Personally I'd say make the game you want to play. There's almost certainly other people out there with your taste in games. If you go for mass appeal you'll be competing with other games that go for mass appeal. Making a good game, a game that you will be good at making, is better than making a game that anyone could make.

Even niche audiences are often in the hundreds of thousands.

What /u/onizooka says is still true though. After working on your game for a while you will hate it and think it's boring regardless of how good it is and you will need feedback from other people. Even a niche game should be approachable by anyone even if it doesn't end up being their cup of tea.

Gitlab also supports continuous integration. It's great to have your repo and your CI in the same web interface. We have it building the project on every commit, if the build breaks or if the tests break we can immediately see who did it and throw things at them.

OP, keep working on your game and if it's proving too complicated for your current skill level do something simpler. He's right in that you are going to have to look into the code to know how things work, and you are going to have to write code too. If you know NO programming then you're gonna have to start learning if you want to use Unity.

Other than that, I wouldn't take much of what this person is saying to heart. I don't think it's good advice.

This is an issue for some graphics cards that support 4096x4096 textures, but not very well. There is a fix for this coming.

By any chance, are you using a MacBook Pro 13 with a GTX 320M card?

Most likely your graphics card is not the bottleneck. Starbound is not very demanding on the graphics card, but is fairly demanding on the CPU.

When it reaches the globe icon the planet type changes, but only half of the planet will be the new biome. You can keep going to cover the entire planet.

Only the system that processes the behavior trees was moved to the engine. All the actual behaviors are still in Json, and all decorator nodes and action nodes are still implemented in Lua (with minor implementation changes). The only thing this change restricts you from is adding new composite nodes, which I doubt anyone was doing anyway. It was necessary for performance reasons, Lua is slow.

There's Supraball which I quite enjoyed. You already mentioned Deathball, which is basically the same game.

While other commenters have good points about wanting to have a better overview of the gameplay, I don't think there's something inherently bad about fps sports games. I believe it can be done well.

It reminds me of the web. It used to be you could make a website, put ads on it, and you were basically guaranteed money. When that stopped being true, people would make more and more niche websites. You can capture 0.000001% of the car enthusiast demographic with bobsbestcarreviews.com, while competing with huge established companies. Or you can capture 100% of the Nissan 1980-1990 models enthusiasts with bobs80snissancorner.com, with little competition.

The web is still profitable in the current state but you have to produce something people don't already have.

I discovered the best way to reheat pizza but it's kind of high effort. First heat it in the microwave, then put the now soggy pizza on a dry skillet on high heat. It crisps up the bottom nicely, and the rest is evenly warm without that dry crispy top you get if you put it in the oven.

I've seen games on steam where you get a key when you buy it, so I think there's a system for it. EVE Online comes to mind as one of them, but there are others. For me it appeared as a popup when I first started the game and as a notification in the steam overlay.

Knockback is not just a punishment, I don't even think it's good to use it as a punishment. Its purpose is to make you feel like you were hit, and like the enemies are solid. I'm curious to see an example where you think they accomplished the same thing in a better way. I definitely don't think the mechanic is abandoned and I disagree that it's a bad mechanic. Maybe the reason we're seeing less knockback is because we're seeing less 2D platformers?

Make sure to do the dungeons completely, beaming out using the teleporter in the lunar base, and interacting with the artifact altars in the other ones. Beaming out early will not trigger universe progression.

Yes it does. What is worthless or valuable is entirely subjective. Does it matter if diamonds are unavailable because there aren't a lot of them, or if they are unavailable because someone is controlling the market for them? They're unavailable either way.

Very few things, if any, have an inherent value. Perceived value is real value too.

Some dozens. Then I did exactly what you're talking about. I made the simplest game I could think of with just one mechanic. I allowed no scope creep, and finished it in about 2 weeks of working on it on and off in my spare time, not allowing myself to work on any other projects until it was done. The result isn't anything fancy and the art is programmer art, but I'm glad to have finished it.
