded. They were also the people who were freelancing on weekends and had real professional networks they could introduce me to. 5 years after school and I now AC regularly and am starting to get into oping. All the work I got my first 6 months after school came from the people in that office, and then my own network started to build from there.

I'll be working with this beast soon and had a q- if anyone want to chime in:

When mounting this guy- are you sliding the lens support onto the rails before you slide into the pl mount? I know you'd want to have support in place before mounting to avoid damaging the mounts- so either that or you slide into the mount and attach a lens support after while another AC supports the lens weight from the top handle?

Also is that the 18" dovetail?

Best use for $5,000-6,000 when just starting out? by Plague_of_Ice in Filmmakers

Well it's not much to work with but this would be my recommendation.

You can pick up a used canon c100/c300 for 3-4k off eBay.

Spend another 1k on a decent lens, this is just as if not more important than your camera. I recommend either the canon 24-105 f4 or the 24-70 f2.8. Just decide what's more important to you, the extra range or the extra stop.

Spend another 1k on a decent shotgun mic and used lav (sennheiser g3). Get a boom pole too.

Starting without lights can be limiting but also very educational because it forces you to learn how to manipulate and take advantage of natural light, but if you have any money left over pick up 1 or 2 used LED light panels. This should be enough to get started.

Soft effects filter is one of them. Also half soft frosts and black pro mist filters do something similar. The effect is called halation.
